Finding the Princess....

Finding the Princess...
Part ten... happy ending?....

As Keppit peered through the darkness she saw what appeared to be a Waist high toad, covered in warts and scars, with a slight hunch and the most eveil facial expression she had ever seen. But in the eyes of that evil toad, she saw her daughter... "I'm looking for Willamina..."

The toad blinked twice and turned around. Keppit could hear it conversing with itself... but then the darkness answered back and she realized that there was another being standing behind the toad. She tooka step forward in curiousity, trying to see who it was, but the toad turned around again to face Ranald and Keppit. "Willaaaaauuuuumina is not here!" Again the voice was deep and raspy, more a croak in places than actual words. "You do nooooauuuut belong here. Leave!"

But Keppit had different plans... "But I was following a rat... I'm looking for my daughter... she has the same eyes as you..." Keppit had a feeling that this toad knew where Willie was, and she wasn't leaving until she found out what all this was about.

"I am Caaaaaanig! And you are Leaving!" And without warning the vile creature jumped forward and bit Keppit on the shoulder... and the pain was overwhelming. It had been over a year since she had actually felt any pain being a zombie... and as she fell backwards she began to lose consciousness. The last thing she saw as she was fading out was the toad leaping on Ranald...

--------

Keppit groaned and opened her eyes. The lingering feeling of intense pain fading quickly in her mind, as the light invaded her vision... She was on the floor next to her bed, the sheets and blankets a tangled mass between her and the bed. She sighed... "What a nightmare."

"Keppit!" Ranald suddenly sprang up off the sofa where she usually slept. "Keppit you're..." she looked around her. "I had the weiredest dream..." She stood up off the sofa and stretched, rubbing her arm where Keppit had seen the toad bite her... "It was wierd I tell ya." Ranald made her way over to the counter and started rooting through the cupboards.

"Ran..." just checking... "what was your dream about?"

"Your damn frog put you and me in the jungle and then in the dungeon and then attacked us!" she laughed.

"I Had the same dream!" Now Keppit was starting to really get a hold on what had happened. "We must have gotten sucked into one of Willie's dreams!" She paused for thoguht. .. ... ... "And that toad at the end... That... Caaaanig... That was Willie." a sad look overcame her... "Canigi is one of Willamina's names. That means my daughter attacked me in her dreams..." Her mood dropped and she suddenly felt depressed.

Ranald sneered and realised that she felt sorry for Keppit. "And she was talking to that rat... the one that you said would be the bad guy." She sneered harder. "And she bit me!... butthead."

Keppit sat back down on the bed.... her daughter had incredible powers that allowed her to fall into dream-scenes, and that someday would allow her to control the hallucinations of others... and it seemed that Willamina played the bad guy... played the bad guy well. Most children wanted to be the hero...

Keppit sighed and stepped over to the cupboard where she knew Willamina would be sleeping in her shoebox bed... and when she opened the door there she was. Sleeping soundly with a giant toad smile on her face.

Ranald writes::

Ok so no Gus-boy today. I know my auntly duties and I'll be writing for the little toad monster. Yes I called her a monster... you gonnae do sommat about it?

She BITES! She's bitten me no less than four times today, and when I cannae see the little amphibian, all I can hear is the jivvin sprites crying in the distance that they're being attacked... I wish she'd stop. The sprites aren't the smartest bunch.

Oh here's the little monster now... hello monster. I dinnae ken what she wants me to write here and I dinnae ken if she cares either. I cannae wait until I can find out if she understands anything we've been trying to impress on her... little monster.

Gus writes...

Willie wrote in her own journal it looks like, and she used her rainbow coloured pencil. I wasn't here to watch, but maybe someday I'll ask her to read it to me... looks like quite the story.

Ranald Writes::

The frog is lost in her own world. Nothing Gus or I have done has pulled her from it. She's been prancing around the living room all day, and all evening, and I dinnae ken when she's gonnae stop. I cannae wait for Keppit to get back from her damn vacation.

Maybe she can deal with this toad kid.

Iris_virus
-Jolted from your sleep by the collision of a large rubber ball with your head, you find yourself and your velvet in a rather dark, soggy, and cramped place. Certainly not where you went to sleep. Atleast I'd hope not. Upon further inspection it turns out to be a small well, and the tiny bit of light you do have is blotted out suddenly by a head and a rather unpleased cry.- "My ball! My very favorite golden ball!"

