The First Post

Welcome to the all new quest subforum! This forum is for those who are questing for an animal so that way it'll be easier for people to get their ducks in a row and their characters planned out in advance so flatsale/prompt response won't be such a time-consuming pain in the butt. It's a great way to prepare yourself for any events that may come up, so you can already have your character sheet already finished, or drafted and edited over time until you feel it's right.

When starting your thread, PLEASE use the following format in the subject header! That way, it will make the subforum more organized and easier to sort through:

[Gaia username] - Thread title here.

It's that simple! biggrin So an example would be:
[Ves] - Stars, bars, and... anteaters?

The first post of every quest thread should contain the following information:

Username: Your username on Gaia.
Mule SN's (if any): If you created a mule account, list it here. Mule accounts are optional. :3
TAP Newbie? (Y/N): Is this your first animal from TAP?
Animal choice: What animal are you questing for? Note: You aren't limited to only one animal, like in the book Moreau may merge together multiple animals to form one new animal chimera (such as the hyena-swine in the book). Merged antheria are rare and will mostly be offered in auctions.
CODE for your quest banner(s):

The code for this is as follows:
Username:
Mule SN's (if any):
TAP Newbie? (Y/N):
Animal choice (if any):
CODE for your quest banner(s):
Note: Quest thread format and rules borrowed from the IoDM Quester's Guild with permission. Thank you Kamiki and Chibi Hige! :]

The Official Character Form

Here is the code for the character sheet prompt that is required in all writing events. Please have this somewhere in your quest thread as well, as it will aid you in developing your character and sorting out the details. :3

Tell us about your lab assistant! As this is a pretty key component to the RP, we'd like to know about the human character that is going to care for the animal. Fill out the following form.

Character name: (Pretty self-explanatory, please try to keep the names appropriate to the time period and your character's nationality.)
Character age: (Please keep this realistic, and the characters adults - Moreau would not trust teenagers or kids to take care of his animals at all.)
Nationality: (The country your character hails from.)
Background/History: (As detailed as you want it to be! Tell us the history of your character. Where did they grow up? What is their education like? Do they have any scientific knowledge at all?)
Personality: (What is your character's temperament? How do they interact with other people? How do they interact with the animals? What are their world views, their quirks, their odd little habits? What makes them tick? Answer this in any way you like, tell us about the psyche of your character!)
Short physical description: (A short description of what your character looks like, no more than two paragraphs.)
How did they find out about Moreau and what brought them to interact with him? (Go nuts! Did they read about him in a newspaper some-odd years ago? Did they go to medical school with him? Or did they just wash up on his island or get pulled onto one of the boats bound there? There are many ways to answer this question. :3)

What animal do you want? (Self-explanatory, I hope. If you want, you may include multiple choices so long as you are aware that only one may get picked if you win.)
Why this animal? (Why would Moreau have this animal? Did your character bring it to the island with them, or was it assigned to them by Moreau? Note that this animal doesn't have to be "appropriate" for the character, Moreau is just as likely to give you an "appropriate" animal as he is a completely random one. It could even be as simple as Moreau noticing that the animal catches your eye upon arrival.)

Character name:
Character age:
Nationality:
Background/History:
Personality:
Short physical description:
How did they find out about Moreau and what brought them to interact with him?

What animal do you want?
Why this animal?

Rules

1. One quest thread per person, please! If you are questing for multiple characters, please find a way to cram them all into one thread instead of clogging up the forum with multiple threads.

2. People with "official" quest threads in the guild are eligible for special events! Although there hasn't been anything really planned out yet, people with official quest threads may become eligible for discount coupons, quester-only raffles, and all kinds of other special events we may have planned in the future! It is highly encouraged that you start a quest thread here so you may have access to these events as well!

3. Be open to critique! All characters, prior to arrival on the island, must be approved by the GMs. Their word is law, and if your character is too outlandish, breaks the setting, or is simply not fleshed out enough, they will not be allowed on the island as-is! However, this can easily be prevented by listening to the GMs' advice as they help you along and give you ideas to improve your character and make them acceptable for the island. We're here to help!

4. When it comes to your animal choice, be open to change! We understand that you may want a specific animal, but it's generally a bad idea to get too attached to it to the point where it's an "end all, be all animal" where you want that animal and only that animal. There may be several events where you may not be able to choose the animal for yourself and may be pre-drawn. It's advised that you have a few "backup" animals listed if someone else gets the animal you want first, such as similar animals to the one you wanted (for example: A German shepherd dog or coyote being the backup animals for a wolf). Please keep in mind that questing for an animal does not reserve it -- anyone who wins an animal could always choose that animal. Always be prepared for other options and please don't be sore if someone gets it before you.

