"I'll call them when I get back. I don't have their numbers with me." She said as they pulled out of the car park.
Driving back down towards Aquila Jess looked at Kayne and then glanced back at the road.
"Kayne, what if they find her and she isn't ready to come back yet?"

At first Kayne let out a soft laugh of disbelief, then turned to look out the window. What if Jess was right? Sighing heavily, he turned back to face her and reached for her hand. This was really hard for him to say.
"I guess... if she doesn't want... to come back... then maybe.... it would be better for her to stay where she is. But you swear to me that these friends of yours will take good care of her?" he asked her.

Jess squeezed his hand and smiled. If Cirrus had made it to Tokyo Mina would look after her like a sister. Drag her to all of the tourist spots take her to see some shows. If she had gone further afield, Kyoto, Kobe, Osaka then Shuhei would get her.
Despite their like/hate relationship Jess knew Shuhei wouldn't hurt Cirrus or put her in danger. However what he might tempt her into was more the problem. He wasn't known for his good behaviour.
"Yes, they'll take good care of her. I promise." She said looking at him briefly before turning her eyes back to the road.

Kayne was mildly reassured. Not that he didn't trust Jess, because he did. But more because it wasn't him who would be watching over her. Again the feeling of helplessness washed over him and he squeezed Jess's hand.
"I need a bloody cigarette," he muttered. "That girl... is going to put me in an early grave," he sighed, leaning his free arm on the door and resting his head in his hand.
He looked back over at Jess, and again was so thankful that he had someone like her to be with him during this ordeal. Slowly, he raised her hand up to kiss it lightly. "Thank you Jess. Thank you for loving me," he said softly.

Jess smiled back at him though his words worried her. She wasn't sure why but they made her incredibly nervous. If this backfired it would be her fault, it was partially her fault that Cirrus had run off in the first place. Maybe she was worried that one morning he would wake up and blame her, hate her for the loss of his sister.
"There's a packet in the dashboard." She said turning a corner. "You can keep it."

Kayne let her hand go and leaned forward to open the dashboard and immediately found the cigarettes. He shook one out as he closed the dash with his knee and found a lighter in one of the cupholders. He quickly lit up as he rolled down the window, then looked over at her.
"Would you like one?" he asked, taking the one from his lips and offering it to her. "Do you think... that maybe I could come back to the club? My restriction is almost through anyways. I just... think I might need something to keep my mind occupied, you know?" he asked softly.

Jess shook her head and continued to drive.
"Sure you can come back." She said changing gear. "I think you'll need the distraction and the friends." Again she smiled and reached down to turn the radio on. "I'll have a word with Yusuke to make it official, but I don't have a problem with it of course."
She turned to look at him briefly again.
"Are you all right?" She asked. "You sound better than earlier."

Was he alright. He had a feeling that would be the question of the day for a while, quite possibly until his sister was back by his side. He took a long drag on the cigarette, and immediately began to relax. He let out a heavy sigh as he exhaled the smoke, then looked over at her.
"I... just don't know what to do with myself right now. All I know is... if I keep thinking about this... I'll go insane. I feel like... a huge part of me is missing. I guess if I just ignore that it's gone... I'll be alright," he said softly.

Jess stared out at the road and wondered what it must be like to feel like a whole part of your life had gone. Hiro had said he felt the same when his father died, but that was more regret for things he had and hadn't said.
"Just keep busy." She said rather lamely. "Hang out with friends, do archery, play soccer. I know it's impossible but try not to think about it."
She really was way out of her depth here.

Kayne smirked lightly as he took another drag on his cigarette. Her words were exactly something he would expect to hear from an adult... a teacher even. But he knew she was doing her best to help him, and that was all that really mattered to him. She could have been speaking Portugeuse for all he cared, and he would still just be happy that she was with him right now. Exhaling more smoke, he looked back out the window.
"You will tell me as soon as you find out anything about her, right? You won't try to hide it from me? I promise.... I will do my best to do what's best for her," he said, taking another drag.

Jess nodded as they drew closer to the academy.
"I'll let you know the minute I know what's going on." She said wondering if he would be so obliging to her if she couldn't do a thing for him. "If you need anything you can call me." She said a bit hesitant. "Don't come to my apartment without calling me first." The last thing she needed was for him in one of his distraught moods to be knocking at her door.

Kayne nodded at her instructions and offer, a slight bit of panic starting to sink in the closer they got to the academy. He squeezed her hand tightly and forced himself to let her go. Maybe they should have stayed longer at the hotel, he started to think. He had not grown up seventeen years with his sister to not know that she was not on that campus. He knew that he had been stupidly fooling himself that she would be. He just felt emptiness when he thought about her. Sighing he extinguished the cigarette in her ashtray. He leaned over and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek.
"I love you Jess. Thank you," he said as he sat back in his seat.

Jess nodded as they drove back onto campus.
"Love you too." She said placing her hand on his knee and squeezing it lightly. Pulling up to the dorms she removed her hand and smiled at him. She wanted to kiss him and make is all seem better but her chance for that had passed.
"Remember, call me anytime." She said unfastening her seatbelt. "Don't sit and dwell on it."

Kayne nodded and managed a semblence of his usual grin.
"Be prepared... my first call might be in a few moments," he said, trying a hand at acting normal. He got out of the car and pocketed the cigarettes. He closed the door and looked over at the looming dorms. In there was an empty room with name on it. Taking a deep breath he flashed Jess a smile. He could do this. There was nothing to it. He was not alone, he kept telling himself.
"Thank you Jess. For everything. I'll be at practice later today," he said, then slowly started to walk off towards the dorms.

Jess smiled and took her phone out of her sleeve.
"I'll be waiting she said quietly." She watched him with concern as he walked off.
"You had better be at practice later Shaidey." She said with a smile. "Else I'm sending Kusani in to guilt you out."Fade to Coral
