The Night . 00

The moon stood amongst the clouded skies, outshining the brightest stars that dared to peak down below from beneath the slew of storm clouds. Almost akin to liquid moonlight it was, pouring its sole brightness from each and every crevice of the gray, near-intangible matter.

It's eery glow spilled upon the darkened hills of a faraway land, daring to illuminate the coldest of shadows in the woods that bordered such unadorned grasslands. Although the shadowed snake-like blades of grass lay without noteable landmarks in their endless hills; they slept not untouched.

Two moon-bathed figures stood kneeling upon the lowest patch of smoothened hill, each body holding the other up... not yet ready to allow their bodies rest.

Every stone, every leaf, and every blade of grass from the last bit of treebark on the far side of the wood to it's brother bark upon a fallen tree clear on the other side of the land stood bathed in the colors of the mother moon and her brother night. Leaving all inhabitants trapped inbetween painted such shadowy hues of unfinished woes and endless grief.

The near twin shapes supporting the other beneath such lights were given no exceptions or chance of reprieve. Although their woes and griefs were painted of a different kind.

Dark skin contrasted sharply against the pale, even moreso thanks to the mother's coldkiss alighting such milk-white skin to near effervescence. Bright blue hair was made dull while blackened seemed to liquify; crimson clung to bits of hair and matted the ragged clothes they wore, it shone with little light but shed so much on so many things.

One wore a pained smile with face covered in more tears than blood while the other carried a grimace closer to sheathed agony.

Sibilant sounds made no echos with the lack of volume, letalone weight to carry itself. The sounds made words, but they were muddled or choaked, from blood, or tears; the other still managed to convey what needed to be said.

Precious few lofted above.

"You need to."

Empty words to all but them, but it did not stop the lands from listening, nor prevent the animals from quieting their young to better understand such sounds they've never heard.

"I can't."

"You will."

"No."

"Yes."

The night lacked compasion as water slowly fell from the sky to land below, the moon lost interest all too soon, for she but turned her head to pillow it against a cloud heavy with the blood of the earth.

"Please... don't."

"There is no other way."

Night skies grew cruel without sister moon to tend to him; it squeezed every cloud until the earth's blood fell from it in thick rivulets, forcing cries of anguish as it did so.

"Don't, I couldn't live- not without you"

A smile so fleeting as the pair sunk slowly to the ground, the coldness of the night and the ice of the rain wrenching such terrible shakes from such young bodies.

"You won't... be without me."

"Not like that"

"It has to be K-"

"Don't speak! D-don't move, let me take care of-"

"-m sor-ry K-ko-ss-ie-el... c-can't"

When blood slowed it's downpour from the broken clouds, more was ripped from them. The clouds were unreal, useless things meant to bleed then disappear, this night was to be no different.

"Please! No, y-you can't do t-this to me! I won't let you, I won't!"

Teeth chattered and bones shook, but it would change nothing of what was to be said, of what was inevitably to be done.

"...I l-love y-you."

"Y'zeil!"

Screams tore through the sounds of rain, lit up the sky with such pain, such hellish intensity...

"Y'zeil!!"

"Y'zeil!"

Where once a pair knelt bracing each other, lay a fallen brethren of the night; what once was two, was now left to be one.

The Day . 01

The sun and moon came and went as the earth rolled, seven days, and eight nights to again become the day once again. The night had lost it's interest in the now sole body that still knelt brokenly upon the ground, near the edge of the woods.

Perhaps it was a sad time, but the elements took no care in such things... for they meant nothing.

He had moved little from the spot where, where he had lost his most prescious person. It wasn't fair- things were never supposed to be as they were now! Why did they have to go and do battle, to lose so much more than either of them had ever thought!?

How he hated Y'zeil then as he stared blankly at the dull grass beneath him.

It wasn't fair!

The pair of them had had nothing to do with the war!

Nothing!

A passing breeze made to caress the dark flesh beneath his armored shell; it was then he took vague notice of his bedraggled state, and then cared little for it at all.

The armored breastplate he wore was useless now, insufficient, and beyond repair. He needed it no more anyhow, it had been useless in battle just like it was now- torn, bloodied, twisted, and burnt.

Useless.

Just like he had been!

Kossiel tore the battered thing from his body, unimpressed at how easily the leather and metal came off of his body in pieces... Until no more but bits of mangled metal and strips of cowhide were left.

What was he to do with himself now without his beloved?

Could he do anything knowing he would never again see his love's smile?

He clutched fistfulls of grass, displeased at how easily the weed gave under his touch.

"What am I supposed to do now you fool?!"

The silence was deafening and he could not stop the sob that he tried to choke back. Kossiel had been unable to stop so many things... what good was he if he were so bloody useless to those that needed him?!

Tears fell onto the backs of his gloved hands and he couldn't help thinking what a waste of salted shame it was.

"I take it back... you're not a fool Y'zeil, just bloody stupid for leaving me when I needed you."

It had been days and still his belly made no noise for food or water; and his once fatal wounds were no more. A poor consolation prize at the cost of his heart... a heart he could scarcely imagine being able to live without.

What could he possibly do now without Y'zeil? Going back to the mess of steel and blood- a war he had never cared for? Was there anything else but for him to do so anyway? He was without family now, Y'zeil had been all he had... so why not go back to the bloodied fields of battle? To fight the humans' wars and maybe die in the process?

Yes, that was all that was left to him... back to war.

Kossiel stood, withdrawing the second blade tied at his waist; unsheathing the blade only to plunge it into the dirt, leaving it's scabbard beside it. He would fight in the humans battles until there was no more wars to be won- and when he had had his fill of blood and death, Kossiel would return.

To do what, he had yet to decide.
