I've really enjoyed a few japanese horrors, but lots have also been really dissapointing. I rented one video the other day called "Japans 5 best horror stories" or something like that, it was horrible >_>

"OH NOEZ, TEH BRONDES ARE ATTACKING~!"

Anyone here seen Sucide Club(suicide circle)? That movie was weird. Dx Creepy, funny, riduculous, but weird.

I would say J-Horror is better...and here are some movies to name a few:

-Ju-On 1, 2, and 3 (also the american remakes of 1 and 2 were decent.)
-Ringu
-Pulse
-Audition(Creepy!...kinda)

But one I was perticuarly fond of was "Infection" that movie ROCKED! it was extremely gorey with a very creppy, crawly, get under your skin feeling.

I hafta say, I've seen both the Japanese and American versions of The Ring, and I found the American far more scary, as well as more interesting. However, the Japanese version /did/ have Towel Man and "Frolic in brine, goblins be thine", which just rule. I'd definitely re-watch the American rather than the Japanese version of the Ring, though.

I haven't seen the Japanese version. How many Ringu films were there, anyway? I'm curious about the "frolic in brine, goblines be thine" thing you mentiioned...

From my memory, about four. Or was it five.

There was the original Ringu, Ringu Virus, which was written off as the sequal, so they made another Ringu... something. And then there's the Ringu Full Circle or something, where they explore Sadako's past. There may be another, though, I'm not sure.

I honestly prefer Asian horror for the supernatural thrills, and the American 'horror' if I'm feeling particularly sadistic/gorey that day and want to see bloodshed. *shrugs*

I love The Eye [Cantonese], Audition, Ringu series, One Missed Call, Suicide Club... xd I love One Missed Call, it's just so... yeah. I've got the Dark Water, Ringu, and Suicide Circle's manga, too.

I've also seen Takeshi Miike's Imprint and that was... imprinting. *shrugs* But I still like other Asian horror better...

I also forgot Uzumaki, which is also a film and manga. I love and it's... spiralyness. xd

While America has a lot of very good and gory horror movies, most of them just don't cut it when actual horror comes along. It builds up very fast and the it's over. You think "Oh, well this would never happen in real life".

Then you watch a J-horror. Either it builds up and never booms and you think "He... that wasn't so bad... I think..." Or it explodes and you feel like running away screaming.

America makes decent horror movies, when they are coming up with their own stuff and not some knock-off.

But what I hate the most is when they say it's BASED on a true story, and they emphasise WAY too much.

An American Haunting, for example. In the Unrated version, John Bell raped Betsy Bell, and that's a load of bull.

I prefer the Japanese ones because they are actually scary. They use superstitions and myths with a good dash of suspense to tell a story.
They don't just go through and kill a bunch of people as messily as they can like most of the newer American "horror" films. I feel the Japanese ones just have more culture and realism to them that they can be scary.

On a slightly seperate note,I recommend Great Horror Family. It's a Japanese horror/comedy by the guy who came up with Ju-On(Grudge).

In the past year I've had the pleasure of watching a whole bunch more J-Horror, and I've gotta say that my position of "Both have their merits" remains.

Marebito was a fantastic movie for the first twenty minutes, up until he finds the girl - J-Horror movies are great for having an interesting social phenomenon pop up, but suck at trying to make it feel compelling enough. Kairo (the movie that inspired Pulse) had a brilliant idea (the Forbidden Rooms were great), but it was poorly executed - there was far too much Scooby-Doo "Let's split up and look for clues!" going on, which contradicted the movies' central theme. I started watching Ju-On - the Grudge, and while I like the idea of the overlapping lives of each character, it wasn't scary/cool in the same way the American remake was, and I got bored and stopped watching. This is coming from the guy who freaks out at Fatal Frame 2 near constantly - I actually /got bored/ of the movie before I got scared.
