Marc nodded. It was a jerky action as he headed towards the stairs. Better to go quickly, than prolong something like this. But he hesitated. Maybe Hadrian would do... something. Something so grand that he wouldn't be able to leave. Something...

Marc closed his eyes. No. Nothing like that would happen. And he wasn't willing to give in so quickly.

So he nodded, again, and hesitated. Again.

"You need to, okay? Take care of yourself." he said quietly. "Just because." he paused.

"Just because we've broken up doesn't mean either of us have to suffer."

The words were a rush, a torrent of nervous energy that left his mouth and had him feel breathless. But it was out, and any excuse was good enough for him.

Beside.s Maybe if he could say that, just once in front of the mage, Marc could get better too.

Hadrian felt sickened by those words.

Neither of them have to suffer? It had to be so obvious, then, how horribly Hadrian had been feeling lately. He wished he was 'suffering' like Marc said -

But he didn't know how to stop it. How could you make your heart stop aching, and stop guilt from seeping into every bit of your mind?

Either of them...did that mean Marc was in as much pain as him?

He hoped not. The other man didn't deserve that - not after he'd already caused him pain, while they were together. Their relationship...he'd been messing it up at every turn. Arguments, not enough time for the other man, cheating...

"No, I don't suppose we do."

But he was. And it's hard to stop it, when the only thing that could was something he didn't think was attainable anymore.

At the words, Marc nodded his head. He hesitated, long enough to smile. But it was a bitter smile, and while he had done it for the mage's benefit- part of him didn't want him to see it either.

"Goodbye, then." he said quietly.

Goodbye.

How stupid. And pathetic. And.

"Goodbye." he repeated, wondering if maybe he should have chosen something else to say in parting. See you around? Later? It all sounded stupid and ironic and too optimistic.

And Marc didn't want to be optimistic.

While another set of words may have been optimistic, 'goodbye' just sounded...final. Too final.

If Marc had said one of those others, Hadrian could have clung to the hope that they truly would see each other. But with the way it was now - it carried the feel that this truly was their final goodbye to each other.

"Goodbye, Marc."

Something was screaming at him to do something - convince Marc to stay, convince him to get back together - to at least do something. To make sure this wasn't the last time he ever saw the man.

But he just stood there.
