first, people around your age:

literal/actual word: 妹 (imouto) younger sister.
use by sibling: 妹(imouto)/妹ちゃん (imoutochan)
what you say for other people's:妹(ちゃん) [imouto(chan)] , for someone above you 妹さん (imoutosan)

you do not call your younger sister "imoto", you call her name. this is only use for saying this is my IMOTO and relate sentence

literal word:弟(otouto) younger brother
use by sibling:弟(otouto)
by other:弟(さん ) [otouto(san)]

literal word:兄(anii) older brother
use by sibling:兄ちゃん(niichan)
use by other:お兄さん/兄さん(oniisan/niisan)

literal word:姉(anee) older sister
use by sibling:姉さん(neesan)
use by other:姉さん/お姉さん(neesan/oneesan)

in japan, there is respect for older sister.
