I wanna be a GOOD whm, and be USEFUL in a party. What makes a good WHM?

My stats:

Server: Cerberus
Race: Mithra
Class: WHM

Well, my whm's at 37, so I'm not a whm god, but I can tell you what works best for me.

1. As you start out, and you party with other people, stay as far away from the action as possible while still being able to Cure your party members.
2. Set Macros for Curing. Remember to use your F1-F6 keys to target your party members and set the Macro to Cure .
3. Don't burn your 2-hour unless your tank knows you're going to do it and can keep the focused on him/her. Otherwise you'll heal whoever's left alive in your party, but you've guaranteed your own death.
4. (Kind of a duh) Watch and ration your MP.
5. Always make sure the party's buffed with whatever you can give them (anything relevant to what and where you're fighting, anyway).

And get used to staring at your party's HP/MP bars. That's where your attention needs to stay continually, so try not to get caught up in the actual fighting, cause you might end up missing someone who needs a cure!

These are just basics, but anyone's welcome to add their own opinions!

Ok first welcome. Next some tips.

1: Race.
-Human: Well rounded. Ok mp and ok hp. 2ed best mind. Good for mixing sub jobs.
-Galka: + Good Hp and vit and mind. - Bad mp.
-Taru: + Great mp and blm sub. - Low mind and hp/ vit (If you get hit you will die fast)
-Mithra: + Ok hp and mp, great agility. - Low Mind and vit.
-Evaan: + Good Hp and vit. Great mind. - Kinda low mp and int(for blm sub)

2: Sub's
Smn: Higher mp, a little more int and smn's. Lower hp and vit.(good for galkas and evaan)
Blm: Little higher mp and int. Some black magic. A bit less hp and vit but more agility. (good for taru's and Mithra's)

3. Soloing
-Whm's soloing life I think should last no more then the first 11 levels. Go for the weeker monsters(Worms or pugals or little bee's so on). Healing is your greatest weapon, but use your cure to heal just the right amount of hp as not to use up your mp. Heal after the monster no after your hit. Start the fight with Dia or some De-buffing spell. Dont Save your 2 hour, if your going to die but have no mp and the monster has just a bit more hp then you use your 2 hour its going to come back after all.

4. Level 11 and party time
-By this level you will be soloing around the two main party spots. As a whm you will be hunted down to join so do it. Level 11 meens one thing Cure 2. Note Cure takes 24 mp and gets you lots of hate at this level you should only use if your tank was just hit really hard to red hp.

5. Dunes or Peninsula
- Party leveling from 10(some times 9)-20 is mostly done in these two places. Where you do it is up to you. This is where you get your 3 items for your sub job quest.

6. Your roll
-As should as the party is all there you should Buff, cast Protecta or bar_____(what ever you will be fighting, Barfira for gobs and Barwatera for pugs so on) and shell.
-When the battle is stating wait for the tank to provoke and take a hit then cure, keep cureing only what you need to, and save your cureing for the takes the red mage or black mage dont need too much unless are being aggroed.
-After the battle ask if anyone in poisoned and cure them with poisona(a must have -Level 8- ) and re-buff if needed. Tell your party your mp before the puller gets somthing if its low they will wait.

7. Subing whm
-After you get your sub job its time to lev a new job. Whm can be one of the best things to sub next to war.
Blm, smn, brd, bst, rdm - All use whm sub and in some ways its the only one(not blm and rdm)
War and pld - Subing whm on one of these makes for a good soloer.

Ok I think that can help a bit, if you need to know more just tell me. Oh and theres lots of whm's, brd's and bst a rare.

Not bad strats.

Make sure to pay attention to how much hate from the enemy you have. Always stay two steps ahead of the game so you have that little bit of hate resistance for an emergancy spell.

After level 41, make sure the redmage refreshes you CONSTANTLY.

After 51, look for tank combos. PLDs will be able to cover healing for a little while, giving you time to switch to your darkstaff and replenish some MP during the fight. Also, after ninjas get Utsusemi Ni, look for a NIN and a THF combo. Sneak Attack plus Trick Attack on a Ninja will give him the hate he needs. Ninjas limit healing a lot.

Make sure to save up for the spell Erase early. It is essential.

Remember that BRDs and RDMs are your best friend with MP!

I am a lvl 41 White Mage on the Phoenix server, I would have to agree that after a RDM Hits 41 there is no alternative for getting a bit extra mp. I do not party with anyone unless there is a RDM or Bard, because I am very picky. I want to be able to heal everyone and get mp back in the meantime. 3nodding

Something that worked for me up until Cure became pretty much obsolete...

Setting individual macros for party members. Using through

= Yourself
= Second slot on Party list
= Third slot on Party list
= Fourth Slot
= Fifth Slot
= Sixth Slot

Then your first five macros become:

Ctrl+2 = /ma Cure
Ctrl+3 = /ma Cure

And so on. The reason I told you to start with Ctrl+2 is because you don't want to become accustomed to thinking Number One is always the second on your list. Later, you don't want to be thinking F1 = Same as Ctrl+1.

Was that too confusing? o.o;;;

I use a PS2, so selecting targets in a PT is super easy... Just use the up and down buttons on the D-Pad to scroll. xd

Usually I just make a Macro stating my MP and who I am curing. With PS2, I don't have to even think about hitting the macro... The R and L buttons can be used to select macros.

The easest way i have found for pc is making my macro the /equip helps alot so i dont have to mess around with changing from my wind staff for haste to ice staff for barblizzard or light staff for healing you can make a healing macro for darkstaff /equip Main "Dark Staff" then /heal

/equip Main "Light Staff"
/ma "Cure V"

then using F1-F6 to select any party member
and if you are in an alliance with many people you can type
/target name here
