Aini and Catta watched with rounded eyes as Sayuri opened the boxes she had bought out from storage. Sayuri was glad that both girls had grown before Christmas rolled around so that they could both appreciate it. She unpacked the artificial tree, should would have gotten a real one but was worried about either of the girls gnawing, or eating the needles and she wasnt sure if that would be poisonous to them so she erred on the side of caution and bought a fake one. Aini played inside the box, peering over the edge and watching as Sayuri put the plastic legs into the slots on the bottom section of the tree and stood it up, whilst Catta wriggled about, eager to climb this strange tree that needed assembling!
'Ok,' Sayuri said as she pulled the branches down, arranging them so they were spread out properly.
'So I put the top half on, and then you can help put the decorations on ok?'
Catta clapped her hands, going over to one of the other boxes and opening, just managing to peer inside. What was that rustly stuff that looked glittery? She pulled out the long stuff and giggled, brushing it against the fur on her face. It felt tickly and she turned to Sayuri as Aini fell out of the Christmas tree box in her eagerness to see what Catta had.
'Wat?' Catta showed it to Sayuri.
'That's tinsel, we can drape it on the tree,' Sayuri looked over as she slotted the top part of the tree into place, and arranged the branches again. Aini tugged another strand out of the decoration box and draped it around herself, parading up and down. Sayuri giggled.
'So I'll be sticking you both on the tree as well then,' she went after them with open arms, and the toddlers ran off in different directions, giggling and squealing as they went.
'Gotcha!' Sayuri exclaimed as she picked up the wriggling lemur pooka. Catta gave Sayuri a smoochy kiss and wriggled out of her arms, leaving the tinsel around Sayuri's shoulders;
'And you,' Sayuri grabbed Aini, untangling the tinsel from the fennec's tail. Aini let forth a disgruntled yip and Sayuri deposited her on the sofa.
'You stay there now madam,' she looked around for Catta, then noticed that the tree was shaking.
'Now then,' Sayuri said, smiling.
'Either there is some special black and white tinsel on our Christmas tree or I spy a Catta in there.'
She peeked in between the branches, and Catta jumped out. Sayuri caught her and plonked her next to Aini.
'Now both of you sit there quietly whilst I decorate the tree and you can have two christmas cookies afterwards.'
The sound of the word 'cookies' was akin to a magic word, as both sat good as gold whilst Sayuri draped lights and tinsel, then hung baubles and figures. Lastly she placed a glittery golden star on the very top, and stood back.
'Shall I switch the lights on now then?' she looked at Catta and Aini who had awed expressions stamped on their little faces.
'Ites!' called Aini, bouncing on the cushion. Catta echoed the sentiment;
'Ights!'
'Okay then,' Sayuri plugged the lights in and then came on, twinkling in amongst the branches and decorations.
'Ayy!' yelled both girls.
'I'll just put the boxes away again, then we can sit down with cookies.'
'It 'vee time?' asked Catta, tugging on the bottom of Sayuri's kimono after sliding off the sofa. Aini was still bouncing on the seat, watching the lights.
'Yes we can watch something on TV,' Sayuri moved off with the boxes, and Catta scrambled back onto the sofa. There was squabbles for a moment as Aini and Catta fought over which sofa cushion to sit on, but they were all quiet when Sayuri re-entered with a tray with 3 plates and 3 glasses on it. She sat down in between them, sliding the tray onto the table in front of the sofa and handed them each a plate. Both had two iced cookies on, in the shape of a christmas tree. They had glasses of fresh orange juice as well, as neither of them particularly liked milk, and so she could only get them to drink a small glass in the morning.
Sayuri picked up the tv remote, flicking it on and searching through the channels. Eventually she found a cartoon version of 'The Christmas Carol' and she settled down to watch that, both Catta and Aini sliding over to rest on her as they nibbled their cookies. Eventually all three had fallen into a light sleep, as the TV talked to itself..

'Get down from there!' Sayuri yelled up into the tree, having finally located Catta. Aini was inside, occupied by crayons and a big ream of paper, and Sayuri had been making lunch. That was made and now she had sought out the other adopted child of hers. She had called, and called, and then went around looking. First in the house and then finally outside. Again she had called Catta's name but the lemur pooka toddler had not answered. Now she was annoyed, and listened for a while as she walked slowly around the garden. At length she heard the leaves of a tree above her rustling; too much of a noise to be a bird.
She narrowed her eyes, tone sharpening as she shouted again, adding Catta's name. A striped tail lowers from the branches and then a head followed as the girl peered out from the greenery.
'Why?'
'Because its lunchtime. I told you as well that you were not allowed to climb trees unsupervised!'
Sayuri walked away, and Catta sniffled pitifully, her tail clutched in her hands. She knew she would be most likely confined to her room for climbing trees again, but she did like it so, and Aini couldnt do it as well as she could so she could escape from the fennec girl. She blinked away tears as Sayuri came marching back, a small metal step ladder in hand. Unfolding it and placing it at the base of the tree, she gingerly climbed up, reaching out and motioning. Catta leapt, and Sayuri caught her.
's'orry,' she sniffled, tucking herself into the crook of Sayuri's neck.
'You know I dont shout at you to be mean, but you know you shouldnt be up there when I am not around. You snuck out again, you shouldnt have even been outside.'
Sayuri sighed, rolling her eyes and trying not to smile as Catta said sorry again in her little lost voice.
'Well I will hope that you wont do it again. Its time for lunch anyway.' Sayuri walked into the house carrying Catta. She would retrieve the ladder later.

'Stoppit!'
'No you stoppit!'

Sayuri rubbed her temples, as she paused for about the tenth time that past hour.
