Since I will be attending junior year of high school in Japan, I was wondering what city would be best to go to. I think it will probably be up to my exchange program, but I was originally wanting to go to Tokyo. But I've heard it's really expensive, and though that isn't really an issue with me, I've also heard people saying it's not a great place to go if you're new to the language and whatnot.

Most exchange programs don`t let you choose a city. They just put you in an area where they have an open family, be it in the country side or the city. They might have you list a preferance area but there is obviously no gaurentee that you will be anywhere near you first choice

Exactly.

But if you have a choice... don't choose Tokyo. Sure, it's the "cool" place to be, but if you want to see "real" Japan... eheh...

If you want a big city, I'd recommend Kyoto. It's a fairly big city, but it has a lot of traditional stuff too. And there will be less foreigners in Kyoto, so you will be forced to learn Japanese. Unlike Tokyo, where you could probably do pretty well for yourself with just English.

But you probably won't get a choice anyway. In the end, I hope you're happy with where you end up, and I hope you keep us posted about your school life in Japan. whee

(P.S. If you end up anywhere near Tokushima, let me know. I'll be here until mid-2007, at least.)

Hanako Tanaka teaches me. i take her classes online because i cannot go to Japan yet. Soon i will and i would like to go to Tokyo and/or kyoto

Lucky. I want to go to Japan. I'd like to visit Tokyo or Kyoto. Judging by others are saying, if you do get a choice, go to Kyoto. I'm hopfully going to Okinawa in 2008 or 09.
