The shining is better. its an original kinda idea and its slightly more believable then the exorsist. some guy with his family secluded in this mansion sized hotel starts to snap from being there so long alone. and goes after his family. All work and no play make jonny a dull boy.

Hmm. Well, neither of the movies scared me. I loved The Exorcist for its effects, and I loved The Shining for... well, the plot. (Demonic possession stories don't entertain me much.)
I guess if I'd have to pick one, it'd be The Shining.

The Shining.
It had such a original plot. And it was scarier. :3

I find it interesting that other T.V. shows have found ways to incorporate "The Shining" into their shows one way or another. (Ex. The Simpsons - "No T.V. and no beer makes Homer something, something." "Go Crazy?" "Don't mind if I do.")

Let's see...The Shining had Jack Nickleson, a wonderful plot, and a very interesting plot where, even afterwards, you wonder if the entire thing could have been a delusion or mental breakdown. Jack Nickleson was crazy beforehand. Why would his seeing a guy who died years ago be anything more than a dellusion? The boy is said crazy guy's son. Maybe his delussions are inhereted? Said wife's scared shitless. Of course she's going to see a man in a bear suit making out with some other guy!
In The Exorcist, you know, without a doubt, there was a girl and she was possessed by the devil. There's the pea soup, the recordings of her speaking English backwards, and she kills people. The Exorcist rellied on effects for some scares, but alot is in the primal fear that someone else is going to dominate what you are doing. Period.
But, despite loving both movies, I'm going for the Exorcist simply because some of the scenes with Reagan, on the second time I saw it, made me laugh.

The Shining. It was just all around better. The two little girls in the hallway and the scene with the old woman in the shower make it a hell of a lot creepier than Linda Blair horking pea soup at a couple of priests.

I loved both movies, so I really can't make a solid decision. But I guess I'll go with The Shining, simply because Jack Nicolson is my favorite actor.

You are asking which is a better film from two different horror genres. The Exorcist, which is supernatural horror, is terrifying due to the fact that this innocent child is possessed by a satanic spirit. While the Shining, a psychological thriller, is about the cabin fever a man faces trapped with his family in a hotel. You can not choose which is the better since they are both from two different horror genres.
