I was just watching the special features for the DVD...there's a really good bonus thingee on the history behind the original musical. Talked about the development of the project, finding Hart to do the lyrics, Bjornson and the set/costume designs...discovering Michael Crawford...it's very interesting. Even if you're not a fan of the movie, it's great for all of you theater buffs. whee

I've watched it twice now. I love the part where they show you all the behind the scene's work put into the famous candlelight boatride to the Phantom's lair scene. The techie inside me was having a joygasm watching that. And it also made me happy to see fotage of the Masqurade the way it SHOULD be. Colorful! Not flat like in the movie. That is the ONE scene I hate with a passion in the movie.
Oh, and someone... please tell me... WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH CRAWFORD! There must have been 10 other guys on the special feature that sang clips of songs from over the years and Crawford SUCKED compaired to them. I don't see why people worship the ground that man walks on! He's not that good.

He had a new interpretation of the part that I had never seen before. It was great. Christine sucked a**, though. She ruined it for me.

I don't see why people worship the ground that man walks on! He's not that good. I must admit to being a huge Michael Crawford fanatic. I think he's great for The Phantom because his voice has an almost echoey, sad quality to it that I thought suited the character really well. I sympathized with The Phantom when Crawford played him. I didn't really feel that way about the guy in the movie.

But the absolute worst phantom I've ever heard is Gary Mauer, the man who played him during the 2004 US tour. During The Music of the Night, he shouts the line "TOUCH ME!" at the top of his lungs. It makes the phantom seem like a pervert.

I laughed hysterically when they talked about the doves flying into the walls in All I Ask Of You. I could just picture during the performance, in that tender, mushy moment...then SPLAT! xd Okay, Masquerade: what's with the weird dude flapping his arms around at the top of the stairs? Looks like a spasmodic breakdancer. And you're right, the whole strict, black/white/gold thing really kills the scene... I think the whole reason people love Crawford is his charisma...he really isn't that great of a dancer, but he majorly makes up for it with his acting. I guess. *shrug*

You're right, that guy is kinda weird. stare However, I liked the coloration of Masquerade and felt I had to stand up for it. I think they did it that way for a few reasons: 1. To make the Phantom and Christine really stand out against the monotonous colors. 2. A really colorful Masquerade is wonderful onstage, but would be blinding and gaudy in a movie. 3. To show the rich, lavish quality that the Opera had, despite the skeletons in the closet.

I didn't really feel that way about the guy in the movie. Age old "Who's Better" fight. Well, not age old since it started the day the movie came out. I have to agree Crawford is not my definate choice of Phantom material. I simply do not like his voice as much as I like Gerry Butler's in some songs. But for the title song, the Original ORIGINAL Phantom (Steve Harley) is the one I like. It's kinda a shame they didn't keep Steve as an understudy at least. The guy had a good voice. Playing the sympathy card, I seriously do not want to sympathize with anyone. Even the Phantom. I did not want to feel sorry for him. I wanted to feel power coming from him and pure need whether it be pure in intention or not. The true Phantom is not a whiney hiney. So though Crawford makes you go "oh, poor thing" it's not what I think should be there. Just my opinion, though.
