...and since there seems to still be a discussion about who should throw the first punch, here's some valuable insight:

A skilled attacker knows how to keep you from borrowing his strength. And a disengage is enough to leave you open as you try to block what's not there.

Watch the UFC... How often do you see one guy throw a punch, then get gallantly tossed aside by a perfectly timed counterattack? This rarely happens. Just like all those useless jumping spin kicks you learn...

The truth is, punches are too fast and hard to do anything more then block against. Once in a while, a lucky guy will be able to bind his opponents arm after a punch, but usually gets hit with the other hand. The only time a counterattack actually works is if your opponent is trying to tackle you, or does a poorly timed kick.