-Incapable of getting out yourself, you agree to retrieve the ball in return for help out of the well, and upon reaching the surface are met by looks of amazement, as the flaxen haired maiden points and prods at your 'frogs' rainbow markings.- "A prince, is it a prince!?"

((Since she can make stories, I thought it might be fun to throw her into a story of sorts. XD So welcome to The Frog Prince, only a jacked up version. Willie and one guardian/sibling are there, and you may start from inside the well, or from answering the princess. But she will inform you of the legend, and it'll be up to you to find a 'fine prince' to kiss Willie and grow her. There are many ways to go about getting the kiss, just make sure she uses some of her skills or powers in the process. Upon the kiss she'll grow and you both will be immediately whisked back to the shop. The setting is fairytale/medieval with a little bit of a modern twist if you prefer.))

The toad and the frog prince...

*TWONK*

Keppit groaned as she pulled herself awake, and upright. "Damnit Ranald must you do that every morning?" The room was dark still and Keppit had to put her hands up to her eyes in order to make sure they were open... they were. "Hey, Ran, what happened to the lights?" She knew she wasn't tired enough to have been woken up in the middle of the night... it had to be morning by now...

But.... "Ranald?"

"Croak... Croooooaaaaakkk."

"Ah shite." Keppit braced herself and tried to stand up, but once she put her hands down on what she had thought was the bed, mud squished itself up between her fingers... really muddy mud... really muddy muddy mud. "Willie... is that you?"

"Croooak. Crk."

"of course it's you. Who else would it be?" She sighed and stood up, but once she was on her feet, her weight wasn't spread out enough and she began to sink into the mud. She didn't even think twice about it, she simpkly plonked herself back down into a sitting position where her weight was a little better distributed. It was still pitch black in the hole... "Willie... Willie come over here please." Keppit held her hand out for the toad to find, but a moment later a ball was pushed up into her hand. At least she thoguht it was a ball.

"What's this?" lifting the ball up into the air as if she could see it, Keppit began to feel it. It was indeed just a ball. "Where'd you get this?"

"Croak... Crownk."

"Ahh." Keppit looked up into the pitch darkness as she remembered something hitting her in the head. She had originaly thought that might be Ranald chucking a pillow at her, but this ball was the more likely culprit under the circustances. And as she peered up she saw a sliver of light far above her. Had that been there a moment ago? And as she looked at the sliver it slowly became larger, accompanied by the grunting of someone. Keppit realized, suddenly startled that there must be a lid up there that someone was trying to open. She put her hands out in either direction and encountered a rould wall that seemed to travel all around her in a short circle. The hole was becoming slightly more illuminated now and she managed to catch a glimpse of the small toad at her feet. She scowled down at her daughter. "we're in a well."

"Crrrrrrooak." Willie nodded.

"Your doing?"

"Crooooak." Willie shook her head.

"Great. Just great." Keppit sighed... "Now how are..."

But she was interupted by a voice high above... a girl's voice. "My ball! My very favorite golden ball!". The sentaces were well practiced, but not very convinceing. Almost as if the girl had been memerizing lines for a play.

keppit sighed again and looked up at the light. "I got it." then she glanced down at the toad. "I suppose this is how we get out?"

The toad and the frog prince...

"You've got my ball?" The voice was girly and high pitched, but somehow had very little feminimity to it. "will you give it to me?"

Keppit sighed again and decided to give into whatever this was. "Sure. But I cannae throw that high. You'll have to find someway to get me out." She glanced down at Willie. "If I find out this is your doing young lady you will be oh-so-grounded."

"Are you a frog?" The voice called down. Keppit tried to see who it was, but all she was getting was a curly-headed sillouette at the top of the well.

"I'm not." She wasn't quite sure how her being or not being a frog had any relevancy to the situation, but she figured the question was easy enough to answer.

"Do you see a frog?"

"Um... No?" Keppit responded and Willie croaked her protest. Keppit glared down at her daughter. "I don't care what Ranald says... you're not a frog. You're a toad." Willie croaked again in response. "Fine." Keppit turned her attention back to the top of the well and offered back up, "But I do have a toad here with me." she glanced back down at Willie and shrugged.

"Toad will do. Here..." A vine came tumbling down through the opening, hitting Keppit in the head. "climb up this and I'll see you at the top."

