first the basic:

there are 2 adjective type: adjective that get ending with -i and other that end at -na. there no change in meaning in both except they conjugate different

adjective like verb, are change depend on tense, but only if the come at end of sentence.
if you want say: i am pretty, you must change adjective. but since this is very informal you dont have to. but for all other tense you have no choice to change, informal or not.

this informal construction for -i adjective, example adjective are kakkoi:

present(is) kakkoii

present negative(isnt) kakkoyo ku nai

past(was) kakkoyo katta

past negative(wasnt) kakkoyo ku nakatta

so if yo want saying i am not handsome, you are not handsome, that man wasnt handsome, that man is handsome etc. you will use one form from top.

this is polite:

present (is) kakkoii desu

present negative(isnt) kakkyo ku arimasen

past(was)kakkyo katta desu

past negative(wasnt) kakkyoku arimasen deshita

with -na adjective taisetsu na:

informal-

present(is) taisetsu na

present negative(isnt) taisetsu ja nai

past(was) taisetsu datta

past negative(wasnt) taisetsu ja nakatta

this is polite:

present (is) taisetsu desu

present negative(isnt) taisetsu ja arimasen

past(was) taisetsu deshita

past negative(wasnt) taisetsu ja arimasen deshita

you are able see that -na take desu everytime because -i are adjectives with own grammar rules (which is why the have ku), and -na is more relate to noun. you will not see the desu if you do not know how to conjugate desu/da/de gozaimasu(those are informal and polite form of desu)

now, if you want say "my clothes are warm and cute" you do NOT say "atashi no fuku wa atatakai soshite kawaii yo!" that is WRONG!!!!!!!! you must make adjective in there own special -te form (but that does not mean they can be use as command)

for -i adjective you drop -i and put -kute

and for -na you drop -na and put -de

so this sentce is to be: atashi no fuku wa atatakute kawaii yo!

this is same for no matter how many adjective have!

but that is not all if you want to say "my clothes are not warm and cute" you must to make change:

so if you want to say me clothes are not warm and cute for -i adjective you make the -i drop and put -ku nakute but for -na you take off -na and put -ja nakute
PostPosted: Sun Jul 09, 2006 7:07 pm

if you want make adverb from adjective the -i become -ku and -na become -ni

there is still much more, so dont think this all twisted

if you want sya: her clothes is probably warm, you put darou, or politer, deshou

example: ano shito no fuku wa atatakai darou/deshou

if you want to say probably not:

with na adjective(example tokubetsu na) tokubetsu ja nai darou/deshou

with -i (example utsukushii) utsukushiku nai darou/deshou

if you want to say in past:

for -na: tokubetsu datta darou/deshou

for -i: utsukushi katta darou/deshou

if you want say past negative:

for -i utsukushiku nakatta darou/deshou

for -na tokubetsu ja nakatta darou/deshou
