12345Such a pretty house~ Renjyo loved pretty houses~! Pretty places, pretty people, everything was so pretty. Except, of course for the unpretty things. Like the lab beneath the house that Mekt thought no one knew about. All metal and yucky, the place wasn't pretty at all! It shouldn't be there amidst all the pretties! It made Renjyo sad!
12345The little girl sat on her bed, taking in the smooth, silk sheets of gorgeous midnight blue, her mahogany chest of drawers with all her new clothes, and, of course, the chest of pretties. Renjyo liked her pretties~
12345As she understood it, Renjyo was free to stay within the walls of this house for as long as she chose-- longer, maybe. It all depended on what the choices were! Then again, Renjyo didn't know if she liked the idea of staying longer than she chose, that would be mean! Mean was bad. Mean was very bad.
12345...Renjyo was bored.
12345This wasn't the type of bred that went away easily either. This was the sink its fangs deep into your soul and suck you dry of every happy, unbored moment you had bored! It made Renjyo very unhappy, very upset, and very, very unhappy! She need to do something, something big, something strong, something...
12345Something like find the boy who'd been watching from the window. He was funny-looking, all white and red and white and more white. Renjyo wanted to talk to him, find out what was wrong with him that he was all funny looking. And sad. And scared. No need to be scared in the house of pretties, right? After all, pretties made people happy! Maybe he needed more pretties? Renjyo could give him lots of pretties. Renjyo was the Queen of pretties-- or the Princess, since queens were old and stuffy and not-fun.
12345Renjyo wanted to make everyone in the house happy with pretties. Except maybe blonde-girl. She wasn't very nice. Blue-skinned-weird person. She didn't like Renjyo much, seemed to think the little girl was going to interfere in everything! What was everything anyway? Renjyo didn't know, didn't really care. She had her own everything to worry about-- much more important than blue-skinned-girl's everything. Much, much more important.
12345Renjyo's everything involved lots of pretties and fun! Renjyo liked her idea of everything! Blue-skinned-girl's idea of everything probably involved fighting and cotton and that wasn't pretty or fun! Renjyo should make sure her idea of everything happened instead of blue-skinned-girl's 'cause otherwise there might not be any more pretties, and that would be sad, and then Renjyo would be sad, and Renjyo didn't like being sad, she liked being happy 'cause happy was good!
12345Skipping out of her room to go find white-weird-boy-with-too-much-white, Renjyo starting singing to herself a little song she'd heard on the television not too long ago. "Can't even scream, can't even cry, the Gentlemen are coming by~"
12345"Yui! There you are! I needed to talk to you about finding you a school, sweetheart!" Raven smiled as she caught Renjyo in a hug.
12345...school? School wasn't fun!
12345...or maybe it could be. Renjyo smiled and gave Raven a kiss on the cheek. "Okay, Mommy~"

12345"All right, everyone! We're going on a trip!
12345Four pairs of eyes turned to stare at Raven's absolutely insane statement.
12345"...what...?" Raven blinked, glancing around between the four kids who each were giving her a look of disbelief. "...you don't want to go on a trip, children?"
12345"...does it mean that much to you?" Rekka spoke first of the children. Glancing at the rest of his siblings nervously, the little JRocker sighed. "I mean, it's not that big of a deal..."
12345"Does this trip involve copious amounts of sunlight?" Mekt put in, eyes never leaving Raven.
12345"Some, not too much," Raven admitted, "so no. Not copious amounts..."
12345"Does this trip involve copious amounts of 'bonding time'?" Mekt asked.
12345"Hey, it's not like I'm torturing you guys!" Raven protested. "Maybe--"
12345"I think we should go." Hera glanced at her 'brother', silencing any further questions he might have. "It could be fun. And even if it's not, it apparently means something to Mom, so we should go."
12345"Renjyo thinks so too~ heart Renjyo thinks we should go with Mommy and have lots of fun with everyone together!" the little girl piped up, bouncing over to give Raven a tight hug.
12345Well, it was settled then. The five of them got in Raven's car-- with some pushing and protesting about who got to sit where-- the final result being that Mekt, being the oldest, got to sit up front with Raven, while the other three piled into the back.
