Nathaniel "Than" Karlet

Name: Nathaniel Karlet
Nickname: Than
Age: Perma-Preteen
Eye color: Brown
Hair color: A weird blondish color
Height: Kinda short and scrawny
Weight: I need both arms to lift him, so that's good-ish...

Likes: ... sucking his thumb?
Dislikes: Being in this new place.

Personality: None, lol ((Eww, I just loled. xp ))
Temperment: Mild-mannered, so far; a little paranoid

Origin: Than was/is an original character of mine. He did not lead a happy early childhood in my story, no. His mother died when he was about five, and his father turned into a drunken, abusive b*****d. There is, of course, more to this story, but some aspects will either be developed through his GCB form, or won't appear at all.

Adrian Vincent Karlet

Name: Read the title. >_>
Nicknames: The Bun, A. V., Adri', 'Drian, "Ardian," but never KAR or KARL.
Age: Nobody knows
Eye color: Blue
Hair color: Brown, for the moment; usually purple
Height: 5'-something... a little short
Weight: I can't bench-press my own weight

Likes: Taking in little brats and taking care of them. Or letting his other, older brats take care of 'em. ^^;
Dislikes: A few things

Personality: He means well, he really does; he's just a little... off.
Temperment: Patient but with a quick-temper. Oxymoron? You decide.

Origin: Well, when a man and a woman love each other very much... Adrian has amnesia and doesn't know where he came from. Other than he was a prince, once. He doesn't go around telling that to everybody anymore. He lives with his old childhood friend, Kanth, the only person he vaguely recognizes from his past. He worked as a fisherman for sometime after arriving in Barton Town. Kanth took him in, and Adrian found better jobs and started bringing home strays.

Family, Friends, Other People

Soco - the live-in maid/butler/babysitter/librarian/do-it-all-person of the mansion. Came from GD's mansion. Adrian hired him. He's still become "part of the family."

Kaleb - pink-haired, canine-like, music-lovin' teenage boy. Came from Avirige High, where Adrian took a job, months after Kaleb moved in.

Hana - a bipedal tiger with a serious attitude problem. She came from a psychiatric place, after Adrian "helped" her, so it's to be expected.

Malachite - the girly-boy with a penchant for all things green... and girly. Also came from GD's mansion.

Rayen - a felinoid. 'Nuff said. Came from the woods around GD's mansion, but Adrian found him in a busy street market and took him home.

-+-

... He has no friends. emo

-+-

Est-Unos - Kaleb's boyfriend, from Avirige High, who sometimes comes over to hang out.

Kilayla - a friend of Soco's. From Catzi's place.

Benjamin - Rayen's "boyfriend" of sorts; an orange felinoid.

Gifts and Items

And here we'll have some items and gifts and stuff he puts in his pockets. Good thing I'm making him do his own laundry. Even better for those who look in the washing machine afterward. ("Ooo, a penny!")

Etc.

This is the last one, just for anything else I might need it for. Or he might need it for. He looks like a tricky bugger. A little shy, but you know... never trust the shy ones. >.>

If dreams are wishes a heart makes when one is asleep, Nathaniel wasn't sure that he wanted all of his dreams to come true.

He didn't know where he came from, or if he had parents. But in his dreams he had parent-figures. There was a woman -- a beautiful, slim, professional-looking woman with long, gold-colored hair. She was his dream-self's mother. Her husband, his dream-self's father, often appeared as only a large, dark shadow, with no discernable features at all.

On a good night, he would watch his dream-self's mother fawn over him and take care of him... love him in a way he had never experienced in the waking world.

Often times she would tell him it was time to get up, or the dream would fade as he returned to consciousness.

Left to play themselves out, the dreams usually progressed the same way.

The mother would disappear, and Nathaniel recognised that she was... gone.

On other nights, however, he dreamed of living with the father-figure, and it was always after the mother had gone away. The father-figure, consumed by grief, turned to alcohol for comfort, all but forgetting the small boy that watched him and begged for his attention.

And when the man's sense of comfort gave way to violent rages, Nathaniel's dream-self took the brunt of them.

After this nightmare, he'd awake with a start. Sometimes, when the mother went away, he would even wake up in tears.

Nathaniel thought it foolish. Why should he cry over someone who didn't exist? She was only in his imagination, after all. Why should he care?

But he found that he did care.