Keppit scooped Willie up and put her in a pocket of the long black nightgown she was wearing. "C'mon kiddo. Let's go meet out rescuer... or maybe she's out assailant." The thought made the zombie woman laugh to herself, as she half climbed/was half pulled out of the well.

The toad and the frog prince...

When Keppit finally scrambled to the top, with the small Toad girl in her nightgown pocket, she was greeted expectantly by a girl dressed in over the top princess garb. She wasn't homely by any means, but she really wasn't pretty either. Keppit supposed that it was, in part, the gaudy pink film draping down from the girl's overly pointed cone hat (also pink). In fact, Keppit found herself thinking that if it weren't for all the pink from the girl's head to the girl's toes, that she might be quite pretty.

"Well?" The girl just stared at Keppit. She didn't seem surprised that there was a zombie woman standing in front of her.

"Well what?"

"Well... where's your toad?" The girl looked about ready to stamp her foot in irritation, but Keppit reached into her pocket and gently lifted out Willie, making the girl's eyes go wide with wonder. "It's got rainbow legs.... is he a prince?" the girl snatched Willie from Keppit's grasp and recieved an ill-tempered croak from the Toad in response.

"HER name is Wille." Just having her daughter snatched out of her hand had made Keppit slightly angry.

"Oh." Suddenly dissapointed, the girl pushed her pink veil out of her face and began to poke at Willie's legs. "Can't be a girl toad and be a prince in disguise I guess. Were there any other Toads down there?" She seemed hopeful.

"No. And mind that you don't hurt her, please." Keppit wanted very much to take Willie back, but she really didn't want to hurt the Toad by snatching her around.

"Why's she got a boy's name?" still poking at Willie, the girl ignored the poor toad's croaks of protest.

"It's her nickname. Was given to her by a friend. He real name's Annastasia Rashanine Willamine Canigi the 1st, Princess of TinsleyLoch." Keppit sighed... it was a stupid name, but Willie really liked it. In fact, the small Toad puffed up her chest when she heard her mother spaek it.

"She's a Princess!?!"

Sigh. "In a manner of speaking."

"I'm a princess!" The girl said it like it wasn't an obvious thing that she was wearing outrageous princess garb. "Well... I will be a princess soon." She lifted her skirt and little, out of the way and began inspecting the ground around her feet. "Speaking of which have you seen that Golden ball around here anywhere? You brought it up right?"

"Crrrroak... croak roak ruuuuaooook?"

"What do you mean how? It's simple really. It's all a matter of geoliterary-plot arithmatic." The girl replied as if Willie had asked a question in English, and to Keppit's surprise Willie seemed satified with the Girl's answer. In fact the small Toad even asked another question...

"Crooak... Croak craok rukruk riiiiiib?" And Keppit found herself watching in fascination as her daugher had a real conversation with someone who, it seemed, understood her perfectly.

"Ug. Don't be silly. Prince + Princess + Kiss = true love, since Frogs and Prince's are always mathmatical equals to each other, Substituting Frong in the place of Prince makes an equally true statement. Ergo, Frog Prince, though redundant, is also a possiblity for true love.... with me so far?" willie shook her head, and the sudo-princess went on. "The story of the Frog prince says that when a prince is bad, he turns into a Frog. And the only way for the Prince to re-atain his Princelyness, he must be kissed in his frog state by a thankful beauty. In this case, I'm hoping to find a frog prince and kiss him. Of course I'm a thankful beauty becuase in return for my giving him back his humanity, he'll be so thankful that he'll propose to me right on the spot. And everybody knows that when you marry a Prince, you become a Princess." She nodded her head. It all made perfect sense to her... and to Willie it seemed. But to Keppit it had all been a load of gibberish.

"Crooak , reee, roak roak Riiibt croak."

"Say now, that's not a bad idea. And it's certainly an interesting theory in the least. You'll have to let me know how it turns out." She smiled down on Willie and handed her back to Keppit.

Keppit just stared blankly for a second. She gazed down at the little toad, smiling up at her from her zombie hand and realized that she had to ask. "What did she say?"

"Huh? Oh. She says that she's the Frog Princess and that this is her story. She needs to find a thankful Prince to kiss her and make her human. It shouldn't be too hard, really, there's Princes all over the place. But if might be difficult trying to get one to Kiss a toad. They're a rather picky breed, these Princes."

