I thought this one up while playing PSO with the Soul Eater, it's special attack d20 style.
Soul Syphoning (or Eating, whichever): This weapon has the special ability to call upon the user's physical health in order to strike the opponent fiercely. The user may volunteerly give up 25% of their current health in order to execute an automatic hit on the opponent. The damage with Str bonus is upped slightly, 2x for a two-handed weapon (instead of 1 1/2 Str) and 1 1/2 Str for one-handed weapon (instead of 1x Str). If this ability is used and the user is below 1/2 maximum HP, they must attempt a DC 20 Fortitude Save to remain as they are. Those that fail go into a special rage called a Soul Rage. If they succeed the Fortitude Save, they must repeat it everytime the ability is used while below 1/2 maximum HP.
Soul Rage: Those people under the influence of a Soul Rage are blinded by the fact they've used so much of their life force to fuel their Soul weapon. The person under a soul rage will stand still during the 1st round of affiction, doing nothing but gathering their energy. They are considered Flat-footed in all purposes, but not helpless (they have no desire to avoid blows, all piercing weapons that hit the person stick into them and cannot be wrenched out). After the first round, they start to glow with a pitch black aura. In this position, they are under the effects of a 'Haste' spell, except they attack any and all things around them and anyone that has attacked them in the previous rounds and are allowed to move to do so, making as many attacks as there are targets as the character appears to move faster then a blinding light. After the second round, if the person under soul rage isn't unconcious, the dark aura starts rippling and explodes, dealing 12d8 damage to everyone within a 100 ft radius from the person and the person falls unconcious and dying (at -6 hp). The Soul Rage cannot be stopped unless someone of a very high caster level attempts a remove curse (CL 15th or higher) in which they do a caster level check (DC 35) to determine success. Once the explosion happens, the soul rage has ended. If the person recovers from the dying status, he is exhausted for 24 hours afterwards and doesn't heal naturally until then.

complicated, but otherwise its nice, mayhaps a +5 ability though all the text made me think artifact it doesnt quite hold that much power.
Seems only usefull for about three strikes afterwhich it would be to likely to soul rage and end up dying >_>

Before I had it heal the user 1d4 for every strike and after every round the user would lose 1 HP automaticly, but this is simplified xD

Mine
Soul Storing
If you are killed when in contact you soul may merge with the weapon to form a sentient artifact. power gained depends on bonus of magic item and level.
total bonus and level (balenced for non epic lvl campains, these are only guidlines though) under 7- petty (no powers gained aside from communication) 8-13 - minor (add powers equal to minor artifact, DM has choice of powers gained) 14-18- medium (add powers between those of minor and major artifacts, again DMs choice) 19-25- major (you know the drill)

-idea-
soul gem
The diamond in your hand pulses with an eary light, and you could swear you could hear it talking to you
A soul gem is a artifact of a long forgotten civilization making most things out of raw earth which was mostly destroyed in a great flood before documented history and due to that not many remember or even know of it. A soul is stuck inside each gem. It takes a dc 41 Knowledge (history) check to learn what it is. The gem radiates a strong magical aura, though is not easily identifiable as to what school The gem may inserted into weapon with a slot for a gem to be stuck in there, may be forged into a weapon, inserted into a nich in a iron golem, etc, etc.If inserted the weapon becomes an intelligent weapon of randomly and predetermined abilities. If a ability of the gem is not appliable to the weapon in which it is inserted, it turns the ability temporarily into a item worth equal enhance bonus/2, if inserted into a golem, it takes control over the golem. If the owner of the golem is not willing, a contest of wills taking place, the winner gaining or retaining control. All intellects inside a gem may talk whether in a weapon, or a golem, or not in a item or golem, some others may have different modes of conversing with people. When touched, if inhabited, a gem will attempt to converse with the character touching it, and will cycle through all available modes of conversing with the character. If it has a soul from the civilization that made these artifacts, a DC 50 knowledge check may allow a character to partially translate the speach temperarily if no other way of figuring out the language.
resault 50-55 catching a few words but otherwise not understanding the creature 56-60 Partially understanding the basic sentences 61-65 Understanding basic sentences, plus some complex sentences 66-70 Completely understanding the language