12345They drove for what seemed, to some of the kids, like hours. In fact, it was only half an hour or so, until they got to the park. It was nearing sunset-- it had taken that long to actually get everyone ready to go, since Mekt demanded he be allowed to wear his trenchcoat, even though it was getting hot out, Renjyo wanted to wear her hair with the red ribbon instead of the blue, Rekka had stolen one of Renjyo's dresses... and Hera... actually, Hera hadn't had any clothing problems. She'd been lounging outside by the car since the decision had been made to leave.
12345The multitude of cars already parked made for an interesting attempt to get a space with Renjyo calling out every time she spotted one and Raven attempting to get there. It didn't take long before they finally connected and a space opened that Raven could easily pull into. Running out of time, Raven scooped up Renjyo and Rekka, motioning for the pair of older children to follow on foot as she locked the car and checked for the wand in her purse. Damn. Things happened too fast.
12345--and there! Just as the family got to the beach and spread out blankets to sit on, the fireworks show started to the sound of a band beginning to play. Glorious fire-flowers danced in the sky over hundreds of families on the beach, all listening to the patriotic tunes being brought to full flourish. The glowing sky seemed to shimmer with the energy of fire and absolute gorgeous wonder. Raven's wand was glowing, but that wasn't an issue, right? Right. Of course...
12345They were all a family, and they were all together. That was what it was about.

12345Bored~ Being bored wasn't fun. In fact, it was really, really not fun. It made Renjyo unhappy. So unhappy she wanted to make it more fun by doing something like going out and finding someone to make them play nice and have fun. But Mekt was down in his stuffy lab and Hera was off in her trees that didn't have houses, and Rekka was off at his lessons with Mommy and Auntie Winter was trying to make sure everyone was going to get dinner tonight, so there wasn't anyone for Renjyo to play with! Not fun! Not fair!
12345It wasn't like the little girl was that demanding, either. She just wanted to have fun and not have people get in her way of having fun and not have people put her in situations where she couldn't have fun. Was that too much to ask for? Apparently because she wasn't having fun just sitting on her bed wishing she could find someone to play nice with and have fun with. She hadn't even gotten to go shopping like Mommy had promised! That wasn't very nice of her. Even if Mommy had said sometime in August and it was only July, it still wasn't nice of her to let Renjyo get bored. No one should have to be bored.
12345You'd think with three siblings, a mommy and an auntie living in the same house, there'd be something to do. But there was really... nothing. Because Renjyo didn't want to go read stuffy books like Mekt did when he wasn't in his lab and didn't have better things to do, and she didn't want to go and do dangerous stuff like climb trees like Hera did, and she didn't get to go to music lessons till next week, so there wasn't much she could do.
12345Not fair not fair not fair!
12345...maybe she could sneak out? Go to one of the other houses she'd heard Mommy and Auntie talking about? Meet some of the other interesting kids, the ones who did crazy-silly things like fly around and steal things from churches in places with names like 'Venezia'.
12345No... that wouldn't be fun. Besides, then Mommy would get worried and sad and that really wouldn't be fun. When Mommy was unhappy bad things happened like people getting mad and sad all at once because no one liked seeing Mommy sad because Mommy took care of everyone. So Renjyo couldn't go sneak out and meet the crazy-silly people at the other houses. She had to stay at this one even though she was bored-bored-bored-bored-bored. Not fair, not fair, not--
12345Hm. Maybe she could go downstairs and bother Mekt in his ultra-secret-lab that all the kids in the house knew about? That had potential to be fun. He'd get so unhappy that Renjyo was in his secret place! But she was supposed to be nice to her siblings. Maybe she shouldn't. Mekt was her big brother, after all, and that meant that she should take care of him and like him, even if it was just a little.
12345So there really was nothing to do... that made Renjyo sad! She wanted there to be something to do so she wouldn't get bored and do something silly-crazy like run out looking for adventure on her-- hey... that wasn't a bad idea. Just for a little bit. Go find adventure on her own, look for something strange and un-ordinary and boring. Find something she'd been dreaming of instead of waiting for it to find her!
12345...but it was getting dark outside. Auntie Winter was calling people to come eat dinner before it got cold. Oh well. Renjyo could save the going off and finding her own adventure plan for another day-- maybe a rainy day! Then she could go out and get wet and dance in the rain and splash in the puddles! That would be fun! Then she could come back, all wet and soaked and Mommy would be mad but she'd bundle Renjyo up in a towel and take her away somewhere warm so they could talk about how Renjyo mustn't do that ever again 'cause she worried Mommy terribly when she did things like that because Mommy cared enough to want to know where her babies were all the time and yes, Renjyo was still Mommy's little baby even though she was a grown-up little kiddlet in her own eyes.

