I've posted before that if I show RD to someone and they don't get it, I know that person won't be around me long. Not getting RD shows a lack of subtlety and word play.
A show like Red Dwarf may seem silly on the surface, but it's actually a kind of intellectual humor. The fact that is seems obvious when it has a depth to it is part of its brilliance.
I've seen a lot of British comedies- in fact, I prefer British comedies to anything else. But not all of them have the quick wit of RD.
Do you like the obvious humor of RD, or the intellectual humor best?

So true! But I've seen a lot of people try to watch it on a surface level, completely missing all the word play and innuendoes.

*nods* One of the best things about RD is that you can watch an episode multiple times and laugh more each time. It's those different layers of comedy that make it what it is. I've only ever showed it to one friend who didn't love it, and she's the least academically motivated person I know. Then again, she doesn't really appreciate British comedy the way most of my friends do, so it may have had something to do with that. She's the kind of person who would just raise an eyebrow at most of it.

And even if you know some of the bits by heart, they're still funny.

Well, it's already been agreed that it wouldn't be RD without either type, lol! I love how, under the obvious humour, there's the slightly subtler more adult-orientated humour as well, because it makes it great for both kids and adults. When I watched it when I was 3-12 years old, I'd laugh at the silliness and obvious humour, but as I've gotten a bit older, suddenly I understand the innuendo and it became even more funny. whee
