While watching a few bands on Saturday, A thought came to mind. Perhaps I should learn how to build the perfect bass guitar.
I want to study industrial design, next year so its not that far off I guess. I mean as soon as I though of the idea like 3 ideas came to mind.
So I think today, I shall start at looking into what makes a good bass guitar and such. May start with customising basses.

What would make a fuggen awsome bass, component wise?
And then, is it possible to take a cheap crap bass and make it awsome, with awsome components(considering the neck is not warped and what what.)?
What cheap bass guitars have potential?

Well... If you were going to soup up a cheap-o bass, then I'd -at least- replace the neck with a wood of higher quality and perhaps give it a nicer finish as well. But the only kind of crap bass I think would have potential are either Squires (Replace pups, neck, new paint and finish) or any of the Bronze Series from Warlock (Replace EVERYTHING).

Right, replace the neck with higher quality wood along with the fretboard, and if it is a fretted bass, go for bell brass frets. They give the bass a warmer brighter sound. Next, improve pickups. Find the best pickups to fit into whatever bass you pick. (I would say a squire or yamaha seeing as how they are cheap) And make sure all the wiring to your pots are in great condition. After that, just make sure it is comfortable and balanced properly.

I custom made my own bass out of sheer boredom. I've got a workshop at my house and I had some holiday lerft from work, so I had two a few weeks to muck around. I made a double necked bass. Both necks are long necks as I prefer the tone long necked basses give. The body is based on my http://www.warwickbass.com/basses/vampyresn.html and the heads are based on my http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/565656/Guitar.jpg, but they are obviously much thicker to allow for bass strings. I've used an active MEC Twin Jazz pickup, active MEC Jazz neck pickup and 2-band, active MEC electronics to make sure that this thing roars like a demon. The top neck is a four string and I use really thick strings on this so my metal has a brand new a**-kicking quality to it! The lower neck is a five string that I use lighter strings on as it lets me play funk, jazz and blues with a lot more ease. It weighs a bloody tonne but when I get on stage with it, the crowd gets very excited. She's my baby, and she's the only double necked bass I know of. She took me ages to build but I was soooo pleased with her!

Honestly, modding a cheap bass is just a quick fix, and for the price of modding one up to great bass standards you can just buy a new one. If you want to make a your own bass, I would try to learn from master luthiers and look at their work for ideas. I recommend Carl Thompson, Alembic, Sadowsky, Ken Smith, Fodera, Zon, Pedulla, Wal, and Lakland.

Thats cool, i get all of my money from making different instruments for people!! I have made a couple basses!! one from my own design range and one which was a cross between a telecaster, B.C. Rich, a flying V, and a stratocaster!! which was pretty cool!! I have also modified alot of peoples basses putting in FX pots, scalping, making them baritone and i even pitted a complete digital multi-fx within a Fender Strat P-Bass.

Anyways, to the point its alot of fun making instruments, and its a thing that i am hoping to do when im older (im even taking a course on it in uni!! lol). SO have fun with making your bass!!

Hopefully the use of "was" doesn't imply that something happened to her?

No. My Angel Of Death is nicely tucked up in my room with my other guitars. When my cousin comes round to convince me to do a gig for him, he knows he's not allowed to touch her, so he goes and fiddles with my BC Rich. I'm looking at making another custom, but I can't find any bodies that I want to modify and I cant' be arsed to custom make a whole body.
