I usually buy at either borders or barnes & nobles. Lately these days though I've been going to the library often...also my friends tend to recommend and lend books to me so there's a plus. I mostly spend money on manga -shot- since those are pretty rare to see in my friends' homes but I'll occasionally buy normal books.

I get most of my books from the library but I like used bookstores and thrift stores too. And the internet is always handy if you can't find a book anywhere else.

There's a small, family-owned place in the town surrounding my university that I absolutely adore. There's nothing special about it: it's just a small bookstore where you pay the price listed on the book, no coffee or chairs. But it just has a really nice atmosphere with friendly employees and they give recommendations and will have a conversation with you. /gush XD
When I'm home I go to Barnes and Noble. The closest Borders is WAY overpriced and is slowly becoming a cafe/music/movie store that just happens to sell Twilight and those trashy romance novels.

I don't really go to a library for books, I mostly go to book stores like Page One and Dymocks. I seldom borrow but lend instead.

...birds creep over tin roofs, like criminals with tap shoes... I Hear ThunderInternet, used book stores, regular book stores, flee markets and such. The library here sells books that gets "cleaned" out to from storage and multiple copies when they buy in new ones. I have found my share of good ones there (ancient but good).
I like places that isn't that knowledgeable on what they have, or what its worth. Picked up a bestseller that i have been wanting for a couple of months now, for a fourth of what a regular book store sells it for. And it was in mint condition! Not even opened, i got that crack you can get when you first open a book, and it sent shivers down my spine! <3
But Theres No Rain ...stain the glass with windows, extortionate and cold stare...

I should probably go to the library more often to find books but I love buying books. I'd have to say my favorite place to buy books is Barnes and Noble, mostly because it's the closest to my school.

I love used bookstores. I feel like a used book has its own life to tell me about including the story I'm reading.

I should really go to library more, but a lot of the books I want to read are hard to find in the libraries here. Mainly because I live in Holland and prefer reading English books.
So I tend to end up going to the Donner or the American Book Store to find the books I want.

The local borders is about the size of a small slot at a mall. There's a huge used bookstore that carries both used and new books of almost every subject. An entire wall is dedicated to YA, and the corner before that wall is the children/middle grade section
I don't think they do special orders, but there are two other indie shops in town who try to lure me away with special events and quick delivery of special orders.

I absolutely love Borders, I go there every weekend because I get coupons through email =). Mine is across the street from our mall, and it's full sized and has a great selection. Plus it's a lot cheaper than Barnes and Noble. And I agree with basically everyone else here, their little cafe and comfy chairs give it a real cozy atmosphere. I could spend days in there.
I also love Half Price Books. I don't know if they're only where I live or what, but it's a used bookstore and there are only 3 that I know of in my whole state, and one of them is about 15 minutes from my house. I can't always find what I want there, but their teen section isn't usually packed with people, so I kind of get my own little space while I'm looking at random books. Sometimes, since the kid/baby section is just over one bookshelf, I can hear little kids and their parents reading together, it's really sweet. The whole place just has that kind of homey feeling.
I really shy away from the library. I don't like that there's a time limit, and I feel guilty renewing the books again. But I have a friend whose parents are unemployed and she gets all her books from the library because it's free, so I know there are people that like the library. I'm just not one of those people. I like owning my own books so I can do what I want to them and take my time while reading them.

my school librarian would probably forbid me from ever going back in there if she knew it was me who continuously corrected all the punctuation and spelling errors in the books we have. haha.
as for OWNING books, i live in an area who, when given a survey in order to decide whether or not a barnes and noble would open here, a majority of adults voted that they did not read. yeah, great way to bring hope for our future generations to develope half a brain! thanks, community! luckily, there is one bookstore in my city, and i've known the owner for nine or ten years now. i buy my books from her shop. the nice thing is that when she doesn't own them, she's happy to order them online for you, so it makes it easy on us non-card-carriers.

Having limited space I've been making good use of my university (God bless Worldcat) and local library. However, I have a horrible habit of picking up used books or books being given away. I love used books stores, but there's only one in the next city over. The self-inflicted illiteracy of this town boggles my mind.

Hannibalism We have this nifty little used bookstore in my town, and most of the time they sell their books for $3 to $4 for paperbacks, and anywhere from $5 to $10 for hardback. Though, when the books are ordered new, then they are full price. But for the most part, it's a wonderful place and the books are always in splendid condition. That's one of my favourite places to purchase books. If anybody happens to visit this part of Florida, or does a lot of online purchasing, here's the website. XD
