“W-w-ait!” Kaanga stammered, noticing the purple hued male stalking away. She stumbled to the left and ran off after him, the desert’s hot earth warm against her paws. “Where are you going?” She bounded. It hadn’t occurred to her what she might have done- but suddenly there was a most pressing feeling of concern thrumming in her ears. If he left, she’d certainly not have anyone to talk to for at least until the afternoon.

“Why are you running away from Kaanga?” She peeped.

When the female came after him and told him to wait, he did. He stopped in his tracks and merely stood there, his long tail hanging down behind him and just barely touching the hot sand. His ears folded back as she seemed a little sad that he was leaving.

"Do you not want me to run away and leave you in peace?" he asked, not even looking at her. "You know, you have the power to tell me what to do," he hinted, settling down on his haunches yet still not even glancing in her direction. It wasn't that he didn't want to stay--he really liked her because she didn't treat him like garbage--it was more that he felt wrong. He was a slave and she was a high princess. They simply weren't supposed to mix.

Yet she seemed sincere enough when she wanted his company, so he wouldn't deny her wishes.

“Of course not!” Kaanga spoke, her frail voice peeking. “Why would Kaanga want you to go? Ashki may go whenever he wants to- but don’t go because he thinks that’s what Kaanga wants.” She crept forward and flicked the end of her tail, crossing underneath him and popping out near his left leg, her eyes trained to the bottom of his chin.

She considered this quietly, and pressed her head against his leg. “I won’t have anyone to talk to if you go yet.”

It was tragic perhaps- but, for all Ashki thought of her, it was but a fraction of what the pride really thought of the strange princess. Even her own mother seemed confused that she had birthed such a child. In her dreams- Kaanga heard the whispers.

Ashki frowned slightly, but it wasn't at her, it was at himself. He felt bad for thinking that she had wanted him gone. It was just that she had offended him a little and he hadn't really thought about what he was doing when he started to walk away.

"I'm sorry, Kaanga," he said quietly, looking down at his paws. Yet then she crawled underneath him and pressed her head against his leg. He was speechless for a good few moments. He'd never really had any physical contact with anyone his whole life, except for his mother of course.

"I-I'll stay, if you wish." If you wish. It was a common phrase amongst the slaves that he had known.

Kaanga looked upwards, her large yellow eyes blinking. She leaned against his foreleg with the corner of her slender, and almost frail shoulder, the corner of the young seer’s tail slowly swaying. “That’s not a good answer for Kaanga.” She peeped, and slowly shifted. “What does Ashki want? Kaanga would like for Ashki to stay- but, she’d like better for him to do what he wanted to do.”

Either way, she would manage. Kaanga was used to others leaving her, and it wouldn’t be the first time. But she was intrigued by this male- much more then she normally would have been on any other circumstance. Perhaps it was because he wasn’t firekin. She hated to think that she was so odd she couldn’t mesh with her own kind. Nervously, she pulled and furrowed her brow. It was not good for a princess to have such thoughts.

Ashki frowned again as the little female didn't seem satisfied with his answer. But it was really the only answer that he could give. He was used to people telling him to do things he didn't want to do or just plainly giving him orders. It wasn't anything new to him, and he didn't mind it one bit. Or, at least, that's what he told himself.

Sighing, he looked down at Kaanga again. "I don't mind either way, Miss," he said truthfully. "If you want me to stay, then I will stay. I like you Kaanga. I only walked away because I had thought maybe you'd wanted me gone. I am, after all, just a slave, Miss."

"And.. it really doesn't matter what I want. Slaves do not get what they want, Miss."

Kaanga sighed, and shook her head slowly. “No...then, you must not be a slave then. Doing what you are told will not do, Kaanga thinks. If Kaanga is a princess, then surely she can free you?” It was an unusual observation for the typically absent minded child. Possibly one of the rare occurrences where her seer traits bubbled forwards. [if not then staggering, and dying off in some dark corner of the white female’s mind.]

“I want Ashki to stay...” She spoke slowly. “But this is not a good place, Kaanga thinks. You are slave here. You should not be slave anymore. Because Kaanga said so.”

Ashki blinked and stayed silent for a few moments. It was true, Kaanga could free him from slavery if she so wished. But for some reason he didn't think that was such a good idea. If her pride held slaves, how would they react to her freeing one? Sure, he wasn't actually one of her pride's slaves, but he was still on their territory.

Sighing, he nodded. "Yes, you can free me if you wish." He held his tongue after that. Settling down on his haunches, he looked down at his paws. He wouldn't leave because she had said she didn't want him to. But he certainly didn't think it was right nor safe for him to be there.

Torn, the male simply curled his tail over his paws and waited.

Kaanga tilted her neck upwards and flattened her ears in a mock queenly expression. “Then I free you.” She said simply, and slowly flicked her tail. “Now you are not a slave anymore, because Kaanga has made it so.” It was no thought in her mind that it might anger some of the other pride to know she was off freeing slaves. But it wasn’t like Ashki was really their slave to be freeing. And honestly- they were already somewhat at ends with the peculiar female to begin with.

“Now what will Ashki do?”

Ash glanced down at the little female when she said that she had freed him. He blinked for a moment, not really knowing what to think of it. Since he was a very young cub he had been taught that he was worthless and the only way he'd be able to stay alive is if he served. Was he going to die now that he was no longer going to serve? Naive and a little senseless, he looked away, his ears folding back.

"I... do not know. I have nothing. There is no where for me to go, so it's not like I'm in a hurry."

“You have everywhere to go, that’s silly.” Kaanga repeated, and curled her tail. “If I was a big lion, and I didn’t live here, I’d go where the sun goes when it sleeps. You know? Right at the end of the world. That’s where Kaanga would go.” She turned slowly, and glanced through veiled eyes up at the sun. It was not yet ready to sink, although the hot glow was enough to prickle the skin. “You can go wherever you want! Kaanga thinks that’s amazing.”

“Where would you like to go? If you could go anywhere in the world?” Kaanga pursed her thin lips, and peered at the horizon line. “That’s where you should go, I think. Because in the place your supposed to be, people know you there and they wait for you. Right?”

Ashki looked away, embarassed. Kaanga was younger than him and yet had more sense of the world and how life should be lived. All he knew was how to serve. It made him feel ashamed. It made him think that he should never have left home. Back home, he had felt like he fit in, if only amongst the other slaves. He had felt useful there, no matter how many times he was beaten or felt completely exhausted at the end of each day.

Feeling like he really shouldn't be here anymore, he got up carefully, making sure not to make the little female fall over or anything of the sort.

"I have to go," he murmured quietly as he dragged his paws and went with his head down low. "It was nice to meet you, miss Kaanga." Then with that he walked slowly away.
