I just got called in to work up at school for this weekend and while Judy (the technical director) was giving me my schedule, she told me that the fall show we are looking into is called "Quilters." Doc is pricing it now, but they really want to do it, which shocked the hell outta me cus that's listed as a musical, which we only do every other year and this isn't the year for it/we are going a musical senior workshop at the same time.
Anyways, I found some info on it, but I recall people talking about it around here. I'd like to get some first hand opinion on it. Also, I'm looking for the music if it exists cus I can't find it anywhere. Thanks.

I was in it about a year ago. It's a really moving piece and an amazing experience to be a part of. It's based on a book, that's actually pretty short, you can read it in an hour or two, it goes by the same name and it's by Molly Newman and Barbara Damashek (you can probably find it at the library) but it's all a bit more fleshed out in the stage version.
It takes place in like the early to middle 1800's and is about a woman who went through the struggle of raising 5 girls in the American west and common struggles of American women of the time (through the 6 main characters, playing different parts in different scenes and monologues) through quilt blocks, which are going into the main character's greatest work, her memory quilt. The main character, Sarah, explains what it means to have these particular blocks in the quilt and then the scene happens. It's really touching and cute, it's really....womanly. Not the kind of play your younger brother would enjoy.
The way it was performed at my high school, the entire front row was made up of antique chairs and extras would sit in them, and each extra would hold a quilt block significant to the show (I was Country Crossroads ^_^) and maybe hold various props for the main cast members to grab during specific scenes. In between the times, we'd either be singing, watching the scenes, or quilting on our big quilt blocks.
There is some great music in Quilters, and it's one of the best plays in the world for an actress to find a monologue, but I haven't been able to find any recordings of it anywhere. It didn't run very long on Broadway. Some of the best songs, in my opinion are "Cornelia Corn Cob Doll", "Butterfly" and "Dandelion". Good luck finding this stuff. Hope I could help you!

Since you've heard the music, what style of music would be best to use for auditions? Any suggestions? I have mainly just theatre songbooks.

I believe it can also be cut as a straight play. Our school competed against it at the UIL one-act play competition. Our director was also not impressed by it, but she's a really tough cookie.

I dunno what plays we're doing next year
We do 3 plays and a musical each year

Folk songs would be a good audition choice, I think, or anything folk-sounding. Stay away from anything jazzy if you can. Keep it as simple as you possibly can.

I know this is bumping an old post, but I just wanted to tell ya that the castlist went up today. I got into it. I'm officially Margaret in the daughters as well as others. Most of my characters are the more mature ones. I'm the Midwife, the Nurse, June, Miss Jesse, Molly, the Mother in “Log Cabin,” Lillian, and a few fillers like one of the cows, a girl, and a child at one point.
I'm excited! We read the first few blocks tonight (the rest we are reading tomorrow night) and everyone in the show is loving it so far. It’s am amazing script! We were all fighting back tears in block 2.
The stage is going to be really unique. We are doing it 3/4 in the round and have five acting areas, the main area, two up in the audience, and two more on top of the piano bins we have on the stage that store the grand pianos. We have no real set expect for strategically placed hollow tubes that poles with various fabric attached to them. The fire is going to be amazing because we are going to have a red fabric attached to one pole then wound all around the stage around the other poles so it surrounds the main playing area and the actors.
This show is going to be AMAZING!

Sound like you're gonna have a blast with it! I know I did. I was in it in 2000 when UND did it. I was Polly, Molly, and a few others that I don't recall off the top of my head cause I don't feel like digging out my resume. It was a great show. I loved Dandilion and Butterfly too. Beautiful songs. At the end of our show we had this HUGE quilt that was lowered from the fly. I think I heard somewhere that it was the largest quilt ever made. We borrowed it from somewhere. I'm not sure where. It was great though. Wonderful memories. Our fire scene was incredible. I wish I had a video of that show.