As he spent his days at the mansion owned by the man known simply as "GD," he felt out of place amongst the wild and crazy youngsters that lived there. The noise bothered him. GD's constant inebriation bothered him, and he figured it was because of the nightmares. As time went on, he felt that he belonged more in the dream-world than in the real-world.

It was on this particular morning when Nathaniel awoke -- not from a nightmare -- but to the sounds of screaming and thudding in the hallway outside his room. He was used to it being noisy, but this was just loud, and a lot worse than usual. He rubbed the sleep out of his eyes and rolled out of bed. Someone had left the bedroom door open, and he glaced up just in time to see a small flock of boys surrounding a man who was crawling down the hallway -- giving piggy-back rides, by the looks of it.

"Gidd'yup! Gidd'yup, Karlet!" one boy was cheering.

Another asked, "Can't dis thing go 'ny faster?"

"Me next, me next!"

"Oowww, not so hard, you guys!" came the weak protest beneath them.

Nathaniel blinked and watched as the procession went past the door. He followed after them, curious as to who this stranger was and why he was tolerating such abuse. He caught up to them when they reached the open room at the end of the hallway.

The man rolled over, making strange and silly noises as he toppled the boys off his back, causing them to shriek and cling to him.

"Me neeexxttt~"

"I wanna ride again!"

"C'mon, just a little further?"

"I wanna turn!"

"Give me a break, and I'll see if I can handle another ride or two," the man said, flopping onto his back -- only to be tackled by half a dozen boys. "Urglf..."

"Go again! Go again!"

"C'mon~ Karlet!"

"Get 'im!"

Unamused, Nathaniel continued staring at the spectacle as the man -- this 'Karlet,' as the boys were calling him -- wrestled the boys off of him and finally got to his feet. It was then that the man noticed Nathaniel staring at him.

"Hello," Karlet said, staring back. "Who's this?"

The boy froze, eyes widening slightly. He was asking his name, and that required speaking. He felt a wave of anxiety wash through him as the man looked him up and down -- judging him, probably, asking what his name was and wondering why wasn't he speaking and if hedidn'tsayanythinghe'dthinkhewasstupid---

Nathaniel's thumb popped into his mouth, and he continued to stare, waiting for the nervous feelings to go away.

"That's Nathaniel," someone finally answered. "He doesn't talk."

Karlet tilted his head to one side, eyes not leaving the boy's. "Oh? Why not?"

Another rolled his eyes. "He's never told us."

Karlet chuckled and smiled as he held up a finger. He addressed Nathaniel: "Do you not talk because you can't, or..." He held up a second finger. "... Because you just choose not to?"

Still sucking his thumb, the blond slowly held up two fingers on his other hand.

"Fair enough," the man said, giving Nathaniel's hair a friendly ruffle. "You don't have to talk until you want to."

Nathaniel relaxed slightly under the touch, glad that that was over.

There had been one child at the entrance to the room peeking out into the hallway and acting as a "lookout." He suddenly cried, "GD's comin'!" And all of a sudden, the children started shrieking as they scattered every which way.

"Quick! Hide!" Karlet encouraged them, shooing them away.

Nathaniel panicked and tried to hide behind the couch with a bunch of other boys, but they pushed him out, hissing about how there wasn't enough room. He glanced around, but there were no other places to hide. Except for one.

Thus, he hid behind Karlet, hands clenching in the man's shirt. Karlet said nothing and didn't even look behind him as the Master of the House came lumbering down the hall.

GD looked down at Karlet with a most sour expression, as if trying to figure out who the hell this rodent standing before him was. "What th' hell was all that racket?" he growled.

"'m sorry, sir, that was me," Karlet said, smiling up at him.

"You? Makin' aaaalll that... racket?" GD repeated, spreading his arms wide.

Nathaniel trembled, not daring to look up.

"Yep, that was all me." Karlet's expression didn't change.

GD glared. "Yeh're here a lot, ain't ya?"

"Yep."

"If you like dese lil' bastards so much, why don't you take 'm home?"

"Oh, I'd love to, really, I'd take 'em all home, but I don't think my landlady would approve. She has too many valuable things, you see. And speaking of which, a group of boys downstairs asked me to distract you while they went to go and raid and pillage and plunder the rest of the mansion."

"Oh... oh," GD's alcohol-muddled brain took a moment to process this, and then he was barrelling down the hallway, again, bellowing nonsensical phrases at the top of his lungs.

Karlet stood there a moment, and the boys peeked out of their hiding places.

"Is he gone?" one whispered.

