He can't sing, but he's special needs, so he's in the choir.

I've been having this problem with this boy in the Symphonic Choir at my school. Firstly, he cannot sing for the life of him. He sings tenor with me, but the only time he sings the right notes is when he bumps up to soprano, and there his voice is scratchy and unnapealling. But, the teacher let him in because he's got a mental disability, and "this would be a good oppourtunity for him". Well, what about the rest of the group? I know this sounds mean, but I really feel like he's bringing the rest of the group down.

Also, the boy is obscessed with me. He always tries to sit next to me, and whenever anyone doesn't have a copy of the music, he'll be the first to offer them his so he can look on with me. I ONCE FELT HIS BREATHE ON MY FACE!! gonk

Anyway, what do you think I should do?

If your choir is a nonauditioned group, there's really not much you can do about him being in it. A teacher's job is to provide an education to everyone, and mainstreaming special needs kids is popular now, especially in "non-academic" classes like music or PE. While he may not be the greatest singer, his experience in music class could very well be the highlight of his day. Why deny enjoyment of music to anyone, especially to someone for whom school may be the hardest work he's ever done, and will never be easy or enjoyable?

As to your personal issues, there are a few options. You can talk to your teacher and ask for different seating. You can talk to him directly (but nicely). You can also indirectly let him know you don't enjoy his attention by never paying attention to him, minding your personal space, and whatever else you can think of to be tactful.

Hope that helps. smile

Does your choir have a audition choir you can go out for? Usually all the creepy people stay out of there. My school has Five choirs, Two non-audition and three audition.
Plus it would be great for you to Try out ^_^.

As for the guy. Shun him twisted
Talk to the teacher about it. Usally they'll understand.

...It IS an audition group. We have three select groups, and this is a hard group to get into.

I'm in all the select groups. He also sits in on Madrigals when he's got study halls.

We have a kid like that in the middle school choir (i'm in high school), but he's a sweet heart and we don't really mind. We've always had challenged kids in choir, but their only in non-audition choirs. I really don't know what to tell you if your teacher allowed him into an audition choir. But try to be nice to him and maybe sit somewhere where you have a person on either side of you.

Yeah, I have the same problem. The only thing you can do is wait it out, and talk to the teacher. Or, you could switch and sing alto.
