Yes, but thats the O B V I O U S sense!!
As stated, I am WELL aware of that. WELL aware.... you know, being the Asuka fangirl and all.
Look deeper. Seriously, I wrote it all out. I said "Sub-consciously". (sub con scious adj. Not wholly conscious; partially or imperfectly conscious: subconscious perceptions.
n. The part of the mind below the level of conscious perception. Often used with the.
con scious adj.
1.
a) Having an awareness of one's environment and one's own existence, sensations, and thoughts. See Synonyms at aware. b) Mentally perceptive or alert; awake: The patient remained fully conscious after the local anesthetic was administered. 2. Capable of thought, will, or perception: the development of conscious life on the planet. 3. Subjectively known or felt: conscious remorse. 4. Intentionally conceived or done; deliberate: a conscious insult; made a conscious effort to speak more clearly. 5. Inwardly attentive or sensible; mindful: was increasingly conscious of being watched. 5. Especially aware of or preoccupied with. Often used in combination: a cost-conscious approach to further development; a health-conscious diet. )
I HIGHLY doubt that she would have made that association consciously. Remember, my dear Asuka is very judgemental, and very defensive against anything that seems like a threat. She wont GIVE those things a second thought. All that matters, is making sure she comes out alright.
YES Asuka THOUGHT that Ayanami was the doll blah blah we know that. But the doll meant that ASUKA was meaningless. That SHE was 'replaceable'. That doll was Asuka, in Kyoko's eyes. And in Asuka's eyes the doll was Rei. So you can even go as far as suggesting that Asuka is Rei in a sense. And if Asuka hates the doll she hates herself. So, in the end, she STILL doesnt hate Rei. (Which, if you have any sort of perception, is what I'm trying to prove here.) It's just a huge chain of derranged associations brought on by the mass paranoia and betrayal of a broken hearted/minded/spirited little girl.
And I'm not saying that the mother MUST be Rei. It doesnt HAVE to be Rei. I stated that clearly, I think.
Ayanami is just the one that ignores her the most effectively. Think of all the times Asuka was trying to get her attention, or just some crazed reaction from her. Wondergirl did nothing. Just like Asuka's mother ignored her attempts, and even her presence.
And I figured that I would just USE the Ayanami situation, since she's part Lilith and the 'mother of humanity'. Therefore she already has this built in Maternal 'aura' of sorts even if she doesnt know jack s**t about it, herself, or being ******** human, for that matter.

I was just stating my opinion Lang. And I respect yours as well. Maybe you're right. Perhaps I shopuld try to look deeper into why Asuka does the things that she does.

I'm aware that you were stating your opinion. However, the manner in which you do so, tends to imply things about my own opinion. (in a degrading way). And it is just me, because most of your posts start off with the "Langley is gonna kill me, haha ms lang" thing. whee

Well, don't forget that Asuka's mother went a little on the crazy side and nursed a doll like it was her real daughter.

Alright...from this i'll accept that Rei is probably the "mother of humanity" in a sense....however she still seems like such a souless shell...its very difficult to imagine she really wants to take care of anyone except for shinji.....which makes her Asuka's mother figure in only asuka's sense....in the end its all asuka's problem....and i'll get pissed off thinking about it so im not going to XP
yeah i know im lazy....so shoot me....

wow... that's a really great theory (just got around to checking this) Sir Langley. I can see how much it makes sense... lol I think I agree with that, because it really did seem like Ayanami was trying to help Asuka in the elevator scene.
But I won't go into my view on that since I'll just end up repeating stuff. But referring to just Asuka's character... I used to not really care for her character, I didn't hate her but I didn't like her either... I thought her character was shallow (in two different senses) but that was mostly because I was focussed on Rei because I could relate to her the most.
After watching the series over numerous times and seeing EOE I found myself focussing on Asuka and seeing more of her personality and what a deep character she really was despite my first perception. She has so many mental issues going on and it's amazing that she can even function let alone pilot an Eva and carry on fairly normal interactions with ppl ("fairly normal" being she doesn't not talk to ppl or ... I dunno, rip ppl's heads off for no reason) and I came to admire her determination.
In conclusion, I have reconsidered my first view of Asuka and she has now become one of my more favoured characters. I find I can also relate to certain issues she has (though not the mother hating thing...). That's all I got smile
