How many differnt weres are there I mean I've heard of werewolves, wereleopards, wererats, werebears, weretiger, werejaguar, weredog and a few more. Can any animal be a were?

werelion, snakes(like all kinds tho it's not a true type of were) swans (again not a true type) I think most of the bigger predators have weres...

Don't forget the hyenas. wink Personally, I like the rats most.

I guess a were can be any animal, or at least it seems that way. Maybe an animal has to carry lycanthropy then give it to a human before there can be weres of it. You know, like how humans might've gotten HIV from SIV-infected monkeys. Couldn't get it if it weren't for interaction with monkeys. I, uh, think. LKH should start writing essays on her creatures, I swear.

According to LKH, not any animal can be a were. She only draws off of creatures that she has found in existing mythology, and aside from the swans, only predators can be weres.

The way she explained it was that people only developed legends of shapeshifters or lycanthropy if the animal could already kill them and was already a threat.

Thus, no werepenguins... crying

LKH doesn't make any sense. Hyenas are usually afraid of humans*, and rats depending on the species, foxes might prey on human children but nothing bigger... gonk Where's the threat in them?

Oh well. Maybe if it was a carnivorous, predatory penguin? Eh? Eh? surprised

*Actually, that's coyotes. Sorry.

Perhaps it's something to do with social structures? But that wouldn't make sense since leopards are solitary creatures in the wild. I've definitely heard of most of the shifters she's mentioned in other mythologies, but some of them are just.... confused yeah

*shrug* Maybe.

Sometimes I think preternatural writers come up with explanations after they create their creatures. xd

the were-fox (or somthing similar) is prevalent in japanese culture (read kitsune) rats will eat anything that is incapable of defending itself including unconsciance humans.

I personally like the idea of pan-weres.

Pretty much mythology and the animals at the top of the food chain, yep. Pan-weres are pretty interesting, but I've always had a penchant for big cats. x3

I know that. Hell, I'm co-owner of an RP inn called the White Kistune Inn. It just doesn't make any sense to me to choose based on those two things. If lycanthropy is a biological thing, that even has a vaccine, there should be a logical explanation besides "In Japanese mythology there are kistunes". If foxes were chosen because of mythology, lycanthropy shouldn't just be a disease like LKH frames it. If foxes were chosen because of their mythology, why not make them separate creatures, like lamias?

Sorry, but using both realistic and mythological approaches irritates and confuses me. >_< LKH does such a good job of making it seem like weres could really exist, choosing them because of mythology kind of ruins the illusion. *shrug*

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a pan-were? Someone with multiple forms of lycanthropy?
