I'm at my cousin's house, and it's been raining for a while. We noticed taht their dog had killed something. We thought it was a rabbit, but then we saw it was a muskrat.

Later, the place where we found it was flooded. We went down there and found some baby muskrats in the water. Four of them were still alive, so I brought them inside.

So now, I'm the unofficial caretaker of four baby muskrats. Advice, anyone?

UPDATE: I'm home and Snuffles, Chewy, Liebchen, and Squeak (Yes, I named them. sweatdrop ) are at the Woodrow Wilson Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. Thanks for your advice guys! biggrin

Well, I see your situation but I have no clue where to begin. What is your main concern? Caring for the muskrats? Since they're babies I'm a little worried. I have something on muskrats I made when I was in fourth grade. I can look at that and get back to you.

You need:

Box- drawers work great
Heatlamp

Young animal formula. If you research muskrats and find that they eat bugs mush some meal worms up very finley and mix it into the formula. Mix mix mix! Vuala!

If you can try and contact a rehabilitator- they have more experiance and they can take them off your hands or you.

I'm going to get them to a rehabilitation center as soon as I can, but I'm at my cousin's house, and they say there aren't any around here.

Even if there were, it's been raining more, meaning the roads are flooded, so I'm stuck.

Thanks for the advice.

And how often do I have to feed them? I've been doing it every two hours.

A hungry baby is a healthy baby. Like other wild rodents feed them only twice a day. evey two hours is over feeding. they may die. @W@.

Oh. eek Thank you!

I must say, I'm pretty intrigued by the KIND of animal you were nursing back to health.. what state do you live in, and is it around marshes or swamps that are a few miles within your neighborhood?
The reason I ask this is because in the south, the muskrat's main habitat is in the marshes and swamp banks, where there's plenty of long grass for them to gnaw on and make their nests from.
See, back when I was a kid, my grandmother on dad's side owned a boat renting warehouse for fishermen that wasright on the edge of the marshlines-since we were family ,she let use use her boats for free, and when we went through the shallow mash-paths, we'd always see muskrats observing use from the muddy grass banks.
LOL, dad told me at one point the ones in her area used to be so bold they'd chase your boat if they thought you were too far into their territory and growl at you. When he was a kid, he said he found that out the hard way.

I was in Pennslyvania when we found them. And my cousins (I was visiting them) have a pretty big pond in their yard.