Renjyo had a new brother. A big brother, one who smirked and did fun things like play with swords. A big brother who acted like a big brother, rather than hiding within the silly lab all the time like Mekt did. Renjyo liked her new brother.
He even took the time to hold Renjyo and tickle her and tease her-- wrestle with her! It was fun! It made Renjyo happy that her brother cared about her! Renjyo liked being with people, and unlike her other siblings, Nasir liked people too!
Someone to play with. Someone to make her not bored all the time. It was like someone had answered all of Renjyo's happy-making prayers! It was good! Fun!--
But strange. Sometimes Nasir looked at people with his shiny eyes and seemed like he was thinking about hurting them. Or maybe just making them feel bad. But either way, it made Renjyo feel like there was something going on because sometimes it was weird and sometimes it wasn't. Nasir was her big brother though, and that meant a lot. That meant a lot more than just silly feelings that made Renjyo's insides feel bad and twisted in the not-fun way.
Didn't it?
Even though he was newest to the family, Nasir was the oldest except maybe for Mommy and Aunties, but he was still the one who paid the most attention to Renjyo, probably because he was nice about it and didn't mind spending time with the girl, not like silly Mekt who wanted to hide in his lab all the time or Hera who wanted to do things like climb trees and get dirty or Kiku who made Renjyo hiss on the inside far inside where no one could hear it.
Strange things happening. Renjyo didn't understand it, why there were so many siblings. But they happened. Rekka and the two other boys who played pretty music had left, gone away to another house where Arch and Raven tookk care of them when Raven wasn't here. So there were three less siblings to play with, but now there was Nasir, who made only two less, and Nasir was worth more than two or three, so he was lots better!
Renjyo didn't know if it was right or wrong to think like that. It wasn't nice to think that Rekka and Kyo and Yuki were worth less together than Nasir by himself, but he actually paid attention to Renjyo and made her feel special like a little princess! He even promised to take her out sometime to see things special and fun, not like the other people in the house who wanted to do what they wanted to do, not what Renjyo wanted to do.
So Renjyo would wait and spend time with her new big brother till he chose to leave the house, then she'd follow him. 'Cause everyone big left eventually, it seemed, so Renjyo would just have to make sure she stayed with him because he paid attention to Renjyo and that was important! Very, very important.

Sweet music floating through the air on the wings of the birds that flew outside like all the different shinies which glittered in Raven's secret places. Renjyo liked the music-- prettiful music which made the little girl giddy inside because music had a voice and the voice spoke to Renjyo in ways that people couldn't, told her to come and play different games that other people hadn't let her play before. Renjyo liked the idea of playing. Playing was fun.
Renjyo'd found Mommy's music collection. Sweet happy music and sad dark music and music that was bad and music that was good and music that said funny things that made Renjyo giggle and music that screamed and music that cried-- music made Renjyo happy. Renjyo wanted to keep listening to the music but Mommy would find out that Renjyo had her music and then Mommy would be sad but Mommy had been in her room for a long, long time while Renjyo had been playing because Mommy liked her rock and her stick a lot and lots and lots of liking made people stay with what they liked for a long time.
But the pictures in the music collection were fun too-- pictures of people who dressed in silly outfits and people who dressed in little outfits and people who dressed in all different kinds of outfits because they felt like it. Renjyo didn't know if she liked all the outfits or not-- some were pretty and some were weird it was hard to tell the difference. Renjyo wanted to cling to the pretties and listen to the pretty music but sometimes the pretties didn't have pretty music and Renjyo was sad! Renjyo didn't like being sad, being sad was bad because when Renjyo was sad she felt all yucky on the inside and if Renjyo felt yucky on the inside it wasn't good.
"Playing again, little one?"
Brother! Renjyo whirled about with a big grin lighting up the little girl's face. "Niichan~!" she giggled, glomping Nasir and clinging to him. "Niichan came to see Renjyo? Did Niichan finish sword training thing?"
Nasir nodded, mildly amused by the little girl's way of putting things. "Did you want to do something? I promised we could spend some time together."
