Another reason:
((I'm Buddhist. The branch predominantly in Thailand, I think the English translation is Tha`lrla ya-naak.))
"Don't eat meat. That's sin in MY religion. Don't eat meat, okay? It's bad because my religion says so. ((Only okay in life-or-death or politeness situations.))
Don't drink dairy. The conditions that cows are raised in are horrible and you are contributing to hurting innocent animals. Chickens suffer in those factory farms. You may not hurt, even indirectly or passively. Don't consume dairy. ((Includes cheese, whey, milk, eggs, even in small bits in like vitamins, chocolate, etc.))
Don't buy expensive clothes. That's excess in MY religion. That's bad too. No purses, no $12398093842390 shoes. That's bad.
Don't hurt animals. That's sin in MY religion, it's a natural law of humans. Don't even kill bugs purposefully.
Don't hate or obsess. That's sin in MY religion. Hate is unfounded, and you may not discriminate against another, even if they have different beliefs, different skin color, and different religions than you."
NOTE: Many find those ideals CRAZY and everything. Next time someone pulls it on me, I'll swing this out and them and say, "Well, in MY religion, --insert here--, so you must do that too."

Question on the dairy bit: If a farmer had his cows and got his milk from them, and made sure to take good care of his cows, would it be okay to drink that milk?

If this will help, Pope Clement X pronounced that a fetus is not a human until 20 days after conception in 1673. eek

Does anyone know which biblical verse it is that the Pro-Lifers use to "justify" (sarcastic quote marks) making abortion illegal? I'm writing an essay and have a paragraph on religion and would like to use it.

I'm writing an essay and have a paragraph on religion and would like to use it. You might see the "Why Abortion Is Biblical" page posted by PhaedraMcSpiffy, they mention there one of the passages and talk about it. Though you have most likely already solved this because your post is from April 18th. Will you let us know how it went with your essay? smile PhaedraMcSpiffy - thanks for the links. It was interesting reading. I am possibly a rather rare kind, a Christian who believes that abortion should be legal. But I'm not always sure how to justify it to my Christian friends if it ever comes to a subject of talk, so this was useful to read for me.

I'm Jewish, and I do try (okay, I'm planning on it when I graduate college) to follow some of those Levitical laws the conservative Christians so blithely ignore. Like, I dunno, not eating pork, and not cooking a calf in it's mother's milk (not mixing milk and meat), or not eating shellfish. And that's just the tip of the dietary laws. Then there's the stuff I don't follow but I know people who do, such as fringes on the garments, and even some people who don't mix kinds of fabrics in their clothes, at least not plant fibers with animal. Hmm... then there are the modesty laws, though I'm not 100% sure are biblical, as well as men and women not touching unless they're married. (Oh, the expression on people's faces when they run into THAT the first time. Never will follow it myself, but I know people who do)
Basically, I know my religion has tenants no other religion follows... so I'm not gonna try forcing it on other people.
I love my Judaism... but, it's mine. Even among all the other Jews, my Judaism is my own. I've got my religion. Keep yours.

If one person follows a religion, they should not force it on other people and they especially shouldn't try to make laws around it. I am a Catholic. While I am politically pro-choice, I myself would probably never have an abortion. But I do not believe I should force that belief on other people, and we shouldn't have a law forcing that belief, so that is why I am pro-choice.
