Even before the words were first uttered by Uncle Ben, there was a sort of cosmic sense that Superheroes weighed in to fight the forces of evil because it was their duty. They were given gifts, and those gifts should be used to better the lives of the majority of the planet. Personal sacrifices, long nights, hardly any social lives, are all shouldered by them because they are expected to. But do they really have the responsibility? Whenever Superman disappears people start talking about 'abandon' this, and 'left us' that, but people oft times lose sight of the fact that he doesn't need to do anything. He isn't even related to us. He could move himself and his family to a planet with a red sun, and live a perfectly normal life. So points for discussion: Do superheroes, or even normal heroes, truly have a responsibility to the world? Can heroes escape from the archetypal cages they have been thrust into? Is there any graceful way to decline such a life? What would you do if given the power to help others beyond those of normal people?

i see that taking such a burden and calling it your responsibility is egotistical and possibly obsessive compulsive. people on the other hand are lazy and when someone such as Superman is out as a symbol they come to depend on him but are also as fickle as to blame said symbol when it doesn't live up to their standards or something goes wrong.
as a flawed person if i were given that type of power i would do quite the opposite, growing up lower class i know i would cave in to greed and corruption, with the selfish thought of making my own life better.

If I had great power? I don't know. I'd feel the occasional obligation to help, but I'd also go out of my way to profit from my abilities.