Renjyo giggled. Of course she wanted to do something with Niichan! Niichan was nice and fun and all those good things wrapped up into one big person who could spin her around and play with her. Other people didn't like Niichan, but Renjyo didn't like other people, so there! "What did Niichan wanna do with Renjyo?" she asked, toying with Nasir's jewelry now that the older boy had scooped her into his arms.
"Whatever you like, little one," he smiled, tousling her hair.
Would there ever be another brother as nice as Niichan? Of course not! Niichan loved Renjyo-- more than anyone else did! Mommy was always busy now, no time to play-- but Niichan played with Renjyo... Niichan loved Renjyo! That made it all ok.

...:: 9.11.06 ::...Pretty, pretty clothings with pretty shinies attached and pretty pretty people watching slipping by in secret dances with pretties. Did anyone else see the pretties? Renjyo giggled to herself as she moved through the store, clinging to Raven’s arm. Pretties for the pretty little girl! Renjyo loved pretties, Raven had promised pretties, and now they were here looking at pretties!
Pretty lacy things and pretty striped things and pretties! Renjyo already knew what pretties she wanted-- she'd seen the pictures in the magazines she’d snuck. So she pushed Raven along, giggling and clinging to the girl, wanting to get everything now as opposed to later because later just wouldn’t be nearly as fun!
First things first-- ears had to be pierced. It hurt, and Renjyo wasn’t happy but they were pretty, little diamonds for little ears. Raven hadn’t really wanted Renjyo to get her ears pierced, but Raven had been saying no and then got that funny thinking look on her face and decided yes was good to say. Yes was always good to say to Renjyo, ne~? That’s what Renjyo thought at least.
Next a pretty hat, pretty top, pretty EVERYTHING! Raven was saying silly things like ‘you’re a little young for these kinds of clothes’, but Raven didn’t seem to mind that much. Maybe Raven knew that Renjyo was just pretty and deserved to have all the pretty things she wanted! Or maybe Raven wanted Renjyo to see the pretties and decide for herself? Because Raven liked giving Renjyo pretties because it made everything pretty but also because it made everything calm and happy and it also didn’t do anything bad and Raven liked it when things went nicely and Raven liked it.
Or maybe Raven had other reasons and Renjyo just didn’t know. Either way, Renjyo got her pretties! It made her so so so so so so so so so happy to get her pretties! She’d been waiting all this time, months and months to get the pretties, and now she finally had them!
Renjyo could’ve spent hours at the mall, just surrounding herself with all the pretties that existed in the pretty stores but Raven dragged her away after they got a few hundred dollars worth of clothes because she didn’t need more than that or something. Renjyo thought she needed the pretties, but maybe Raven would take her back sometime and buy her new pretties?
Once back at the house, Renjyo played dress up, toying with her hair. Her new hat didn’t fit on her head with her ponytail, but it was ok. Renjyo could always just have the hat for pretty show? She didn’t know, she liked her pretty hat, but her pretty ribbons for her hair were pretty too! Oh no... how could she choose between the pretties? Renjyo didn’t want to choose, she wanted it to just be all pretty and happy! Why was it difficult? Not nice... Renjyo wanted it to be nice.
Oh well. The little girl knew she could take the time and make it pretty and happy later even if now things weren’t pretty and happy because eventually the pretty and happy would become darker and deeper so it was okay if things weren’t pretty and happy now because they would become pretty and happy and then they would become not pretty and happy again like in all the crazy songs Renjyo listened to...
((Renjyo’s preteen outfit is supposed to be based on this picture in reds and blacks. xD She’s starting shopping early.))

It had been supposed to be a 'girl's night out' at the Nest, with Hera taking charge, herding the other girls towards the movie theatre. Eri was (kind of) the oldest, so she was the one driving, but Hera, with the much more dominant personality, directed the endeavor. The drive itself progressed mostly uneventfully, except for the bickering over who would sit where, with it finally being decided that Kiku would sit in the back between Imelda's car-seat and Erianthe's demanded seat. Renjyo and Eleanor were pushed to the center of the van, with Hera taking shotgun as appointed navigator. It wasn't that bad, Hera reflected as they drove in mostly silence-- it had only taken them two hours to get into the car and settled. Not bad at all.
