What do you think about the media setting certain beauty standards? Before you answer, here is my rant.

My little sister was recently running laps around the house, because she is convinced she is fat..... She isn't, but she's been brainwashed by the TV to think that she's fat, and that boys won't like here. So she runs laps around the house, stepping on the cat once.... She's like a step or two away from Anorexia, and while we try to hold video game companies accountable for school violence, holding Disney Channel Accountable for force feeding impossible beauty standards (and, may I say, horrible stereotypes of both sexes).

Of course, the flip side of that is the obesity problem in America, and the general consenses thanks to our beauty standards is that overweight and obese people are necessarily unhealthy, which has been proven untrue. I'm a health freak, I always have been. So, I have read up on that (If you are healthy and overweight, you live longer).

So our standards of health are somehow shaped by that of beauty, which is totally ludicrous.

Now, I don't want more fat people on TV, or less fat jokes. Oh, hell no, fat jokes are funny (well, most suck. But come on, Shallow Hal was a damn good movie).I rather see people who look realistic and are on TV more because of overall talent then appearance.

Because, Lord knows, most of the people on TV have "beauty" over Talent.

Well, there's my rant.....

I can understand where your sister's mind is. I have a little streak with bulima every now and then becuase I see some cute chick who's a size 4 walking by(Me? Excercise? Bish please).

As to the media, I'm not sure what to do with it exactly. Its getting better, but its getting worse. Sure, the awareness of fat/average people as being healthy is rising, but so is the desire to be of an above avergae thinness.

I definitly see where you're comming from. All these celebrity shows and such showing these skinny models and things. One show i liked on MTV was "Real Life- I'm fat" (i belive). There was this one chick that accepted the fact that she's bigger than the "average" ladies, and wanted to model for plus size clothings, and she tried very hard to do so. To me she's trying to change society's outlook on what beautiful really is, as well as talent, and that is something worth praising *claps hands* 3nodding

I don't think we should fill the media with obese people, but I don't want anymore anorexic models that cause unattainable weight ideals for young girls. Eating disorders in the west are a huge problem in this day and age and it is all the media's fault.
Young girls are pressured by essentially every media they are interested in: T.V. - Every channel a young girl would have an interest in has girls who have a usually beautiful and 'perfect' looking heroine.
In the magazine you can see almost every bone in the the pictures that the girls will pay the most attention too.
It's horrible. All I want is a healthy balance of the curvy (as average people understand the word- not hollywood curvy where you have a tiny waist and a b cup) and average and then extremely thin actresses.

Well, I don't want the media to completely change. I rather see REALISTIC looking people, as opposed to fake looking people. People come in all shapes and sizes, except for plastic. That's what I don't want on TV.

I do think the media focuses too much on being skinny...

But I also blame parents. Children are impressionable, but parents should ultimately be the ones teaching they're child they're worth something. Maybe I'm dissillusioned, though, from my job. It's easier not to parent anymore, and let other people do the work. Instead of teaching children sharing, parents waste countless extra on food at movies because they don't want to deal with their kids fighting over it, or they just spoil their child. But I won't even go into my rant sweatdrop Parents should be the ones teaching their kids healthy lifestyles and how to be a well-rounded human being. I don't mind videogames, but instead of sticking your kid in front of a TV all the time, go bike rideing with the kid or take a nature walk. Teach them that excersize can be fun. And if they're still a little heavy after that, or even if they aren't, it should be the parents job to let they're kid know they are special and wonderful the way they are.

I'd like to see a variety of people on the telivision, but I'd really rather see parents take back their children.

I agree that the media should be more balanced in its portrayal of different sizes in people. I remember the show Average Joe that was on a few years back, and I thought it was a great idea for a show, even though much of it was mocking the people who were different. But I wish they had done an Average Jane or whatever. I've noticed that overweight women are all but absent on television. Except for Life with Bonnie (or whatever that show was), I've not seen any women who are anything but thin on television. Maybe I'm just watching the wrong shows. But it seems as if all women are thin. We've started breaking into the shows like Average Joe and Beauty and the Geek that portray real guys, but I have yet to see ones that portray real women. Where are the shows about girls/women who aren't perfect? Who are geek, who are not society's perfect body-image, who aren't the norm? Why are women always the vapid beauties on these shows, never the normal, every-day participants? Stupid societal impressions of beauty. Why couldn't Rembrandt nd Botticelli be here today? crying

Everyone has already touched on various points of concerns with what is wrong with standards. Most media, (over 95%) can be attributed to the myraid of problems that overweight people face. They are constantly being attack, and even then I put them in a seperate category and I dont mean any disrespect. I think that most of the sicknesses that go hand in hand with weightloss have been brought on by societies standards of beauty. And as much as we want it to change, I personally don't see it changing any time soon although in recent years the surge in overweight people taking a stand for their rights to be appreciated more is becoming more evident.

Hell, one of my closest friends used to have a "problem" with her weight. She had always been the bigger girl since she was really little and in highschool her highest weight was aroun 350lbs and she was constantly trying to lose weight but would gain it back faster then she lost it. She was never comfortable with herself, she hated the way she looked because she believed that it was her weight that was doing it to her. And then we met and it took sometime but I finally got her to see the beauty she really possessed. She finally broke free of the shackles that society put on her and she was allowed to go out and eat what she wanted. Of course, since then shes gained a considerable amount of weight but shes happy and her last check up at the doctor shows that shes in perfect health even despite her rather impressive weight. Life is too short to care what otherpeople think of you. If you arent happy, then whats the point of getting up and doing it all over again anyways? Life is about finding happiness through whatever means that make you smile and brighten your day. So if you love eating, then hell, eat all you want. If you weigh 3, 4, 5, or even 600 pounds why should it matter what society says as long as you are doing good for yourself, are happy with your life, and are healthy? Again, life is to short to worry. Live happy, live life.

I'd totally be interested in starting the cranky fatass revolution. An interesting casting choice for a movie I am making is a friend of mine (no, I don't just cast friends. This is a serious movie, however, she fit the part) as a woman who owns a modelling agency where several young women are recruited for a movie. The woman I have running the place is a very large woman. One who is also very healthy. One thing to put in all my movies: Fat people and homosexuals. Why? I want to put in people who are usually only represented as stereotypes for the sake of a cheap laugh.

And, see, I'm attracted to that. Not somebody of that weight, I've openly stated I'm not an FA. I'm attracted to somebody who can say "I simply don't care. I am going to be who I am and be happy."

Everyone is more concerned with being attractive then being happy. I find a real problem with that in society.

I agree with you for the most part, Actually for my graduation essay I wrote to paris hilton telling her not to be such a bad example to americas youth. etc. The administrators thought me writing to paris hilton was funny, but I got a really good grade on it. gonk

I'm so sorry. How old is your sister? I'll assume preteen? Honestly it's just getting worse and worse.. Nobody that young should start to develop a problem with food that young, as someone who has experienced it, an eating disorder and weight complex is not a good experience to go through. It really messes with your confidence and a lot of other psycological aspects of your life.. I second the notion to have a wide variety of regular-looking people in the media, not just lil bitty stick persons. They're not realistic.
