for those of you who are in Jazz Bands, please talk about them here. you can talk about the songs you guys play, the musicians, your conductor/leader, gigs, and more! i'm sit in for this big band in Buenos Aires, Argentina. everyone in there is an adult and they are all amazing! there's this trumpet player with unlimited range, an alto with lightning-quick fingers, and a drummer who's like 80 but plays like Buddy Ritch. they're all very nice, cool and very good. how about you guys?

well im not in a professional jazz band, but my school has a jazz band and it was pretty cool. the songs we played were awesome, but the best part was when i got the solo in 'just the way you are'. it sounded a lil funky on bari but i liked it better. my teacher wrote us some arrangments too, but the bari parts werent that exciting. i still liked it though, it was great. how about u?

Most of the old members know but i'll post it again ^_^

I'm in a 17 piece bigband that started out as an alumni band for a dance at my old highschool. It comprised of guys old and young and some of the best players to come out of there are in the band. We thought it'd be cool to do more than just that one gig and so we got together once a week to this day. We've had some alright gigs like this bluesclub that we played at once a month for a while till they axed us... We recently played at a local jazzclub that i've played at quite a few times before.

Our book comprises of alot of differnt stuff with a few original compositions thrown in here and there. Some of the members are too busy with work to get a good arrangement out for the band >.< But we have a pretty good book full of quite alot of difffernt types of jazz from various artists.

Here's our myspace page which has a few of the songs we recorded a while back.

Our school band changes every year, as members are chosen through audition. But this year we were a big band (with a french horn). Our trombones were loud, our trumpets were too quiet, our sax section almost always got drowned out, and our drummer had played for one year. But I love em xd . We were still a very good band, according to the awards we've recieved, and our director is not only an amazing teacher, but an incredible drummer, and an ispiration.

One of the professional bands I play in is called Ruff Kutt and is composed of 3 guitarists, 2 vocalists, a pianist, drummer, bassist, percussionist, a tenor (me) and a bari. We play mostly old rock, but they love it when my friend and I put together a sax feature razz

My other band is a work in progress, as we are looking possibly for a trumpet and guitarist, but we are called Showcase 51/3 (yes, five is spelled in 1337), and we'll play pretty much any type of music (we're putting together an arrangement of the immigrant song), but we mainly play jazz.

If you want to hear some of my school band's stuff, just add my msn (I can't upload music onto a site, connection too slow) adam@ostashek.com . I'd love to hear what you guys think

whimpy trumpets and saxes are lame! xd i had to put up with that in some of the bands i was in, but we still did great, just like your band. and the teacher of my old band was a drummer, too! razz i also have a band that's a work in progress: the funk band i was telling you guys about. we have the music, it's just getting people to show up that's the problem! stressed

I'm in my high school's band, and each grade has a different jazz band. Last year my jazz band was the youngest ever to make it to the "Showcase" at the Envision Jazz Festival, (It's up in Canada if you don't know), and the band that's a year older than mine won best junior band at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, Idaho. We have one of the biggest high school music programs in the country with over 300 members, I believe!

congradulations on making it to showcase! most bands i´ve been in have been very young but mature and impressive, musically. that´s a big program, too! sweatdrop

I'm in a little trio called the 3tet. We're from NC. We play mostly standards with a few originals thrown in. We've been playing assorted gigs a few times a month for over a year, and are now gearing up to take it up a notch with a new recording, etc.

Btw hornfreak your big band sounds killer.

I wish i was in a jazz band but i'm a little young (13 yrs old). I had this music camp thing and i chose to go in a jazz band. It was really awsome cos i got solo clarinet. We played cantaloupe island by herbie hancock and something else I dont remember. At the moment the only band available to me is the school orchestra which has about 40 people. When I'm older I definatly want to be in a jazz band. cool cool cool

im in walters state community college jazz band and we have 5 trombones (myself as first a 35 yr old guy and 60 yr old guy on second a 16yr old on third and a 15 yr old on fourth and bass t-bone) we have four screamers in the trumpet section (they can consistantly belt out high gs in my ear) one of them is the director of the jazz band then my ast. band director and his highschool rival and then we have 3 more trumpets other than screamers we have a prodigy on piano and tenor sax 5 saxes all together 2 alto 2 tenor and a bari an exremely good bass player and drummer and guitar player, our rythm section is probably the strongest section then the trumpets then saxes and at the bottomim sorry to say is my section, the trombones(probably why im first part)

ANYWAY we have a concert tuesday the 4th of dec.(mainly maynard stuff)
-a time for love
-jingle bells
-winter wonderland
-macarthur park
-sesame street
-country road
-big swing face
-some other stuff i forgot

we are gonna be opning for arturo and the house band for him

whoa! this is crazy! our jazz/latin/jazz combo concert is on either Jan. 13 or Jan. 14, and our lead alto player can't make it! xp so i will play both first tenor and varying alto parts. not only that, but now i play in jazz combo- which i wasn't in before- because he plays tenor in that! it's nice, but i'm still a bit overwhelmed.