Surprisingly enough, the choice of movie hadn't been too difficult either. That was the part which truly surprised Hera, since she'd estimated another hour of bickering before they mutually agreed on the movie. Undoubtedly that was the doing of Kiku's dazed nature over the past few months, Erianthe and Imelda's near worship of Erimentha, and the fact that Renjyo and Eleanor were easily overruled in these cases.
"All right! So, Music and Lyrics it is!" Hera proclaimed, inwardly grimacing. This was one of those lovey-dovey movies that the girl would just gag over, but what choice did she have? The other kids had all agreed. Who was she to be the downer at this point?
Imelda whined as she clung to Eri, not liking the dark of the theatre as they entered. Too dark for the little orchid girl, she didn't like the dark... but there were pretty sounds and Eri's pearl earrings glowed in the dark. That made it a little better as they were led deeper into the theatre, to where they all sat in a nice row, a slight scuffle for who got to sit where taking up the bulk of the previews.
Was this what it was going to be like when she had her own little child? Eri wondered as she indulged Imelda, letting the baby sit on her lap. This kind of closeness, this way they all laughed, related so well to each other-- would this be what it was like? Would her child fit in with the cousins as well as they all fit together? What if she or he didn't? Would that-- no thinking now. Movie.
Erianthe smirked slightly to herself as they sat in the dark, her tail swooshing about in anticipation of what was coming. The lights were off and now they would watch and then they would play! Girl's night out had its wonderful moments. It was why Erianthe knew she could always count on her cousins to play with. They loved being tricked or at least responded well-- oooooh! MUSIC.
Quiet, Kiku watched the movie, not really paying attention. Too much had been happening recently. There had been a rush of pieces of information, Aunt Arch, who carried that strange sense like her Teacher, though the Lady claimed to not know Kiku... and then, of course, Eri, who seemed to be older, but she'd only just come into the family... Kiku didn't understand all of it. Perhaps she wasn't meant to. Either way, it seemed odd, and it kept her from considering things the way she normally would. She had to lose herself in the movie.
This movie really had been Renjyo's choice-- though she'd never admit that to Hera, since big mean older sister would probably have chosen a different one. She'd let Eri know which one she'd wanted to see and watched her cousin skillfully convince everyone to listen because everyone listened to Eri because she was the new one and the sweet one and didn't live with them, which made it easier on everyone. But Renjyo had heard the music and she wanted to hear more and more and more because that was the way that you learned about the music. It was different kind of music, pretty costumes than the rock from Japan Renjyo had consumed herself with recently, but not bad. Good, even... good to learn more about music.
Eleanor watched in silence, not really understanding. She'd only agreed to come along on this outing because... well, frankly, it was more interesting than staying at home with the adults and males. And besides, movies were interesting-- a way to observe that which was real which had become false which was being portrayed as something real. She could appreciate the irony in all of it, the way no one really did or said what they meant, all from a script someone had dreamed up to try to express something which didn't really exist.
After the movie, Eri took the girls to get ice cream, wondering when, really, they would be able to head back to the house. After all, things were happening now, and Eri was somewhat anxious to get back to her precious cabbage plant, even if it meant cutting short her time with her cousins. Ah well. Best to go with what was happening here, letting the girls have their fun, right? Besides, they were on their way soon enough, back to the house, back towards the rest of the family.
Something was different about Eri now, and Immy didn't like it. She didn't want her Eri to not pay attention, to be distracted enough to make it so Immy felt left out. Eri was the only one who really would play with Immy, and the fact that Eri wasn't being her usual self made the little Vale unhappy. It wasn't fair, wasn't right. Things weren't supposed to be done this way. It wasn't the way she was used to. It made Immy want to scream, but Eri had responded badly to screams in the past. Unhappily, the little girl shifted in Eri's arms, sucking on the spoonful of ice cream she'd been given.
Something weird was happening with the family tonight. It wasn't the same as it usually was, with their rampant running about playing tag in the dark. Eri felt weird, Kiku was being a cloudhead the way she'd been since Aunty Arch showed up at the Nest for the first time with Eri in tow, Renjyo was being quiet for once, seeming to digest the movie, Eleanor was never any fun, Hera was being bossy like usual, and Immy was just a baby, so Erianthe felt more than a little frustrated. She wanted to go somewhere, do something. Break into the zoo and see all the animals, something heroic! Something that took courage! But no one else seemed to have that drive tonight, which was a disappointment. 'Anthe was still too young to do this sort of thing on her own. So she just sulked a little, eating her double chocolate chocolate mint ice cream with chocolate sprinkles and chocolate fudge sauce and wanting everythings to go back to the way they were supposed to be.
