Alright, in GW there are only two couples who officially admit their love. Mind you, the ones who the words of affection are addressed to never hear it. First, let’s look at the admissions of love:
The first is Noin’s “I love him” from Episode 16. This one is meant for Zechs. She tells Relena this and no where else in the series or EW is it ever repeated. So Noin loves Zechs but does he know? Well, he does finally let her stay by his side. But again, she never tells him. Then again, he has a great respect for her and openly admits that she made herself second to make him look good.
The second is Treize’s reference to Une as “his love” in Episode 28. These two seem intent on hiding their feelings but their fairly obvious like when he holds her hand in Episode 11 or when he saves her life by asking Zechs to spare her (this is flashbacked in Episode 28 but it occurred in an earlier episode I can’t remember.) As for Une, she doesn’t even have to say it. She’s jealous when Treize praises Zechs and Noin. She wakes up in time to save him from being blasted (Episode 45) She also asks Relena to kill her after Treize’s death (Episode 49) She takes in his illegitimate daughter knowing he might have loved someone else before her (EW) Actions speak louder than words I guess.
Mind you, there are trends in these couples:
The girl values the relationship more
Zechs tries to avoid Noin over the course of the war. Treize is seen flirting with girls in a scene flashbacked in Episode 27. Then again, Une does some flirting of her own with some ambassadors but I bet it’s only because she’s so intent on impressing Treize by enchanting the colony representatives and manipulating them.
Gundam romance curse
Treize dies and, if it weren’t for EW, Zechs would be assumed dead as well. I guess it’s like the bad luck in romance in UC, X and later SEED.
Ex. MSG- Char/Lalah, Amuro/Lalah, Garma/ Icelina
CCA- Amuro/Chan, Char/Nanai, Gyunei/Quess, Hathaway/Quess, Kayra/Astionage
X- Jamil/Lucille
SEED/Destiny- Kira/Flay, Mu/ Murrue (which is like Zechs/Noin since he comes back from the grave), Athrun/Cagalli (Break-up), Shinn/Stellar, Gilbert/Talia
Both mature ‘villain’ couples
They’re ‘antagonists’ at first and Zechs, Noin and Une are all 19 while Treize is 23 making them more mature than the hugely 15 year old cast.
I guess there are other trends but I’ll leave you to ponder those. By the way, these two relationships are platonic and, if the admissions of love are eliminated, they are about as concrete as 1 + R. This is why I’m kind of annoyed. I think 1 + R is as canon as 6 + 9 and 13 +11. For heaven’s sake, if they weren’t canon, why would they have been allowed to kiss in the Blind Target manga? Anyway, I’m getting off-track, what do you guys think of 6 + 9 and 13 + 11? What other couples do you consider canon?
Also here are scenes from Episode 47 for you to contemplate. In my opinion, Zechs is very much like Heero. He wants to stop caring for Noin and attacks her much in the same way that Heero wants to kill Relena but can’t bring himself to do it and I think this scene shows it. Also, here’s a scene that shows Une crying which may signal that she knew Treize was going to die and decided to cry before he perished so that she could be strong in commanding what was left of OZ. I don’t think the tears are really visible in the image but you could always watch Episode 47 and check it out. So what are your thoughts?
