Cut

The cherry blossom tree.

Ever since Kurama’s Shuichi side could remember, he had spent every spring gazing at the vivid pink-and-white flowers. It was a soothing sight; the petals danced in the cool breezes and wafted their sweet scent around the yard. Whether he had been sitting on the branches as a grinning toddler or just simply gazing at it fondly in his more mature years, the tree had always been left unscathed by people.

Until now.

Kurama stared blankly at the burnt branch on the ground, charred black in some areas and pure ash in others. It was a reasonably small, thin one, but an entire branch nevertheless. It lay forlornly on the grass, half hidden by a flurry of sakura petals. There’s no doubt as to whose handiwork this is.

Shiori was distressed. “Who would do such a thing?” she repeated as she wrung her hands. “Why would they burn part of the tree? Shuichi?”

The redhead didn’t voice his ideas, but there was a certain cold glint in his eyes that prevented his mother from asking.

“Explain.”

Hiei ignored the demand and crossed his arms, leaning against the wall. “No,” he said, a bit more quietly than Kurama’s sentence, but radiating just as much power.

“Why?” Kurama, too, was standing, but this placed him at a far more impressive height than the fire demon’s.

“Hn.”

“Ooh, look, a monosyllabic conversation.” Yusuke walked into the room without knocking, hands in his pockets. “Just apologize already, Hiei. Botan’ll be here with a video in a few minutes.”

“I don’t apologize to anyone.” Hiei spat the third word out with distaste.

The Detective rolled his eyes.

“Care to tell me why you did it, at least?” Kurama asked, bringing the conversation back to its original topic.

Hiei flicked his gaze to meet Kurama and scowled. “The branch dropped a flower on me.”

There was a loud thump as both Yusuke and Kurama fell.

Ah, the anime fall...never get old. I loved this. heart
