nicknames can be confusing. most of time they for people with long names, but, like mine, not always.(my aunt liked calling me myuna and now everyone call me myuna)

now for complex explanation of name suffix:
senpai: can be used on own or with last name, it refers to someone older in same association
sama: very polite, you hear sellers, people who are unknown to you(on phone, to letter to unknown person), also very polite for people above you and such
san: you can say neutral, but not exactly. freinds you did not grow up with, or friends that are not very close (which all of you here in japan) use san. people you dont know using san. workmate, san or kun
kun: used mostly for males. used with last name for your friends and people semi-close. for people younger than you who are kind of close first name+ kun. you can also use with females, but relatiopn must be middle
chan: use mainly for women. for younger women only and friend only, otherwise you usually use san. this is also for boys when they are very young, but they cannot like in later life. women will use this for each other even when old.
oneesan/chan,ojochan,obocchan,boya,obasan,ojisan, obachan, ojichan,oniisan/chan: relative name for not relative use in place of you or for people who notknow your name.
