I've been developing an avatar creation system that I plan to implement into my phpBB forum as well, and I was just wondering what you guys would rather see? I'm just wondering so I can sort of take a poll. Gaia has seemed to have captured the ideal size and style of their avatars, and I'm thinking a Chibi-esque figure will have to be the way to go. A proportional one the size of these would be so miniscule you wouldn't even be able to make out the items. Anyways, my forum is sort of a darker one, and vaguely based around fantasy, ad I was just wondering if you would rather see something like different races as opppose to being able move your arms, or turn around. There would be race and gender specific clothing for most things, but overall, I like the idea better. I also wasn't sure about whether to use .gif or .pngs. I'm currently using .png's. Anyways, hopefully someone will get back to me on this.. razz
Ohhh, and there's a demo of what I have here: Keep in mind, these are by far, test graphics, and the interface is as simple as I could get, I just wanted to keep the initial engine creation to a minimum, I'm currently working on sending the information to the database, so it can be retrieved and edited.

Sorry about the long reply.
Different races yes. But have it so that anyone can wear any type of clothing. Another idea would be different ages (5, 14, 25, 90)and weights (fat, skinny, normal).
Just look at the suggestion/petition forum here and you will get some good ideas.
Dark forum sounds like a bad idea.
PS the demo does not work.

Sorry, I linked it to the wrong folder. It would be difficult to make things for everybody, since for every 1 item, you'd have to draw it say 24 times if you have 3 races, and then 4 ages, and gender.. I haven't made my layout for the forum yet, so I'm not sure if it's going to be how dark, but I plan to make visibilty easy no matter what I choose. But yeah, I'll check out the petition forum. Demo

Well, I've finally got it to write to the database when you finalize it, though the current version's in a different folder. Now the hard part.. porting it to phpBB...

Only one suggestion for the avatars. Make them have mouths and make them smaller.

Hm, I see pink eyes, one hairstyle, and that's it. Ah, I see, had to refresh, damn cache issues, are you sure you're deleting the image at the end of the script? Also, do you have any other emotions set up? Just the facial like that seems to be really a good way to do it, anything else added on would be so large you wouldn't be able to see any fine details, and being able to 'decorate' their faces would make your users feel a bit more special than they would spending all the time they do dressing up on gaia. If they do, that is. You wouldn't just be making boring shirts and stuff this way, either, you'd be able to make all sorts of cool accessories for the face, rings and piercings, stuff like that.
