As I am sure most of you know, Danny went and spent (correct me if I'm wrong, here) a year in Africa instead of going to College. He doesn't talk much about it, but he has told numerous amusing stories about it.
Discuss: -Amusing stories -How do you think this trip affected his music? -If you could go spend a year on your own, in Africa instead of a formal college education, would you? -Anything else slightly related.

The only one I really feel comfortable about, being my own opinion, is bullet three.
If you could go spend a year on your own, in Africa instead of a formal college education, would you? No. Just- no. sweatdrop

I always feel horrible (but at the same time, very happy) for Danny when the subject of Africa comes up, because of the fact that he contracted malaria while down there. crying Danny-Quote: "It feels like you're going to die, but you don't." Poor guy. D'y'think that the malaria messed up his head some? haha. Maybe that's indirectly how all this Boingo came about... rolleyes
On the contrary, if not for his little Tour de Africa, he would've never discovered some instruments and different music styles - therefore, not influencing his distinct style now.
Yay! and Boo! Africa!

I think Danny's trip really made an impact on him musically, and frankly the malaria was worth it. No pain, no gain, right? As for going to Africa for a year instead of formal education: hell yes. I don't wanna go to college. Don't need to but the parents are making me. I WANNA GET OUT THERE AND LIVE DAMMIT!

I agree, there's no way the trip to Africa did not influence his writing style. You can sense a slight African beat in many of his songs. As for going to Africa for one year, instead of a formal college education... Probebly not instead of. I mean, if you're an amazing genius like Danny, you don't need any education to become a master of the musical art. Myself, on the other hand, I need the help from teacher's to learn it. Though, it would deffinately be interesting to go to places like Africa, and study the culture, and the way music is incorporated in their lives. Especially in Africa. I don't think I would do it instead of college, though.

If by some crazy opportunity I were offered the chance to go to Africa (or any other foreign/ non-midwestern place for that matter) I would totally take it instead of college. But... I don't think that's gonna happen. gonk

I need college, mostly for the same reason I need to take lessons for any instruments I want to learn. The lessons give me the motivation and the push. Otherwise I'd just sit here on my a**, typing on the computer all day. I need deadlines...loose, flexible deadlines.

-How do you think this trip affected his music? Before I knew he had gone to Africa, I wondered why so much percussion, not just in the band but in compositions. I love that sound, it really makes him unique as a composer, I just wondered where it came from. I remember learing about how in places like Africa music was developed with more tones and notes not in 'traditional' music which could account for alot of interesting sounds I hear in his stuff. Then, when I was listening to his Planet of the Apes soundtrack and thinking, 'he's probably wanted to do something like this for a long time'
-If you could go spend a year on your own, in Africa instead of a formal college education, would you? I dunno if I'd pass on college, I'm excited about it. But I'd kill to spend time in Africa just learning on my own. Of course, I'd make sure I'd had all my shots first...but I really envy Danny for having that experience.

okay so I've been reading the Boingo History book! And It's good! And Danny Talks about the Africa trip:
"I had my nineteenth birthday crossing the border into Nigeria...The border guards all sang me 'Happy Birthday'..."
Then he talks about pretendingto be a missionary and learningto play hymns in order to get good food
"I learned how to keep myself alive when I came down with malaria , which was not to go a hospital, but to find a Peace Corps person's house and knock on their door. When they opened it, I'd collapse and say 'American', They'd have no choice but to let me in and have a cot in their backyard."
XDD;;; I can scan the page if anyone wants to read the rest, but that's about half of it
The original sorce was "Video Entertainment Magazine"
but man! Africa and survival! Danny Elfman is so much of a hero it's insane!
