When you see a picture that is obviously not good; do you tell them the truth, or do you lie? Even if the artist is young and just starting off, do you tell them that they suck and it's horrible or...do you try to be nice with your critiquing.
I find it hard sometimes to tell a person that their art needs work, especially if they are young and you can tell that they havent been drawing for long. It's hard to be blunt.

Well, I think you always have to be fair, you can start with a compliment on what is good on the drawing and then give advice how to make things better. 3nodding

I'm always honest. People discourage themselves more then anything. I've worked with students that have been treated "fairly" all through their academic careers and think they can do no wrong because no one wanted to "hurt their feelings". The truth is if you are 10 years old you are NOT ready to submit to publishers and be labeled the worlds greatest "Final Fantasy" artist.
I'm nice, but I'm not going to sugar coat things. If it is really bad, then I say so. On Gaia I've noticed that not many people present their works as students, they are presenting as if they are 20-year veterans in the field. Really, read the posts carefully, pick apart every word and take special care to notice the grammar.
If you don't want people to tell you what they really think then don't ask.

if I generally don't liek teh art I won't comment (although sometimes I really like it and am just too lazy to say "awesome job" lol)
otherwise I give constructive criticism and try to suggest thigns that would make it better. Most of the time I like it because everyone else is better than me rofl!