"oh." Keppit looked down a Willie. "I suppose I have to do this to stop whatever this..." She motioned around them at the meadow they were standing in... "Is."

Willie simly nodded and hopped up to Keppit's shoulder.

"Well miss, where do we find a Prince?" The zombie woman gave in.

"Huh? Oh over there by the jousting run. They hand out there a lot."

"Thanks." And with that Keppit the zombie and her toad daughter turned and began their trek to find a prince.

The toad and the frog prince...

Keppit and Willie wandered trough the woodlands for at least a half an hour before they finally came across what must be the jousting commons. Keppit sighed to herself as she saw no less than twenty young men sitting around in the grassy areas. They all looked so pompous that they surely must be princes. "What do you think Willie? Shall we go and see what we can do about your Toad Princess Story?"

Willie nodded, and so Keppit stepped forward to the closest of the bunches. She wasn't quite sure what she was supposed to say to these princes, but as it turned out, she didn't have to. The nearest prince jumped to his feet. He was moderately tall with good handsome looks (he'd be quite the heartthrob if his hair wasn't in the typical bangs and bob format that storybook princes always seemed to wear), He was eating an apple as he gracefully stepped a circle around Keppit and Willie... examining them almost.

"Let me guess..." his voice was lyrical and well practiced. "You're son has been turned into a frog there for some haenous crime against morality. And now you've come looking for advice on how to get a princess to kiss him in his frogly state."

"Actually" Keppit was finding this whole situation rather strange. "This is my daughter, and as far as I can remember she's always been a toad. She's hoping to find a prince to kiss her and see if she turns into a human."

"Ah." He didn't seem shocked... but then again, he was a little too calm and cool and collected to seem shocked at anything it seemed. Keppit found herself longing to try and shock the boy.... tell him he had dirt on his face or that his hair was on fire... but he spoke again first. "That explains the rainbow legs. I thought they were rather strange for a Frog Prince."

"Right. Um... so will you kiss her for me?" Keppit seemed hopeful that this adventure would be over with as soon as possible.

"No way! I'm not kissing any Toad. Besides, even if she is a Princess under all that she's bound to be somewhat affected by the change from Toad to Human. Take Robert for example. He used to be a very good looking young man, but now that he's been frogged and un-frogged six times..." then one of the younger princes in the background chirped up, saying something to the effect of 'it's seven now jordan, I know it' ... "Scuse me, seven times, he's got all these natural warts and bumps and whatnots all over him. You can't be a frog and not get warts after your princess kisses you."

"so..." Keppit STILL didn't understand this story stuff...

"So, nobody here is going to kiss your daughter." Stated matter of factly.

"How about this Robert... where is he? He's still a prince right?" Grasping at straws..

"Yeah he's a prince, but I haven't seen him for several days." Then the younger prince chirped up again in the background, 'Jordan, he's out at the death cliffs of Dover' ... "Ah. Apparently he's at the Death Cliffs of Dover." ...

"The Death cliffs of Dover?" Keppit sighed. "Where are they?"

"Well they're right there. Don't be stupid." Keppit turned around to where Jordan was pointing and sure enough there was a large cliff face jutting up from the trees.... couldn't be more than an hours walk away.

"gee thanks." Keppit turned to Willie and shook her head. "You're lucky I love you so much."

Willie just grinned back in response.

The toad and the frog prince...

Over an hour later Keppit and Willie were standing at the base of a cliff much too steep for Keppit to walk or even climb up. "Well kiddo, this seems to be the end of our story. I dinnae see a prince around here anywhere."

Willie just pointed up from Keppit's shoulder at the rock face.

"What? No, we don't even know if he's up there. Besides, I cannae get up there at all. Look at it."

The little toad leapt from Keppit's shoulder on to a very small ledge that was eye level with the zombie woman, and again she pointed up at the cliff face. This time the point was a little more urgent though and Keppit made an effort to see what Willie was pointing at. At first she didn't see anything but after a moment she began to discern a figure sitting 20 feet up on a ledge.

The boy's face was dirty and covered in warts, and his hair was stringy brown. Keppit couldn't tell if the greasy mats in his hair were natural or if the boy had simply given up all hope in his appearance. "Hello? Hello there, I'm... we'll... we're looking for Robert..."

"Don't you mean Ribbet?" The boy's voice was scratchy and hollow.

