Stopping or reducing them would depend on what the cause is. Dreams are based on events of our past, present and possible future. It takes events from our daily lives, and uses images and feelings to sort out what it has or will take place. But unlike our conscious mind it can pick up on things we don't normally see, or choose not to.
Bad dreams are usually created by events of high tension, stress and/or emotions. Often to reduce them all it takes is to look at what has been taking place in your life, and either resolving what you can fix, or talking about the stuff you can't.
Sometimes journaling about the events of the day, as well as what we dream can make things a little clearer and help us to understand ourselves a bit more.
You are more than welcome to post your dreams, and you can leave a pm any time. I will respond as soon as I see it.

I had a nightmare problem back in 1968, and as a 12 year old figured out how to control the dream clock. If a dream went sour, I could literally rewind it and make it go in a less nasty direction.
Since then I have used the effect to drive a number of other abilities. I am now a full lucid dreamer and astral projector, and figured out how to operate several other sensory 'powers' such as an aura reader. Note, however, that these things don't work quite the same way the 'classic' versions do... They're home-grown.

I can offer my own experiences... The first concept is to master the dream clock. When you can 'rewind' the dream away from the bad part and alter factors to make the outcome more pleasant, you will have begun aroute similar to my own.
Other aids to lucid and controlled dreaming are to keep a dimmable light and notepad with pencil by the bed so you can record any dreams that pop you out of sleep and possibly sketch the creatures involved, or alternately use a small voice recording device to let you dictate dream events that wake you, before your mind 'ejects' the images as superfluous dream noise. Some people have a companion in the room or bed take notes of the dream memory.

Eating right before you go to bed can also give you weird, and bad dreams. Your body is trying to digest the food at the time, so other functions can go a bit haywire. Also listening to music or falling asleep with the TV on can give you odd and bad dreams because we take in everything we hear and turn it into a part of our dreams.

No actually its more a suggestion of our usual specialties, tea and pepsi's. I'm actually supposed to be cutting down on the latter tho.

if it is because of caffeine, both tea and pepsi have caffeine (as does chocolate), but Pepsi does have more though... heart

Yeah, so sometimes I switch up from pepsi to green, white or red tea. But I'm not that big on chocolate at any time. However dubious the theory I'm not sure whether it works or not since once asleep I try to remain dead to the world until morning.