Maybe it was just that the movie had been strange, but Hera could feel the tension in her sisters and her cousin. Things weren't going well. "All right, time to head home, I think," Hera finally decided, the blue girl pushing a strand of hair back, annoyed that it had fallen free of her high ponytail. "Besides, it's getting cold, and since no one really thought to bring a jacket," a pointed look at Renjyo and Erianthe, the two who were beginning to shiver slightly, "we should get back before people get sick and Mom gets mad at us. All right?"
Hera was always so bossy! But Renjyo shrugged, finishing up her vanilla ice cream and tossing it away. She'd gotten all dressed up for tonight, and she wasn't even getting to show it off? Oh well. The movie had been fun, with songs about sweet people and strange loves and people who were saying things they didn't mean and doing things they didn't say. People people.
"You probably want to wash off your makeup before we get back," Eleanor murmured to Renjyo. None of the other girls had really noticed the child's attempt at makeup-- a half-decent attempt, in Renjyo's defense. "Mother won't be pleased to know you've been in her collection again.
Renjyo rolled her eyes as she wiped it off, part of her glad Eleanor remembered to remind her. Mother had already gotten angry at her once for that same thing-- Renjyo wasn't really ready to repeat that.
Standing as well, Kiku moved to the car, gently helping herd everyone else along. The night had been spoiled before it had even begun, hadn't it? Something strange was infecting the girls of this family, and Kiku had yet to discover what it was...

Eleanor stared out at the sunset on the roof of the house, relaxing in the fading heat of the day. It was... pretty. Striking. At least, so she was told. She didn't really understand what they meant. It was nothing that didn't happen every night. And yet... she'd made a deal with Renjyo that between the two of them, they'd each try seeing it from the other's point of view for a week to try to get a better environment in the house, since everyone had been on edge, and the two younger girls wanted to fix that. And now... how could she admit to Renjyo that she'd been coming up here everyday, just as Renjyo did, and couldn't understand the 'wonder', Renjyo felt, the 'longing'?
Stepping onto the roof, Renjyo smiled slightly at the sight of Eleanor trying to relax and yet trying so hard to figure out what was out there that Renjyo adored. "Can't do it, can you?" Renjyo laughed quietly as she moved to sit next to Eleanor.
Turning to stare at the older girl who'd come out here to talk to her, Eleanor shrugged. "...it's... harder than I thought," she admitted after a long moment. "I thought that... I'd be able to understand this by now." And this was just the first part she'd wanted to try to understand about her sister to complete the trade. "...but it doesn't make any sense to me."
"I'm not surprised it doesn't make sense to you," Renjyo confessed, smiling slightly at the beauty of the sunset. "You have a hard time with the emotional stuff. Just like I have a hard time giving it up long enough to understand you. But... we still get along better than the rest of the family, right?" she suggested gently.
So... Renjyo was saying that it was okay if they didn't understand each other? When had the little girl gotten this sort of wisdom? It was uncharacteristic of her. Eleanor turned to look at Renjyo, considering her for a long moment, questioning with those dark eyes.
"...I've been talking a lot with Kiku. She says some interesting things about how we should deal with each other when she's not jumpy about everything," Renjyo shrugged, giving Eleanor a slight smile. "Does that make sense?" she offered as she turned back to the sun setting over the woods surrounding the house. "I want to try to be more like her. She's calmer."
Calmer... but still passionate. Eleanor understood the distinction, also knew that Renjyo didn't prefer one sister over the other. It was all right then. It was okay. They didn't have to understand each other, as long as they were all right with each other, as long as they could relax with one another, they didn't get upset with one another over everything. What were they, boys? They didn't need to focus on the differences and search to face them. "All right then."
Watching the sun set further behind the horizon, Renjyo leaned against her sister until the night fell, until the chill chased them both inside again. This crazy world...

*Frozen: When a pet is forced to remain in it's current stage indefinitely due to an owner's failure to comply with contractual obligations made and understood prior to the purchase of the pet. Additionally, the journal is locked and ownership is still retained despite the frozen state.
