Shard stepped up to the door of the mansion, placed his hand on the doorknob... then slowly pulled it away. Erae had been far less than pleased when he had stepped in without warning before.
Raising his fist, he knocked three times. He had need of Kanth, and even if the party was still going, and he didn't want to have to argue with Erae to get to her.
Arden watched quietly, nestled in the crook of Shard's arm, still inanimate.

"Excuse me." Bowing her head to LP, Kanth walked into the living room, disappearing from LP's sight.
Opening the door, Kanth stood there, her eyes narrowing, though her expression stoic.
"Shard... what a pleasant surprise."

"Kanth, come out for a moment. I need to ask you for a favor." There was a twist to his words... he was both sincere and uncomfortable doing it. Once they were far enough that the noise from the party had faded a bit, he continued.
"I've taken on an important bounty... But, the more I learn about it, the more I think that my abilities won't be enough to handle it alone. You, on the other hand, have strengths that would make you uniquely suited to it. I can't tell you much. Let's just say that the bounty and you have something in common, and I can't match it."
"I need your help on this one." He hated saying that. "I'll... split the bounty with you."

Stopping her walk, she turned her head and stared at him. What was he playing at?
"Why are you coming to me now?" She muttered darkly, her fingertips curving just slightly. "Is it because you want to use me again, like you did before, or is it different this time? No, wait, don't tell me. You haven't changed a bit, man behind the mask." Throwing her hand up, she stalked off.

Shard blurred, then snapped into focus in front of her. "Kanth, I don't have time..."
"I came to you because I need your help. It's as simple as that. And I came to you now, because I can't afford to wait. I don't have any idea what face my bounty will be wearing in a week, or even tomorrow... but today, I know who he is, and where."
"I'm not here to use you, Kanth." Shard muttered. "I'm done with those kinds of mistakes. You're right, though. I probably haven't changed much. But I still need your help."

Figuratively speaking, Kanth was a bit miffed. Turning to him with narrow eyes, she reached up to her neck, her fingers closing in on... nothing.
She had forgotten that her scarf was gone... completely gone. And she was never going to get it back.
It was then that she realized that she had gotten the gift for him. And he didn't even care... or did he? Idly, her gaze trailed down from him, to the plush he was holding.
Kanth burst out laughing. He had a pink moogle. It was cute - Shard didn't do cute.

Shard colored, but again, it was thankfully hidden by his mask. He reached down and plucked the Moogle out of the crook of his arm, and held it out for her to see.
"This is Arden," he said, quietly, "And he is mine. You can see him, if you want. I brought him because he didn't get to meet you before. And, because I've been taking him hunting with me."
Shard looked over the moogle. It was pink, and plump, with dark wings and a red bob. It *was* cute, almost to the point of embarassing. But somehow, he found himself fiercely protective of the little animal. Odd.

Taking him, she smiled. "He's so cuuuute." Flapping his wings, she gave him a quick hug before giving him back to Shard. "Arden... pretty name." Frowning slightly, she looked up at the stars, going back to the previous conversation.
"What's in it for me... besides the money? And why do you need my help so badly?" Kanth eyed Shard again, though her look was softer.

*LP nods softly as kanth dissapers and she looks around and slinks towards the door hopefully unnoticed to slip off into the night.... no sooner was she out of the door she sighed* magic, what's the use of magic when your no longer demon. *she walks off hands shoved into pockets*

Shard plucked Arden out of Kanth's hand, and held him in front of him. "Cute, huh? Arden, you hear that? You're cute."
Shard's voice was tinged with wry amusement amusement as he tucked Arden back under his arm. But, when he turned back to Kanth, it had returned to its former, business like tone.
"Well, for one, you'll have my gratitude..." Kanth's expression soured. Think of something... "As well as rights to anything that's 'confiscated'... There's a rather famous magical staff in his possession, that I don't think it'd be wise to leave him with."
"As for why I need your help? Well, as I said before, you and he have something in common." Shard considered what he'd say next for a long moment.
"Kanth, he's a shapeshifter."
Quietly, he waited for her reaction.

Erae stayed in bed for a long time, but found that he couldn't get to sleep. Sitting up, he got off the bed and tiptoed out of the room, making sure that Anastasia stayed asleep.
Walking downstairs, he made his way out the door, where he felt Kanth was. The shadows hid him, and he snuck up on their conversation, feeling very sly.
But mostly wanting to know what Kanth was doing outside, this late... was she looking at the stars?
Kanth crossed her arms and huffed. "Take care of him yourself, if you think you're so good with shapeshifters..." She thought for a moment, then finally sighed in defeat, shaking her head.
"Include the staff with two-thirds of the bounty, and I'm in. If this is going where I think it is, I'll be doing most of the work. You can't track him, can you?" A sly smirk appeared on her face, like that of a cheshire cat.
"And I'm bringing Erae, too."