5. Please try to avoid characters that Moreau would ICly not want. With the exception of the odd shipwreck, Moreau is very picky about who he brings onto the island and generally puts them through an elaborate screening process via written correspondence months before inviting them to his island. While he'll take in former criminals, university drop-outs, and general failures at life, he is not going to willingly bring anyone extremely dangerous or seriously mentally unstable to the island if he can help it. While some of the island's residents are just a bit off-kilter or have unsavory pasts, we'd rather avoid serial rapists/murderers or the oh-so-crazy schizophrenic bipolar guy with 21 different personalities and a penchant for lighting things on fire. Moreau has his hands full with his home-made groaning mockeries of human life, he doesn't want to tend to mentally ill people or a violent criminal who might snap in a fit of rage and destroy his life's work.

As a final note, please, please, PLEASE try to keep shipwrecked/washed ashore characters to a minimum, shipwrecks are practically freak accidents considering how remote the island is. While it's possible that you were picked up while drifting by one of Moreau's boatmen, be aware that shipwrecks are rare occurences. Where there are some good reasons to have shipwrecked characters, we will try to steer your character's arrival in a direction that will be more believable.

Tips for Building a Solid Character

Please keep this story's setting in mind when developing your character! Your keeper/assisant character is a regular human being from Victorian-era Earth, no ifs, ands, or buts. No elves, vampires, or other fantasy races and your characters may not have magical powers.

idea Generally, characters with a mysterious background are frowned upon. We want to know what makes your character, what caused them to become what they are today, and why they are the way they are. 'Mysterious' backgrounds are more often than not just excuses for people who are too uncreative to piece together a story without explaining why.

idea Historical accuracy is a plus! This story takes place in the Victorian era, so Victorian values and technology are going to be predominant here. I'll admit, we won't be very hard sticklers if your character has one minor anachronism or a character having something they shouldn't (Alphonse probably shouldn't have electricity at his compound nor would he be able to overhaul the brains and body structures of animals if we were to be 100% historically accurate, but where's the fun in that?). This is a science fiction game, so suspension of belief is the norm, not the exception. However, there are times where we might suspend too much belief to the point of it being flagrantly anachronistic, like if your character were to be an openly homosexual prettyboy with long hair that has modern day ideals and beliefs that would most likely get him killed in that time period. While homosexual characters are allowed, please keep in mind the ideals of the Victorian people when designing your character and how he or she may be treated by others on the island (and by their society as well).

idea Characters should be balanced! If they have any great strengths, they should have equally great weaknesses as well to make up for that. Don't make your character perfect, nobody's perfect -- not even Alphonse, as much as he's inclined to disagree. wink Flaws gives your character depth!

Code of Conduct

As a questor, you may not post in any threads in the main guild, excepting the threads marked with the [OOC] tag. Please do not post in the RP threads, journals, or boarding houses unless you have prior staff approval, such as in the case of Cristoval Ramos (note: these approvals are rarely handed out and are usually only given to characters that will help drive the plot along). It should also be noted that all players should read this, as some of the conduct rules apply to everyone, not just the questors.

1. Be nice to each other. This is the most important rule, and so far our only conduct rule! Don't flame someone if they're questing for the same animal as you are. Don't throw a tantrum or flame a GM if your character gets critiqued. Hell, we'd prefer it if you didn't flame at all.

Discipline

Anyone, questor or player alike, who displays poor conduct will have the offending posts either quoted/screencapped to prevent "ninja editing" as proof of the offense if the posts contain flames or other assorted drama, or screencapped and deleted if the posts are inappropriately found in RP threads. The offending user will then be given a strike or a warning depending on the severity of the offense.

Strikes will only be given out after repeated warnings. Three strikes will merit removal from the guild and getting greylisted for a month. If you are removed, you may not join the guild again until a month has passed since your banning. If you are banned three times, and we certainly hope it will NEVER elevate to this level, this will merit complete removal from the guild and the thread. You and all known mules will be blacklisted and put on Sayer of the Law and Alphonse Moreau's ignore list and be prevented from ever posting in the thread or guild again. Please don't make us do this.

The following actions will merit a ban from the guild and being reported, regardless of strikes:

1. Attempts to "hack" or "phish" any accounts of the shop mules, shop staff, or antherios owners. This is pretty much common sense everywhere you go.
2. Breaking the rules repeatedly. I mean being coached about them and then going forward and blatantly breaking said rules again after you were told to knock it off.
3. Harassment. If you're asked to leave someone alone, do it.
4. Abusing other people. If you tell a guild member something along the lines of 'You *@#*!@, I hate you! You suck! I'm going to kick your teeth in!', expect to be removed from the guild pretty damn quick. In fact, if you tell that to anyone, staff, player, or questor alike, be prepared to get sent packing. I don't tolerate bullshit or lame attempts at drama.