"Yep," Karlet said. The boys started to move until he said, "No, wait! He's coming back!"

Everyone squeaked and went back into hiding.

"Juuuust kidding." Karlet moved toward a couch and Nathaniel went with him, fingers still wrapped in his shirt. Karlet flopped down, and then pulled Nathaniel down next to him. Other boys joined them on the couch or sat on the floor. One even sat on Karlet's shoulders.

This one asked, "Hey, Karlet, if you like us so much, why don't you take us home?"

"Like I said, we've got expensive stuff and we don't want it broken," Karlet replied, pretending to bite the boy's ankle. "Besides, GD's mansion is much cooler than mine. And coming here and playing with you guys is kind of like being a grandparent."

"How so?" someone asked.

He grinned mischevously. "Well, see, I can come here and visit and spoil you all I want, but at the end of the visit, GD's the one that has to deal with you."

"Is that what having grandparents is like?"

"Does that make you an old man?"

"Hey! None of that old man crap!" Karlet huffed. "Fine, then, it's like being an uncle. 'Sides, uncles are usually more likely to be able to crawl around on the floor and stuff and not have their backs break."

"Didya know GD's an uncle?"

"Of course I do."

"Hey, Karlet, you can't take us all home, but why not a few of us?"

"That'd still be difficult." Karlet scratched his head. "How could I choose only a few of you?"

"Take just one, then!"

"That still doesn't help!"

"Take Nathaniel home with you!"

Nathaniel and Karlet both startled at this suggestion. "Why?" Karlet asked, trying to pick out which boy had said that.

The boy who'd made the suggestion sat up. "'Cause, you're the only one he's reacted to, ya know. He gives us all blank stares when we try and ask him questions."

"And his fingers are now a part of your shirt," another pointed out.

The group of boys giggled as Karlet glanced down. Sure enough, Nathaniel's fingers were still wrapped in the edge of his shirt.

Nathaniel's eyes shifted back and forth, and he pried his fingers out of the material before smoothing the wrinkles down. He bowed his head and went back to sucking on his thumb, red-faced as the rest of the boys continued giggling.

Karlet just smiled and patted Nathaniel on the head. "It's been a while since I've brought anyone home, hasn't it?" he said to the others.

"Mal-a-ma-kite's been gone a year~" someone pointed out.

"How do you know Malachite?" Karlet gave the boy a quizzical look.

The boy just grinned. "It's a seeeecret."

The rest of the group giggled somemore, and Karlet just shook his head. "I'll never understand you boys. You're just weird."

"S'why you fit in so well with us!"

"Karlet, You're weird yourself!"

"Karlet, I'm not weeeiirrdd~"

Though they'd barely realized it, Karlet had begun stroking Nathaniel's hair, and the boy was continuing to relax beside him as he did it. It was making him sleepy, and he thought he felt his mother -- his dream-self's mother -- nearby.

Go with him, she seemed to whisper. Go...

"Ready to go?"

Nathaniel snapped out of his trance. The room was empty, save for himself and the Karlet man. He glanced around, and then up at Karlet.

"They all went off to have breakfast," Karlet explained. "Didn't you hear?"

The boy shook his head, feeling embarassed again.

"It's okay. I'm sure we'll find something at my place to eat... if you want to come with me, that is."

Nathaniel stared at him, as if thinking it over. He wondered just how different Karlet's house was from GD's. Maybe it would be less noisy... maybe there would be less people...

Maybe, maybe not.

There was only one way to find out.

"There it is," Adrian said, "your new home."

The Karlet family vehicle made its way down the grand driveway and rolled to a stop outside the front door of the mansion. The spring flowers had long gone by, replaced with plants more suited for the hot summer weather. The front of the house appeared very formal and neat. Unless one walked around on the pathways through the gardens, he would completely miss the "back yard," which contained an outdoor pool, more gardens, and a field of wildflowers that separated the estate from the surrounding woods.

Adrian got out and walked around the car to get the door for his passenger. "I know it's not going to be anything like you're used to," he said, "but I hope you'll like it here."

The passenger in question slipped out of the backseat, white sneakers causing the gravel beneath them to crunch.

He was only a few feet tall, dressed in tattered blue jeans and an old white t-shirt. Judging by his face and the length of his hair, it was difficult to tell that it was a "he." But such was the state of many of the Karlet family members; Adrian felt that he would fit right in.