Shard shrugged. "Erae can come if he wants. He's got some abilities that are pretty useful." He paused. "He makes a good security guard. At least, when there's shadows around. He'll be helpful, as long as he can take our working closely."
"I can't track our shapechanger, exactly. Every time I hunt him down, he changes form, and I have to start again, fresh. The staff, however, is something of his signature item. I can track *it*, and I don't think he's going to lose it anytime soon. I've found him, but once he knows that... We don't have a lot of time, and I need your help."
Shard raised his hand, holding his palm flat. Flame sprang to life within it, then dimmed slightly and flickered unsteadily. "I've spent a lot of my strength on tracking him... and on a few other pursuits. What I'm left with might not be enough. Since I still haven't figured out your weakness... I've got nothing to go on for his. And if we're nearly even, when I'm at full..."
"He's going to be more than I can handle. I'll let you keep the staff, and if it proves that you have to track him yourself, 2/3 of the money. But if we can get him before he shifts again... It's a half. Either way, though, we need to move quickly."

RP in AIM. This is the rest of what happened before Kanth's 'disappearance'. Ugh, so hard to get plotlines to work :p
The 'Interrogation' "You expect me to leave now?" Kanth gritted her teeth, crossing her arms. Her eyes glanced over to Erae, and then wandered back to the mansion, slowly. He hadn't detected her look - that was good. It meant that he was a total idiot when it came to shapeshifters and their habits. Especially her.Shard's hand seized her shoulder, stopping her. "Kanth, I need your help. Please." "You expect me to leave my guests? Now? I can't do that. We have six days left." Kanth shrugged his hand off and started walking back towards the mansion, knowing Erae would catch up without being detected. He was very good at that.He sighed. I'm not getting through to her. Why is she so adamantly refusing... No, no, it couldn't be. "Kanth... Are you afraid of him?" She turned, eyes glaring. "Afraid? AFRAID?" She gritted her teeth. "What in hell's name makes you think I would be afraid?!" She bit her tongue, remembering not to swear around Erae. Too late for that, now. "I don't want to leave my guests behind. I invited them, posted a sign up at the shop, and then you come out of the blue, expecting me to just drop everything and follow you. No, I don't think so.""I've never heard you talk about shapeshifters before... and the rewards are good, but the time is short. Why're you going to wait, and let all of it slip past?" "Your guests will live if you disappear for a while. I'm not saying you have to end the party, but it might be worth it... You can always have another party, but this bounty will only come by once." "It doesn't fit, Kanth. I don't buy it. There's gotta be some other reason, one that I don't know about. If you're not a coward, then WHY?" "Erae, let's go." Kanth murmured, gritting her teeth. Erae came out of the shadows and let her pick him up, setting him on her shoulder.
"I'll meet you at Gambino's mansion. Don't be late." She looked at Erae and smiled, touching his nose gently before walking off towards the mansion."I'll be there..." Shard murmered, just loud enough that it would carry. "Prepare yourself. This won't be easy." His hands moved in an arcane gesture, and for an instant, his power surged. Shard's form shivered and dissolved into shadow, and he was gone.

Sighing irritably and rubbing her forehead with her fist, Kanth opened the door and closed it behind her, leaning against the wall.
"Are you alright?" Erae asked, putting his cheek against hers gently.
"I'll be fine. I just... hate being called a damn coward." Walking over to the table, she got out her notepad and wrote a note to her guests, ignoring the sudden guilt that she felt.
I'm sorry for the early departure, but something recently came up that I must help a friend with.
Kanth paused, gritting her teeth. 'Friend' indeed. Moron. She used the term loosely, and shrugged it off, continuing with the note. Over her shoulder, Erae watched with his warm, red eyes.
Feel free to stay in the house as long as you wish, and help yourself to anything. I won't be gone long, and don't worry about overstaying.
Finishing with the note, Kanth grabbed a thumbtack out of one of the nearby drawers and walked over to the door, holding the note up and tacking it to the middle - where everyone would see. Giving a last glance around her house, the shapeshifter sighed, shaking her head as she left out the door, shutting it quietly. Hopefully, everything would be alright when she got back.
[I declare this thread ... ended. =x Unless you peeps would like to finish with your characters. ^^; I imagined this to be before the zombeez at teh Gambino mansion, which would explain Kanth's absence, which equals why I wouldn't be around in November. Well, ICly, anyway.]