"Croak."

"Well, actually, we were told that the prince we were looking for was named Robert. Are you Robert?"

"Ribbet, Robert, what's the difference. She dumped me no more than two minutes after she kissed me. I don't think she liked her frog prince. I don't think any of them ever did." He sighed and picked absently at the cliff face beside him. "I mean, would you? If you were a princess or a lovely young lady, and you were to kiss a frog in hopes of rescuing a handsome prince and then I showed up... poof! Face it. You'd dump me too."

"Um." Keppit glanced down at her nightdress. "I'm not the kind of person who judges others on their looks, kid." How could she? She was a member of the walking undead.

"Croaaak." And neither could of would Willie... she had a gift for seeing well past the initial outer coverings of people, animals, things and even places. The kid had a knack for imagination.

"You... you think?" He sounded hopeful for a moment, but the feeling faded as quickly as it had appeared. "You're just trying to trick me down. Probably to make fun of me or hurt me. Just go away." And he turned his back on them, letting himself face the wall.

Keppit groaned to herself. What an obnoxious kid this Robetrt was. She turned to pick Willie back up, but the toad princess was already several feet above Keppit's head, having hopped from small ledge to small ledge... inching her way higher.

"WILLIE!" This worried Keppit. "come down here! You'll hurt yourself! C'mon." But Willie hopped higher and higher without pause. ... then she came to a larger gap between two ledges and she paused.

The toad and the frog prince...

The gap was more than a couple of feet wide and both ledges were small enough that you'd have to have pretty good aim in a leap. Willie's doubts pressed in on her as she assessed the gap. Down below her she could her Keppit pleading with her to come down, but somehow Willie knew that she could make this gap.... she crouched down as low as she could get, bunched every muscle in her little toad legs... and she sprung...

and she missed.

Willie felt herself miss the ledge completely, both in aim and in depth. As she fell she heard Keppit scream and saw, almost in slow motion, Robert turn and watch. In a stroke of good luck she didn't fall far, but back down onto a ledge she'd already traveresed. Like a true adventuring trooper, Willie picked herself up, dusted off her pride and started back up the ledges until she made her way back to the large gap.

Once again she could hear Keppit down below, pleading with her, asking her not to try the leap againg. Somehow Willie knew that she COULD make this jump.

So she closed her eyes, and changed her world. She imagined herself bigger, and stronger... she imagined the ledge wider and more supportive... she imagined Robert up above to be in some kind of peril danger, in desperate need of her adveturer princess skills... and then she opened her eyes and saw what all that she had imagined in real life. Her wolrd had changed. Robert was as handsome a prince as you could ever imagine, she was as strong and brave an adventurer princess as ever there was... and as she stared into the abyss that had once been the gap, she saw an angry dragon shark pacing back and forth below her, waiting for her to fall... she wouldn't fall... she couldn't fall.

So she craouched down as far as she could, and she bunched every muscle in her now stonger and bigger legs, and then she gave a short battle cry, (something to the effect of believing is seeing, only in Toad) and she sprung.

The leap was good and she landed partially on the ledge on the far side. It was a little bit of a scramble, but she was able to pull herself up onto the ledge. And then from there it was only a few simple hops to where her prince was waiting.

At Robert's ledge, he reached out and scooped Willie up into his hands. "You... you did that.... that was amazing. How?"

As Willie gazed up into his face she thought he was the most handsome prince she had ever seen. She wasn't sure how to convery her needs, but Keppit suddenly found her voice and called up the cliff.

"Robert! The toad you hold in your hand is Annastasia Rashanine Willamine Canigi the 1st... my daughter... princess of TinsleyLoch..."

"Ppp...ppp... Princess? A Toad Princess?" He stammered. Obviously the concept was difficult for him. So Keppit helped him out.

"She needs a kiss to finish her story. No other prince would kiss a toad... will you?"

"I don't.... I might turn into a toad."

"Crrrroak."

He stared down at Willamine for a second before nodding slowly... "You're right. Being a frog was never that bad. People don't expect all that much from you... and come to think of it, I WAS happier that way... Princess..." He smiled at her. "You're the lovliest princess I ever have seen... and once of teh bravest. It would be an honor... my honor, to kiss you and restore your humanity to you..."

"Crooooak."

"Always." And he picked her up further in his hands, gently laying his pursed lips against Willie's wide toad lips.
