Well i agree with a lot of the other people, it all depends on you. If you wanna play bass parts go with the bassoon. If you wanna play melody or harmony parts go with the oboe.
even though i still dont know why you would leave the bass clarinet 0.0 >.>

Lucky you, i think i can help. me and my twin sissy both play double reeds. she plays oboe and i play bassoon, therefore i kidnap her instrument alot and attempt to play it. it is hard. the reed is small and hard to blow thru but the instrument is light and does not require the use of your bottom right thumb. however, when you first start oboe, you will sound like a duck....no offense to oboe players, because bassoon sounds like a drowning turkey at first, but with practice you get better.the bassoon's reed is bigger and easier to blow thru, but the instrument itself is bigger and requires all of your fingers. Naturally i think you should go for bassoon for theses reasons 1-when you learn the chromatic scale, tell your friends to watch your fingers. they will be amazed.(i have done this before) 2-if you happen to be the only bassoon in the school like i have for the past two years, you won't have to worry about sucking at it b/c A-there is no one to challenge you B-the top band director wants every instrument so the assistant can't have it. C-when the director has certain sections play the harmony, melody,or base, he'll call all the instruments he needs. if you are the only one, he'll call you by your name(trust me, ALL of my directors have done that)thus giving you a higher social status b/c everyone knows your name. it works too, not that it should matter.(this is really long...)
Anyways, you should go with wich ever you like because they are both great instruments, and you will have a graet time learning both. I hope that whatever you choose makes you happy.(that sounded oh so corny...sry.)If you have any questions, ask away, i love talking about double reeds.

Being an Oboe player, I gotta say Oboe! It's pretty sweet. Usually in school and camps and other programs, there are either no other or hardly any other Oboe people. So it makes you kinda special. cool Same with Bassoon, I guess... But wouldn't you rather have the Oboe? The instrument that gives you the dying duck sound! Makes lots of people laugh. cool
And some people say they both can be hard. But that's mainly just because of the double reed.
Bassoons are probably harder, since they are so big.

OBOE!!! Also if U have long and curved fingers U should play the oboe becuz the keys R closer 2gether and that is the way U R supposed 2 play: with curved fingers. If you have big choppy fingers then it would be better 2 play the basson becuz the keys are more spread out and harder 2 reach. U have 2 have a good ear 4 music if U want 2 play either of them thogh...there both hard 2 tune.
