It hurts. It will probably hurt for a while, depending on how serious you two were. It may be a fact of life, but it really does suck.
Truly, though, having been/done both - I'd rather be dumped than dump someone else. If you care about the other person at all, it's so hard to hurt them, even if you know that the relationship isn't what's best for you at the time.
I hope you two can remain friends - and I wish you well with getting over your heartache. sad
