This is a great book that covers the history of the English language. Written by accomplished author Bill Bryson, it delves into topics such as the origins of English (it's actually a Germanic tounge), it's rules (why the devil do we follow Latin grammar?), names, and even the history of swearing (you know, c**t wasn't always a bad word) among other things. In typical Bryson style, the book has a healthy dose of humor, and isn't terribly long. I swear, if I do become and English teacher, I will use this book in class.
