So my next avatar commission can suck less and I can charge more than ten damn thousand gold. How do I make these more exciting? How can I color in black and white and have it look not like s**t?  Sig size: gonk

Tawney Some more shading might sweeten the deal. That's what I mean XD I had cel shaded the entire thing in black and white, but it looked so shitty I erased all of it. :[

When I imagine going back to CG, I usually conjure up images that remind me of street fighter alpha.
Lemme explain.
I think if I did cel-style i'd throw in odd backgrounds and apply a lot of photographic effects to make it seem like two characters were having a dialogue or one in the midst of soliloquoy.
I like throwing in thought bubbles cuz i'm gay, as far as spicing it up a bit, i'd say that you can't really go wrong with weird poses and stoicism.

take the lazyman's route
add some ps pattern effects to the entire image on overlay, lightly color the bkg and call it a day

I'd suggest using other colors to shade it. Maybe work in some complementary colors or something instead of the black and white.
