i recently went to France and Belgium with school. on the first night, the food we got was revolting(sp). but the vegetarian food was better. still gross (made me puke) but it was better. i was talking to my non-vegetarian mate about this earlier, and just now she randomly said:

omg caz, i realised today, u know that s**t that we had to eat on the first night in the hostel, that ''meat'' .. i think it was horse meat!
i now feel physically sick, as i love horses and go riding frequently, i also work at some stables and go riding with my mate alot. besides that, its meat.
WHY DID SHE HAVE TO GO AND SAY THAT TO ME!?!? she KNOWS how upset i get about things like this, espesh when its about horses. crying stare gonk sad cry
OBVIOUSLY i didnt have this meat..but i still saw what it looked like etc.. and it just made me think "omg..that clump of meat they gave them could of been from a horse.."

Boo hoo. How is a horse any different from a cow, or a rabbit (also a "delicacy" in many places), or a pig, or a chicken, or a frog?

Either you're over-reacting, or the girl isn't much of a friend. Either way, it's not exactly a difficult situation to deal with.

im not saying they are any different, it just upset me because i feel closer to horses than any other animal. she knows how much i care about that kind of thing and she knows how much i love horses. i just got upset how people have turned to eating things like horses aswell as the usual cruelty. no need to be mean about it

Turned to eating horses? It's not a new thing. Horse meat isn't eaten as much as beef (as horsemeat is apparently tougher, and a horse is more useful elsewhere), but people have been eating horsemeat for years and years.

How did you friend even end up with horsemeat? She picked a random thing on the menu, or what?

Yes, I dun care WHAT animal it came from, it's mean, it's meat. Why should I like horses better than cows?

we wernt given a menu, it was just a youth hostel so we just got a set meal, vegetarian or vegan or non-vegetarian.
i just think they should of told us what we were eating, instead of just handing it to us expecting to recognise it instantly. it was just a shock to realise that it could of been, as in England we dont eat it.

My question is how does she know it's horse meat however many days after? Sounds like she pulled that out of her tail, if you ask me.
