Right now... I'm in love with our piano player in our jazz band. He's so good a comping, I mean... Perfection. He puts it in all the right places.

Bill Evans is far and away my favorite. My favorite compositions of his are Blue in Green and Flamenco Sketches. But some of his best work is when he does interpretations of other people's music. heart ninja pirate

right now i'm tackling his solo on What Is This Thing Called Love?, and it's super tricky! i love his chords and licks, though. this is the first time i've played a transcription of his solo, and it's really fun.

on April 15 i saw Dave Brubeck, and he was phenomenal! his quartet featured the new alto player, Bobby Millitello, and i was in awe. surprised this guy was soooooooooooooooo good; he lit the stage on fire with his solos. i could tell he was trying to sound a bit like Paul Desmond, but he ended up sounding more like Cannonball Adderley, which was great. Brubeck hasn't lost his touch either, and the guy seemed really grateful for his quartet and big band. the big band's last three songs were Blue Rondo A La Turk, Take Five, and Take the "A" Train, which were a thrill to listen to. guys, if Brubeck's ever in town, you must see him if you haven't already; it's a show you will never forget.

Bill Evans' Green Dolphin Street is definately a cool piece.
McCoy Tyner with Coltrane is great too.

I really like Oscar Peterson, because he's Canadian, and his pieces are fairly accessible to most pianists. I also like Count Basie. One of my fav pieces by Peterson is A Gentle Waltz, which I played in a Kiwanis festival (actually, it was played by two pianists!)
