that "stilling the mind" part.... It's kind of like trying to fly -- I understand it in theory but really don't know where to start.
The ideas come up and I try to just let them pass but it's sort of like trying to let a stampeding herd of wildebeest pass.
I suppose with practice I can not be swept away..... (someone encourage me pleeeeeeeeeeease!)
Sit and count your breaths. Focus on that. Let the mind do what it wants.
You'll never stop it from thinking, but you can stop yourself from getting caught up in the thoughts.
Just inhale.... 1... exhale.... inhale.... 2.... exhale... and go to 10. If you waver, bring it back to 1. Just keep doing that, and your mind will still itself.
The more you try to get your mind to shut up, the more it goes. Trust me, from personal experience, it just goes and goes and goes. Don't ignore it, notice the thoughts, let them come, and let them go. Don't think about anything in particular, just sit.
Just sit.
