Put away the pitchforks and hear me out. This is an excellent essay written by Sarah "Sars" Bunting about the decline in decent grammar and spelling.

Here's a snippet:

Sars

The Apostrophe That Came In From The Cold. Ask yourselves: why is the apostrophe there? "Uh...because it's a plural?" Survey says...EHHHHHHH. "Green bean's"? No. "Welcome shopper's"? Absolutely not! Wrong, wrong, wrong. Ignorant, ignorant, ignorant. An apostrophe is used to shorten ("cannot" becomes "can't") or to employ the possessive ("Sarah's"). It is NOT USED in the plural. EVER. It is used at the FRONT of a decade abbreviation ("'80s"), NOT in the middle ("80's"), because you don't mean that something belongs to the number 80. See? Because "eighties" is a plural. It's NOT a possessive. So don't USE the apostrophe, because you don't NEED it. And when you use an apostrophe to denote a possessive with a name or place that ends in "S," you need to add another "S," unless it's a plural ("the Joneses' house"). "The princess's car." "Cletus's truck." The only names that don't take another "S" at the end: Jesus and Moses. Don't question it. Just learn it. Once more, with feeling: PLURALS do NOT take an APOSTROPHE. Under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. At ALL. No, they sure don't. No, they still don't. No. NO!

xp Argh, more grammar to mess me up. I like to think my skills are above-average enough to let other people think I'm smart about it. stare Shut up, you.

Interesting. But! The title of this thread bugs me.

Shouldn't it be "Sincerely Yours"?

Plus, it's not really relavent since this is the SPELLING Nazi Guild. Not the GRAMMAR Nazi Guild... But I is interesting to know. o.o

*btw I had a major heartattack today... I stole a friend's note and I was APPALLED at all the spelling and grammar mistakes. So appalled that I couldn't help but correct it. When I gave it back... She was... pissed... Utterly...*

:] I don't know why, but the only thing I thought of when I read this was the book "Eats, Shoots, and Leaves." I haven't read it but it's been on the bestsellers list. The joke is that the author found that phrase written under an encyclopedia article for the panda entry or something similar. If anyone knows the exact story, feel free to enlighten me.

I love the article! It sounds just like my Speech teacher. He uses about a million newspaper clippings to show us how to be grammatically correct. He also has articles showing us how people have been grammatically incorrect. And my favorite type of article he shows us are the articles where people complain about the misusage of grammar. It makes me happy.