Though his height and dress wasn't anything remarkable, his best features were his hair and eyes: pale, long, flowing blonde hair that reached his shoulders, and big brown puppy-dog eyes that held a vulnerable look to them. He blinked up at his new guardian uncertainly before popping his thumb into his mouth.

Adrian smiled and pat the lad on the head before pulling out the boy's bag of clothes and posessions. He shouldered the bag and took the boy's free hand as he led him inside.

As they stepped into the front hall, they noticed a murmuring sound coming to their left -- the front room, which was used as a TV room when the families weren't expecting guests. Adrian had let Soco, the house maid, know that he was bringing home a new member of the family, and so the maid had directed everyone into one room and sat them down with a movie until Adrian arrived. This way, Adrian hoped, the introductions would go easier without trying to hunt everyone down.

Adrian left the boy's bag by the door and led him into the room. Everyone looked up at once, and Soco paused the movie they'd been watching intently. The new boy ducked behind Adrian's legs and peered out from around them, thumb still stuck in his mouth.

Most of the Karlet crew were small critters, but there were also several adolescents that were taller than the rest. Two in particular, a tiger girl and a pink-haired boy with dog ears, stared at their guardian and the new comer. They then glanced over at a green-and-blue-and-purple-haired teenager sitting close by.

"I'm feeling an odd sense of deja-vu," the tiger's voice rumbled.

"Same here," the dog-boy replied.

The green-etc.-haired boy just blinked at them.

"Guys," Adrian interrupted, "I'd like to introduce the newest member of our family: Nathaniel."

There was a chorus of "Hi, Nathaniel" all around the room.

"Nathaniel, eh?" the dog-boy said, giving the blonde child a once-over. "That's a big name for such a little runt. Name's Kaleb."

"He's not a runt," the green-haired boy said, getting up from his seat and approaching Nathaniel. "Hi, I'm Malachite. Would you like a hug?"

Nathaniel blinked up at the strangely dressed teenager, started by the sudden question. He shrugged it off and carefully released his fingers from where they were clinging to Adrian's pants. His thumb finally came out of his mouth as he held his arms up to Malachite.

Malachite leaned down and gave the boy a hug. "He's cuuuute," he said to no one in particular, pulling away to play with the long locks for a moment. "And you've got gorgeous hair, too."

Nathaniel just looked away shyly, and his thumb returned to his mouth once the hug was over.

"Hana," the tiger-girl as her introduction. She promptly turned her attention back to the frozen frame on the TV.

"Don't mind her," Kaleb said, "she's a woman of few words."

Everyone nodded in agreement. Hana held her tongue, deciding not to share a few choice words in front of the new kid.

Soco made his way around the couches to bow to Nathaniel. "I'm Soco," he introduced himself. "I'm the maid here. If you need anything, come see me."

"Do you remember ever seeing Soco or Malachite?" Adrian asked. "They used to live at GD's mansion, too."

Nathaniel gave each boy a long look, but shook his head.

"It was a long time ago," Malachite said. "I don't remember anybody from there."

"There were so many kids, it was hard to keep track of them all," Soco added.

"Oh, well," Adrian said, shrugging. "It was just a thought."

The rest of the introductions went smoothly, though Adrian couldn't help but feel there was one missing.

"Wanna come watch the movie with us?" Malachite asked.

Adrian glanced at him. "What about his room?"

"He can see it later!"

Nathaniel glanced at the screen, then at the teenager in front of him. He nodded.

"He doesn't say anything," Kaleb remarked.

"That's part of the deja-vu," Hana said. "Malachite didn't say anything, either."

Mal led Nathaniel by the hand over to an empty chair. "I didn't?"

"Not for a day or so, no," Adrian answered for them.

"Oh... I kind of remember that," Mal said sheepishly. He sat in the chair and pulled Nathaniel into his lap. The boy settled against him as he blinked at the screen.

"I'm gonna take his bag up to his room," Adrian said. "Go ahead and keep watching the movie without me; I'll be down in a minute."

"Okay," came the chorus of voices once more. Everyone's attention turned back to the screen as Soco hit the "Play" button.

That is, everyone except for one curious cat who crawled over to Malachite's chair and peered up at Nathaniel.

Nathaniel stared back at the big, strange-looking feline. He held his hand out to it, and the cat leaned up, accepting the petting.

"Oh, hey, Rayen," Malachite said quietly. He realized that the felinoid had been absent when they'd gone around the room introducing everyone. "Wanna come sit with us?"

