Sparring is training. When training you're safe you aren't in an envornment where people are trying to hurt you. Your goal should never be to hurt your partner, but to help each other learn.
at least thats how it should be

Sparring, randori is sport and training low contact fighting to allow training of techiques with little possibility of injury. (class training, point sparring)
Brawling when 2 or more individuals interact with intent of nonserious injuries. (the sparring gone angry/violent, or bully tussling some youth/s, pride fighting)
Sport fighting 2 or more individuals plan on executing their techniques to the full extent withing the confines of rules and regulations of the event, with intent of non grievous harm to the other individual. (boxing, judo, full contact sparring, MMA)
Fighting is when 2 or more individuals act with intent of grevious bodily harm to another individual. Generally not motal intent. (Barfights, street attackers, streetfighting, illegal no rules fighting, here is the one for discussion rape)
Murder / attempted When 1 or more individuals plan on delivering a mortal wound to another individual or individuals. (Robbery gone violent. attempted murder, weaponed attackers, multiple attackers)
Battle same as murder but magnify the amount of people. (Riot, gangfights, war)
The question to ask yourself is what does one have to do with the next and how does it relate to the art in which i practice. If you take a sport art that teaches you rules and stratagies for sparring but doesnt teach actual fighting or self defense your art is Sport. Does sparring teach you how to deliver mortal or maiming techiques? Sparring is a great tool to help you learn to play fight or sport fight with people of a same or similar style within the confines of rules and parameters. Sparring teaches you little about many armed assailents intent on jamming a knife in you while 3 others try to pin you to the ground, or how to stop somone from raping you.

"Sparring" is 'Ok, kids, we're going easy tonight, three rounds, control your head kicks. And try and work on that back-kick technique.'
"Fighting" is 'You came onto my veranda and you kicked my dog! YOU KICKED MY DOG, I'LL KILL YOU, b*****d!!' *insert roundhouse to face*

lol
yeah I'm just gonna skip all the other crap and say this:
Sparring can't really even compare to fighting. The only time it does is when you take off the gear and actually attack while not really killing anyone or breaking limbs. I say that you hit with force, cause thats the only way you're gonna actually learn how to block or avoid attacks. Also do some grappling, but don't go breaking each other's limbs off. Everyone knows that a real fight will probably go to the floor, unless you knock the guy out before that happens. Seriously, you can't learn a whole lot while you're still in your comfort zone (i.e. wearing gear).

Sparring: practice
Fighting: they are trying to hurt me, I will kill them.
Its not rocket science.
