A lot of the lyrics I find online are different from the ones on my CD (the OBC with Mandy Patinkin and Patti LuPone). Example:

CD: "Oh this is quite an embarrassing sight
Someone has made us look fools
Argentine men call the sexual shots
Someone has altered the rules"

Lyrics online: "This is a club I should never have joined
Someone has made us look fools
Argentine men call the sexual shots
Someone has altered the rules"

There are others in "A New Argentina", "Don't Cry for Me Argentina", "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" and others. Why is this?

I never knew Mandy Patinkin was in that

He's frickin awesome

He was Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride, right?

"My name eez Inigo Montoya. Joo keeled my father. Prepare to die."

It might be because most of the lyrics online are for the movie, which Madonna produced and starred in, and I have no doubt that she is not above changing minor things like lyrics and plots.

Not that I'm saying she changed the plot, it might just be something she would do.

Not that I have anything against Madonna, but let's face it, she could probably say that Jesus wasn't crucified and people would believe her.

Oh my gosh you guys, I am so going to hell for that.

Though I strongly doubt that Madonna was the one behind all the changes in the movie version of Evita, the reason for the lyrics being different online and on your CD is that they changed them quite a lot for the movie, and the movie's soundtrack is the most popular one out there. Whether or not they did it to update the show a bit or to make it easier to follow on screen, I don't know.

I could have sworn that I heard the "this is a club I should never have joined" in a version before the movie. Maybe the London Cast vs. the Broadway cast?
At any rate, I doubt that it was Madonna who wanted the lyrics tweaked. Most likely, the lyric tweaking was chosen to be done by Tim Rice himself, wanting to change a few things. After all, the original came out in the 70's, and the movie was the 90's, so in twenty years, you can see things you'd want to say differently, right? That's just speculation, though.

It's not the movie. I found a lyric thing that was basically the lyrics for the whole show from beginning to end, including songs that didn't appear in the movie and THAT had the different lyrics.

And, Freckle, he's got about five CDs, starred in "Sunday in the Park with George" and "Evita", and is apparently a terror to work with.

A lot of times the British cast and Broadway cast recordingse will have different lyrics in some of the songs. I'm not sure why, but it might have something to do with it. It confuses the hell out of me.

When they produce the lyrics and music for personal use, they have to change a couple lines of each song for rights types of reasons. I'm not entirely sure, but I own sheet music of tons and tons of broadway shows, and they're all changed in a few lines because of rights... I went back and rewrote them right hehe, but thats what they do, this may be the problem?
