Do you think it's possible to turn a romance book into a movie without sacrificing the original story? I don't watch tv much so I just found out that they made a movie on the book "The Devil Wears Prada" and I thought to myself 'this can't be good'. I'm still debating on if I should see it or not seeing as how I haven't read the book yet.
I know that on the WE channel, when I used to have cable took Harlequin books and made tv movies out of them. I remember seeing one on a story that I actually read and felt like it was a completely different story. But given time, money, people who actually CARE about their product, could it be good?

I think it's easier for a romance to be made into a movie than a novel like Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter purely because a romance isn't usually as detailed as long novels.
LaVyrle Spencer has had 3 of her books made into movies and they work well. They aren't acadamy award winning movies but they are still enjoyable. They capture the essence of the book and it can leave you feeling the same way as if you'd read the book.
I think books are more pleasurable on the whole purely because there is so much more detail than movies.
As for The Devil Wears Prada .. I havne't read the book, it just wasn't the kind of book I'd read but I've seen the movie twice. I really enjoyed it. I really liked Stanley Tucci and Meryl Streep, they both did an awesome job.

I'd rather read the book. In the novel you can get a clear insight to how the characters feel. On the screen sometimes you can barely tell what's going on in their minds. In the novel you can know what the character is suppose to look like. On the screen the actor may fall short of that aspect and not look the way you thought they would be. The novel gives all the details that you would want to know while the movie may omit things from the novel and sometimes even change them. The people who make the movies don't completely care if they keep to the story in the novel If they have to they will change a part without a second glance. So the book is a better option.

i can't really see many of the romance novels i read being turned into films. A TV series yes, or a series of made for TV movies, yes, but actual films....no.
As much as i love romance novels, i dont think they have a global enough appeal to make filming worthwhile. The stories are relatively simple, and the events are rather predictable...it not enough to hold may people's intrest.
Plus, there's the sex. I mean, frankly...you'd lose a lot in a lot of stories if you had to tone down the sex XD.
In general, i respect people that attempt to adapt books to the screen. It's incredibly challenging. I think it's a mistake to go see a movie based on the book, and expect to have the same experience you got from reading the book, because obviously you're not going to. What you have to do is appreciate each media, book or film, for what it can give to a story that's special or unique.

I think it might be possible, given that the right people are working on it, but like Page Boy said, it wouldn't be the same. I think where the few romance books I've heard of that were turned into made-for-TV movies went wrong was that in taking out a lot of the sex, they also almost completely removed the relationships between the characters that made the book what it was.
I really do think there would be a way to preserve most of the dynamic between the characters and a large majority of the romance its self, while making it appropriate for the screen, big or small. It would just really be aimed at a different audience, I think.

The problem with romantic movies is they tend to follow a certain pattern and therefore are very predictable.
However some romance novels have succesfully been turned into movies. The Princess Bride for example. If the director tries to conform the novel to what sells, i.e. mainstream romances you can lose a lot of the meaning. I couldn't imagine The Bronze Horseman being made into a movie. It would turn into either a complete war movie with the romance being only a side story, a porno set during war time or as Corkey Romano said, they would have to take out the majority of sex from it and then it would lose a lot of the relationship developement between the characters.

There is one book I can think of that I could see going from book to movie very well as long as they don't messa round with the dialouge/plot too much. Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie.
There was very little sex so it would be easy to tone it down (it wasn't all that descriptive either, so it wouldn't even need to be toned down a lot) without losing a lot of the relationship that generally developes in a romance novels when the characters get it on (it was at the end, so the relationship had already been developed). I think with the way it was written, it would turn very well into a screen play. There was a lot of visual aspects to the plot that could be fun to play with and the secondary characters were as great as the main couple.
I'd love that as a movie. As long as the right people worked on it. (:

I think nearly any book could be turned into a good movie as long as the right ppl did it. It is just your opinion about who the rigth people are that makes the difference.

I think it was just that it was a lot more visual than most books I read. Usually I don't get really clear pictures in my head, 'casue that's just not how my mind works. But when I read that book I saw everything. It was actually kind of weird. xd

It's possible but the books will be better cause it gives more detail into the romance.

I think for romance, movies are easier to get the full picture because you can SEE the kiss, the clinch, and the emotions.
It takes many paragraphs in a book to describe these things and sometimes they fall flat.
Charlaine Harris has a series of books called the Southern Vampire series and HBO picked it up for a series.
I've got mixed feelings about it though. I love love love the series and think it's wonderful. I'm not certain the TV show can live up to it. But, I do plan to watch it when it comes out.
Sci-Fi took the Dresden File books and turned it into a series and to me, it's not good at all. It changed so many small things from the book that I just felt it lost the original quirkiness.

I think it is very possible! Pride and Prejudice was made into a film and TV series. But by far the movie was way better. It included all the important detail. But apparently the devil wears parada is meant to be very good but it doesn't look like my sorta film. Personally it doesn't look that interesting, I myself am also debating over wether I should watch it or not.
