The world was going about its usual business, with mankind slowly but steadily working itself towards its own extinction. A global climate shift was looming and the nations of the world had just plunged head-first into World War 4 amidst an energy crises and various other troubles. Science was starting to delve more and mroe into genetic and biological experimentation, attempting to create and change life, despite violent protests from various religious groups around the world. Things looked bleak, but then again, they'd been increasingly bleak for the past several decades, and humans in many places were more than accustomed to misery and despair.

And then it hit. A single man decided life wasn't worth living- anyone's life. Deceiving his way into the top ranks of military research and simultaneously into the highest ranks of the world's sprawling black markets, he built the device that would doom a world once and for all. What his commanders thought was a psionic bomb to eradicate resistance in enemy territory was really the ultimate weapon against all life. The Omnibomb.

When it was unveiled, he was applauded and cheered by military personnell and hailed as what they all thought might well be the bringer of world peace through mind control. But then with simple, quiet smile that gave everyone present a glimpse into the near future, he reached to activate the device, and his leaders knew at precisely the last moment they'd been fooled. Before they could even take a breath to speak up, the bomb went off.

And all over the world, innocent civilians sat in their homes, minding their own business, when a blast engulfed everything and a shockwave eradicated nearly every living cell on Earth within moments. Every kind of animal, insect, plant, every species of single-celled organism, even virii, were virtually rendered extinct in a single flash of light. Oddly, the damage to non-living things was considerably less severe, but not non-existant. It was enough to break buildings and dry most of the world's water supplies up, the ruins of human cities were left standing in some places.

There were a very few lucky lifeforms that survived, for as-yet unknown reasons. But there were not enough to continue to grow and multiply where they were, so many cautiously left their safe haven and searched for others. Most would fail and collapse under the heat, and sleep the final sleep. But some might jsut find a strand of hope. The sun would beat down on them through the damaged atmosphere, sapping them of energy, but a few might make it to a new beginning.

And most of them aren't human.

Places

Mortua
This is the closest standing town for many miles in all directions. It is charred and damaged, and virtually empty, but still has a few relatively safe havens. Rumor has it there is a secret underground link in town to an old biological/genetic research facility. The name is not the original name for the town, but it is called thus because the only hint of its past is from a tiny scrap of newspaper that somehow survived, with the word "Mortuary" cut off at the -ry. It's only current resident is somewhat insane man who lives in the crumbling remains of his second-floor apartment above an old shop.

The Crimson Cage
The codename for a ruined, mostly-underground research facility under Mortua, which ironically houses some of the last surviving lifeforms on the continent- escaped experiments. The halls are bloody and filled with debris left behind from the fearsome carnage that ensued when all the creatures were released. Most tried to eat one another or maim their would-be captors and hunters out of defense and fear, but most were instantly wiped out in the frenzy by the doomsday weapon. Only a few survived and are said to still be wandering the tunnels in search of food- or even kinship and understanding. Yes, a number of the creatures were said to be intelligent, though no human knows if this is true.

Runoff Tubes
Leading out from the Crimson Cage is the sewage and plumbing of the entire facility, a cluster of large pipes that now lay dry and dusty in the dull heat of the dying world. They lead out from underground into a large, stone-lined, dried-up water tank, through a ruined water purifying plant, and into a now-dead valley.

The Valley
In total, the valley stretches on for many many miles along the scorched bed of what was once a large, beautiful river. But the point of interest is a small, ruined military outpost that still has an in-tact warehouse. Inside the warehouse may be items of use to any survivors...

The Plateau
Out beyond the valley, and accross a stretch of desert, the plateau sits, the only landmark visible on the horizon. There was once a city sitting at its base, and another, larger airforce base on its top, and would be the ideal place to search for other survivors.

Beyond...
Who knows what will become of this dead world's last survivors? Is there hope for their future, or are they doomed to die off and leave it desolate and quiet forevermore? Only time will tell.