The cat nodded, and the teen shifted Nathaniel over so that there was more room. Rayen crawled up into Mal's lap and settled beside Nathaniel who stroked at his face and ears. Rayen purred, smiling softly. Hana rolled her eyes and tried not to watch.

As the movie was finishing, Adrian and Soco conspired in the kitchen and finally set about ordering a liberal amount of Chinese take-out from the local restaurant.

Needless to say, dinner that evening was chaotic. Nathaniel wasn't even phased, and was happy with his meager plate of food before Kaleb challenged everybody to an eating contest. No one else seemed inclined, but in a bold move, Nathaniel raised his hand.

"Oh, Jeesze, you two are going to be sick tonight," Adrian mumbled. "And on his first night home, too!"

Nathaniel shrugged, and he and Kaleb began digging into the beef lo mein.

Seven plates of Chinese food and a bottle of antacids later, Kaleb and Than were stretched out on the couches in the front room, playing video games.

"You may have beaten me at eating, but I've been trained by the best video game player around!" Kaleb boasted.

"Mm," Nathaniel grunted.

"Didn't realize such a little runt could pack away so much food," the teenager continued as he mashed the buttons on his controller. "A little runt with a freakin' big name."

Adrian poked his head into the front room. "Nathaniel?"

"s**t!" Kaleb swore and dropped his controller down on the couch. The TV screen read, "GAME OVER. PLAYER TWO WINS!"

Nathaniel half-smirked, but then glanced up at the man in the doorway.

"Come see your room and let me talk to you a minute."

The blond shrugged and handed his controller over to Kaleb.

Kaleb snapped out of his sulking to grab Nathaniel and give him a noogie, causing the boy to yelp. "I'll get you, next time!" Kaleb vowed.

Nathaniel ducked out of the teen's hold and dashed out of the room, following Adrian up the stairs.

Nathaniel's new room was close to the stairs and had about the same set up as all the other rooms in the eastern wing. It had two windows that faced the back of the house and had a view of the field and the woods beyond. There was a bed, a dresser, and a small desk with a chair. Adrian told him the room next to his was empty, for the time being, but Soco's was the next one over. The guardian told him the basic rules of the house, and that Nathaniel would be able to decorate the room however he wanted to.

"That reminds me," Adrian said. He sat on the edge of Nathaniel's bed and patted the space beside him. "Come sit down for a second."

Nathaniel did as he was told.

Adrian reached under the boy's pillow and pulled out a cnotebook. He handed it to Nathaniel. "This is for you," he said. "You know what a journal is, right?"

Nathaniel nodded.

"Well, that's what this is for. Usually people keep journals to themselves, but I was wondering if you'd consider sharing yours with me. I'd like to get to know you better, but it's going to be hard until you're comfortable with speaking."

"Mm." Nathaniel nodded.

"You can write just about anything you'd like," Adrian continued. "Not much startles me, anymore. But if there's something you don't want me to read, you could just put a little 'x' in the top corner there, and I won't look at the entry. Sound good?"

Nathaniel nodded again.

"Do you mind if I write in your journal? Like, if you ask a question or something, I could write my answer in there."

"Mmhmm." The blond nodded yet again.

"Goodgood." Adrian grinned. "Do you like it here, so far?"

"Mmhmm!"

"Are you dizzy yet from nodding so much?"

"Mmmhmmm~"

Adrian chuckled.

It was the beginning of a new chapter in the lives of Nathaniel and the Karlet family.

I don't know what to say. Drawing dots is fun.

Malachite gave me this book. Everyone else had one, too, so I got one.

.......,,.,.,....,.,.,., More dots.

Adrian's a little bit sad. He gets sad a lot, but I mean he's less sad about things and more sad about Kana Hana and Kaleb being gone and Malachite's getting big and isn't home much. Everyone else is getting big and isn't home much, too. Except me. I'm still littleish. I don't want to get big and grow up but I don't want to be left behind everyone to go away. Kaleb and Hana are gone to school. They come say hi sometimes but it's not the same.

Tristin is fun. He plays with Mal a lot but sometimes he plays with me. He likes doing boy things. Mal and Soco are too girly. Tristin and I wrestle and play in the dirt and the grass.

The new house doesn't have woods but the backyard is nice, too. It's a small house. There's some places to hide. Not as many as the big house, though.

We don't have a lot of visitors anymore. There haven't been any big parties, either. I wonder what happened to the dirty boy from Mal's birthday. I want to play with him again.
